I agree they're playing pretty good ball right now, but their shoddy defense is going to play a factor eventually. Trust me, if a team has a big flaw, it'll eventually be exposed and end up playing a role. Look at the Cubs and Red Sox' pens from last season. Both wound up being costly flaws. As for Casey, he's been on a roll all season, but you people are insane if you think he's actually going to keep this up all season. He's been in the big leagues for seven years, so his offensive numbers aren't just going to go through the roof like that. He may be having a career season, but things will eventually level out. We aren't in the beginning of the season anymore, but there's still 110 games to be played. If he can actually keep those numbers up, more power to him. But looking at past seasons and this season, I just don't see that actually happening.
geniusMoment Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Casey was playing with a broken pelvis and tailbone last year and a torn abdominal muscle the year before, that is why his numbers dropped off. A better gage of his numbers when healthy would be 1999 when he was still learning to hit and 2000, his numbers will be down then a little due to a broken hand. Tony Gwynn said of Casey the first time he saw him hit in 1998, "That kid is going to win a batting title."

I think the Astros have the best team in the national league, and the Cubs if healthy are close. I have never claimed the Reds would win their division, and I agree the Reds do have flaws. They have a crappy bullpen, a questionable starting staff and a weak bench. I just want you to let me enjoy the good so far, being reminded after every positive post about how the reds will suck in the end makes baby jesus cry.

He said if he got a hit in the 9th to pinch run for him. I can picture the headline now, Casey done for the year, tears hamstring in two.

For someone who's playing his last season, he's doing good. Phils shoulda brought in Madson if they wanted to win...he hadn't pitched at all in the series and he did well against the Mets last week. They did bring Madson in. He gave up the tying home run to Zeile in the eighth.

He's not 100% yet, but here's hoping he can go a strong six and leave with a lead. It's great to see him back on the field. He was always my favorite Marlins pitcher (until some other guy who always winds up in my sig came along).

Cheek called 4,306 consecutive regular-season games, plus 41 more in the postseason, since the Blue Jays began playing in 1977. He was expected to be back with the team Friday night in the second game of a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics. Cheek's 86-year-old father, also named Tom, died Thursday morning in Salinas, Calif. ``That was sad news,'' manager Carlos Tosca said. ``We're all grieving with him. That's an incredible streak.'' Injured outfielder Frank Catalanotto sat in for a portion of the broadcast after doing some light running earlier in the day as part of his rehab. ``On behalf of the entire organization, I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the Cheek family,'' team president and CEO Paul Godfrey said in a statement. ``Tom's dedication and contributions to the Toronto Blue Jays organization are immeasurable.''

They need a sweep against Pittsburgh to stay alive or else I really think they're through. Yeah I know it's only June. There's less than four months for the Cubs to get out of 4th place, and frankly, I'm scared.
Guest Choken One Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 I love how for cubs fans...being 4.5 games behind means certain death... It's 4 and 1/2 games! It's not an impossible feat...I've seen teams come back from being 10+ before...when they get 8 games back...THEN you can worry. Besides...Pittsburgh will slip...St. Louis doesn't have it and eventually Casey and the bats of cincy will cool down...it's up to the cubs to STEP UP. They are lucky to be this close at this point with the rapid injury rate they have had.
