Guest reshad974 Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 - A source inside the cable industry claims that WWE used fuzzy math to come up with the 900,000 buys number for WrestleMania XX. He claims that the company took the actual number of buys, multiplied it by $49.95, then divided it by the budgeted price of $44.95. This allowed them to garner lots of positive press through the mainstream media, most of which don't understand PPV enough or care enough to look into the details. - Meanwhile, WWE Backlash looks to have done 600,000 buys. That number is well above the 500,000 buys the company had budgeted. Despite that, some in the company are disappointed in the number as they were hoping for the WrestleMania XX momentum to cause another huge buyrate. Credit: Torch Newsletter
Karc Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 "Fuzzy math." It's blatant data manipulation. WWE should be relieved that Mick Foley killing himself and Orton and Benoit fighting in Canada got the buyrate as high as it did. Let's see how many people watch Bad Blood without that.
Mecha Mummy Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 600,000 sounds fine for a show that was built mostly around rematches other than Foley/Orton.
Detox Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 alot more people were interested in backlash than i thought now it is yet to be seen how many people are going to shell out money for judgement day with a JBL/Eddy main event
Guest Mulatto Heat Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Benoit's homecoming outdrew All the Titles on the Line (2001), Hogan's run to the title (2002), and the return of Goldberg (2003). Just sayin'.
AlaskanHero Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 A lot of people must've wanted to see Randy orton get what was coming to him. That or see "The Final Encounter". Or maybe some other thing that happened on Backlash. Unless JBL turns into the next *insert really talented wrestler here*, then Judgement Day is probably gonna bomb. Although, if I had the money and had more than basic cable, I'd watch Judgement Day.
Guest Choken One Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 No question that J.D will bomb baring any HUGE change...like...I dunno...Steve Austin returning and wrestling Hogan...thats about it. Look at the card. Who wants to see it? NO ONE. Not even Eddy's own family Eddy: C'mon honey...order the ppv will ya? Mrs. Guerrero: Nah. I tivoed Clean Sweep this week. Eddy: How about you little Eddy? Eddy Junior: Um...I like Ballet more. Eddy: More then your father? Eddy Junior: No...more then Bradshaw. *eddy junior twirls away* Six months later, Eddy title run was ended, eddy was sent to job to taker, Eddy gets back on the juice and is seen under a bridge in Tulsa, Oklahoma with a sign that says "BRADSHAW RUINED MY LIFE".
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Fuzzy math? Sounds more like fraud to me.

Credit: Torch Newsletter I find this Backlash buyrate story really odd, since according to the Investors site at WWE.com Backlash did between 280,000-300,000 buys, which is a much more reasonable number when compared to all the one brand PPV's
Guest duck420 Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 i would pay money to watch foley ride roller coasters.

Markme123 Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I'm sorry but I don't think that they got 600,000 buys because of "Benoit fighting in Canada" or Benoit's homecoming. The Final Encounter *match* and the Randy/Mick one-on-one match probably did it.
Guest Mulatto Heat Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 When it comes down to it, you don't know any more about what got people to buy than I do. The most memorable attribute of Backlash was that it was Benoit's homecoming, and if I was to say one thing about the PPV, that would be it. So there.
Michrome Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 There's always some excuse to explain away Benoit's success in ratings, might as well do it for buyrates too. Just curious, how do you explain away the fact that Benoit vs. HBK, a few weeks before wrestlemania, beat out a WWE title match between Shawn and HHH the week after Christmas, traditionally one of the strongest periods in US wrestling history.

Maybe if I knew that I could decide better if this buyrate business was either just misleading or a total fraud and outright lying. But also, I wonder how much a source inside the cable industry could know. You think a source from the PPV industry would be leagues more in the realiability department.

Guest reshad974 Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 If anyone here can resolve this equation, we will have the actual number of buys. Let's say X = actual number of buys Y = Total actual PPV revenue 49,95X = Y Y / 44,95 = 900 000

Let's say X = actual number of buys Y = Total actual PPV revenue 49,95X = Y Y / 44,95 = 900 000 I'm incredibly tired so maybe my math isn't sound... But shouldn't we be able to just multiply 44.95 by 900,000 and then divide it by 49.95? If so then the real number would be 809,809. So we could say it's around 810,000.

Jericho2000Mark Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 600 000 buys sounds a little fishy to me, especially since every other brand only PPV has drawn between 200 000-300 000 buys. Unless Foley is still THAT big of a draw. Although the ratings have yet to show otherwise.
Enigma Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 Forget not wanting to buy Judgment Day. I know some people whom are so apathetic to this PPV that they don't even want to go to the local Hooters and watch it as we usually do. Now THAT'S sad.
