Oh get fucked. Jet are horrendous? BULLSHIT. Jet make better music than any other 's' band (Strokes, White Stripes, Vines) could ever make.

I like the way my friend described it when I asked him why The Strokes sucked so much: "Because there needs to be some band to bridge the gap between The White Stripes and the rest of the music world'.

'Cold Hard Bitch' and 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl' are two of the best raw Aussie rock songs written in the past few years. The next AC/DC? Highly Doubtful. Brilliant? Yes, yes they are.

As for The Vines, meh, reasonable, but nothing special. Never liked the whole 'break the instruments' gimmick. It got old very quickly.

Jet have nothing to add to music. I just like to hear stuff i haven't heard before. It wouldn't bother me, but they're actually making money for this. At least make the effort, for christ's sake.

YEEEEEEEHAW~!, 1 down, 3 to go

The White Stripes, Jet, and The Strokes will all be gone in no time hopefully

Can we please stop classing all these groups together? They got big around the same time (with the exception of Jet) and play guitars. Where the hell is the similarity?

I like the White Stripes and a good bit of the Strokes, for the record. There's a certain charm to the well-tuned apathy the latter pull off.

They're all shitty faux-70's rock bands polluting the air waves (even if most radio stations are already shitty themselves) with overly simplistic music while people think they're rock gods or something. There's your similarity.

If I may add:

If I want a good australian rock 'N roll band I'll listen to Ac/Dc, not Jet, if I want a guitar god I'll listen to John Petrucci, not FREAKIN' JACK WHITE.

Jet will be hot for a while, with a few hit singles under their belt. Then, they'll start to be be forgotten about before eventually dropping off the map. That always happens to bands like that.

I don't really buy that. The Vines - the singles off their first album, at least, which is all I've ever heard - aped early 90's grunge-rock and did the start-stop loud-soft thing. The Strokes have a stripped down detached sound that sounds much more new wave than 70's rock to me, especially on their most recent album. The White Stripes are just a duo playing a bunch of weird, sometimes bluesy, sometimes country, sometimes arena rock. Neither "Hotel Yorba" nor "Fell in Love With A Girl" nor "Ball and Biscuit" nor their cover of "Jolene" (which might be the best thing they've ever recorded) nor the vast majority of their catalog sounds like what I'd call 70's rock. Recorded on old equipment, sure. I don't care if the music's simplistic; if you can make good music with a guitar and drums (as I believe the White Stripes often do, especially on White Blood Cells), then I'd rather have you than a rock god.

Jet do ape 70's rock, and quite consciously it seems, and I've been unimpressed with them so far.

Someone said that Jet should be paying AC/DC royalties, more like Iggy Pop, on one of the songs (I don't know the name), the riff is nearly identical to 'Lust For Life'.

Why would anyone want to listen to Jet when theres a huge Stones back catalogue to get through?

I had thought that Jet would be a good modern day version of the Stones or even cream - but nope, they sound more like a 70's Arena rock band. I ain't havin' it.

I think someone who looks to Dream Theater for musical edification has an entirely different outlook on music than people like Edwin or myself.

I never talked about Dream Theater (I don't really like their music, it's all flippy floppy shit over good melodic music), just Petrucci's status as a guitar god, which he is.

Can another Aussie here who listens to Triple M tell me why they've banned playing all Vines music?

Is it some retarded stand against a band no-one gave a shit about in the first place or something?

You people realise that the Vines first met most of each other while working at McDonalds.

Yeah, suddenly they don't seem as bad as they could've.

Because they also like to target the younger audience, as well as pass The Vines off as music that older people can enjoy - "Good Aussie rock".

Triple M is also the motherload for bands like Nickelback.

Because they fucked up one of their Garage Sessions and abused and threw shit at their listeners. They went on to encourage everyone to boycott their planned concert in Sydney that week which was consequently cancelled.

That's fairly amusing that they actually once worked at Maccas. The promo Triple M are running now is saying that if people still like them and want to see them again they'll soon be asking "if they want fries with that".

iB, get over it would you, must every post run down the mainstream music scene with EVERY post??

I would take ten of these guys over one more shitty remix of BAD MUSIC, like "Take My Breath Away," "First Cut Is The Deepest," or the rap re-do of "I'll Be Watching You."

At least these guys are doing somewhat shameful versions of good music, instead of somewhat shameful versions of music that was shameful to begin with.

Since when did music have to be ground-breaking? Music is the same thing as television: mindless entertainment. Not everything has to be deeply politically motivated and exceptional. You guys all act like you're waiting for a new Dylan to come along, to change the face of mainstream music. Unfortunately, there's a vast difference between the current social environment and Dylan-era social environment. Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and realize that music doesn't have to be life-changing to be "good".

It's been said that the best bands play songs that, when reduced to their simplest notes, can still be recognized. You put any Jet song to an acoustic guitar, you'll still fucking recognize it.

They've never claimed to be anything other than a party band. It's background music. Get the fuck over it.

Sorry, I like music is all, and I think blatently watered down derivative music that only gets coverage because it's cool is an insult to people who work for a living. Jet.org should be a non-profit organisation, then they wouldn't bother me quite as much. On second thoughts, they probably would.

I like the Vines

I like Highly Evolved and was probably gonna buy winning days because I really like Ride. It wasn't very groundbreaking and very Beatles like but It sounded good and that's all I really care about.

Jet anoy me somewhat. I liked "are you gonna be my girl?" but for the first month of listening to it thought it was a White Stripes song.

The White stripes shouldn't be grouped with all of the previously mentioned brands, they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

If I want to listen to an Australian Rock band, I'l listen to silverchair. (bring on the hate for that)

ummmm, that's about all I've got to say.

Anyone who really likes mindless entertainment is probably mindless. Why even bother commenting on something that supposedly involves no thought? To take something as broad as "music" and say it's mindless entertainment is probably the stupidest thing you've typed among a plethora of stupid things these past couple days.

Beethoven, The Beatles..mindless entertainment with that statement.

Jet however, is in fact mindless entertainment. And no, people aren't going to recognize a Jet song if some bozo starts plunking it out on their frathouse acoustic. It's too...nothing..to have any sort of personality or even catchiness, let alone something that can be recognized as a hallmark riff.

Jet, and other such "background music" as you call it, is absolute shit and has no reason to exist other than to entertain people who don't care.

and another thing...here's why music should be groundbreaking. Theoretically, we as a species are evolving, right? Why shouldn't our expression reflect this?

Not attempting to do anything new or original doesn't just keep a band from being groundbreaking, it strips them of anything to set them apart. I mean, why listen to Jet when there's been bands that have taken that sound and done it better, not to mention did it first?

Bands that don't even try don't deserve any attention.

Name one "ground-breaking" new artist that's come along recently. I don't see how you can claim that music is anything other than mindless entertainment. I seriously doubt you sit there and digest every single note, every vague reference, every nuance of an album. If a song comes on at a party, do you stop talking to anyone, stop drinking, and start listening in-depth to a song so that you can tell everyone why it sucks? Relax yourself, Agent. Jet is pop music, here to entertain those without any taste. I understand that, but that doesn't change the fact that they're perfectly inoffensive.

There aren't any groundbreaking artists, which is my major problem with what comes out in the pop music world these days. This is also beside the point, but I do in fact point out why I think terrible music is terrible. If a party happens to be blaring shit I can't tolerate, I'll leave. I've booed bar bands before. I'm a jerk like that.

As for analyzing and digesting an artist's work, yes I do in fact do that. That's how one understands things better.

No, but if someone is keen enough to put, say, DJ Shadow's "Building Steam With A Grain of Salt" or a similarly incredible song on a mix, I'll listen to it while I'm there, sip my drink, and be overjoyed that I got to hear that song right then. You can dance to some music; you can dance to or listen in detail to some incredible music.

The "music is mindless entertainment" argument is fine if that's how you yourself want to approach music, but there's no way you're convincing me that the best music is anything but great art. I listen to music both as an escape and an enrichment; I like music, and I adore great music. Figuring out what's great and why I think it's great is half the fun.
