Michael Moore Hates America

Recommended Posts

LOS ANGELES(AP) "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore's assault on President Bush, took in $8.2 million to $8.4 million in its first day, positioning it as the weekend's No. 1 film, its distributors said Saturday.

Based on Friday's numbers, "Fahrenheit 9/11" was on track for an opening weekend that would surpass the $21.6 million total gross of Moore's "Bowling for Columbine," his 2002 film that earned him an Academy Award for best documentary.

"Bowling for Columbine" holds the record for highest domestic gross among documentaries, excluding concert films and movies made for huge-screen IMAX theaters.

Friday grosses for "Fahrenheit 9/11" ran about $1.5 million ahead of its closest competitor, the Wayans brothers comedy "White Chicks." The performance of "Fahrenheit 9/11" was even more remarkable considering it played in just 868 theaters, fewer than a third the number for "White Chicks."

"Fahrenheit 9/11" benefited from a flurry of praise and condemnation. Supporters mobilized liberal-minded audiences to see it over opening weekend to counter efforts by some right-wing groups to discredit the film.

"It always helps when there's a group out there that says, 'Don't go see this movie. It's bad for you,'" said Jonathan Sehring, president of IFC Films, one of the film's distributors.

"Fahrenheit 9/11" paints Bush as a neglectful president who ignored terrorism warnings before Sept. 11, then stirred up fear of more attacks to win public support for the Iraq war. The movie won the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The film has ridden a wave of publicity since just before Cannes, when Moore began assailing Disney for refusing to let subsidiary Miramax release "Fahrenheit 9/11" because of its political content.

Miramax bosses Harvey and Bob Weinstein bought back the film and hooked up with Lions Gate Films and IFC to distribute it.

The fury over "Fahrenheit 9/11" resembled the firestorm created by Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," which rose to blockbuster status amid debate over whether it was anti-Semitic.

"It's like how 'The Passion of the Christ' redefined what a certain genre of movie could do at the box office, 'Fahrenheit 9/11' is doing the same thing," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. "This blows away any conceivable record for box office of a documentary."

3.  No, I don't listen Rush's show and I don't know of too many on here that do.

I love talk radio. I don't necessarily form my opinions based on what some talk-radio host says; I listen to be entertained. If they mention a story that I might consider using in a future debate with someone, I usually look for that story on the Net to get it in full context or something...

Something tells me Moore (or miramix) isn't gonna be giving writing any royalty checks to all the outraged right-wingers that help promote this movie.

Despite all his wheezing, heeing and hawing about the right, he knows where his meal ticket is, and probably wouldn't give up much of his right-wing opponents for all the whiskey in ireland.

Glenn Beck owns Rush and Hannity.

His lawyer's holiday greeting killed me. That, and "Real American A-Holes" is usually gold.

Something tells me Moore (or miramix) isn't gonna be giving writing any royalty checks to all the outraged right-wingers that help promote this movie.

I guess it'd be mean to mention that, probably, Triumph of the Will did pretty good numbers at the box office, too.

Michael Moore is an old

Just turned 51, that's not too old.

gay

Well, he's married and has a daughter, so he's doing a good job of hiding it.

fat

Well, duh.

and stupid loser

Ouch.

I was just stating the obvious. His obsession with Bush is downright disturbing.

OK, Mr. Rico.

He said on Conan (I think, maybe it was the Daily Show) that he'd send them Christmas cards. Maybe he'll slip some cash in there, or at least make a donation in their name to the Human Fund.

Yes, because a propoganda film that was likely one of the few movies Germans were allowed to see = a film on 800 screens (average screen count of a major motion picture is 2000, by the way) that right wing groups all but tried to destroy before it was released.

Whether you agree with him or not, equating Moore to Nazi propoganda is just stupid. In one case, you got the RULING party paying, filming, and releasing a film to an audience under their subjugation and in the other case, you've got a man making a film ABOUT the RULING party he opposes. No, I'm not equating Bush with Hitler. Maybe you right wingers should send a few guys to film school instead of having them all work for lobbying firms and GOP think tanks. Diversify. :-)

Poor, oppressed Mikey Moore.

Well, Nazi propaganda did tend to be more subtle.

Maybe we just need for disgusting, useless, fat hypocritical fucks.

Why do you make fun of Michael Moore? Because his viewpoint is different than yours? That's all I'm seeing here. "I disagree with Mikey so I hate him!" Well I disagree with George Bush a lot but I don't hate him and make fun of him all the time. Not at all.

And no he doesn't hate America. I'm pretty sure he loves this country and that's why he criticizes what is going on. He doesn't agree with the government so he's saying something about it. Just because you disagree with what the government is doing doesn't mean you hate them. The beauty of this country is that you are allowed to speak out against the goverment and disagree with the actions they are taking. That's why it is a free country. And in the same vein you're allowed to defend the country for what they are doing and applaud there decisions.

The problem is that people like Michael Moore take the criticizing to an extreme and people like MikeSC take the defending to an extreme. Well not everyone(read: me) are like this but if you say anything for or against the government you are already categorized as an extremeist like those two. q

yes, and you shouldn't. Hitler was responsible for the deaths of 6 million people. Bush is only responsible for the deaths of a couple of thousand. he still has a ways to go. :D

I'd have no trouble with Moore if he...oh I don't know, told the truth every now and then.

Considering I'm not right wing or left wing or whatever the hell wing people tend to toss themselves into cause they have nothing better to do, I have a dislike for Moore cause he is a sleazy car dealer who occasionally makes movies.

Course I can't decide who I dlsike more, O'Reilly or Moore. Probably equally since they are both lying loud mouths.

Dear Damaramu,

first of all let's make one thing clear: That man is disgustingly obese.

Second of all: I find it ironic that you question our use of freedom of speech and then talk about how it is a great thing and how Moore is using it.

I, personally (meaning that I'm not speaking for Mike SC, who can be very funny but whom I usually don't agree with), make fun of Michael Moore because he's the epitome of a 15 year old on Indy-Media.

He slings around powerful ideas, subjects that command a certain ammount of respect and calm contemplation like a chimp would throw his feces. He makes no good points, he only points out problems but offers no sollutions. In the end he's the fat, sub-urban (in his case stinking rich) kid who posts inanity after inanity on the internet.

In short: He's a bully, he's full of shit and he's pretty much abusing the term "documentary". I don't personally like him and I guess that making fun of him makes me feel better about the whole deal. Because he can never deny that he's close to being fat enough to be classified as a sea-mammal, the kind that can only sustain and support its massive body in the water.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Hero to all Children.

having not seen the movie, and being ambivalent about moore as a filmmaker, i just want to say that leni riefenstahl is an overrated hack who got way more attention than she deserved.

that is all.

Funny how the only thing that you can offer up is dissing him for being fat. Sounds like a little feces flinging of your own there, chief.

well that won't be hard, because you know Moore haters will settle for ANYONE that claims Moore is a liar and automatically claim their word as golden, no matter how biased and ridiculous their own arguments happen to sound. It is really a revolving door.

Okay, you want something of value?

I .. find it hard to say anything of value when it comes to Michael Moore. That man is nothing short of fluff. He takes a bunch of random facts, half-truths and straight-out lies (such as interviews that never actually happened, which is a lot easier to incorporate into a book than a "documentary.") Which he then presents in the most controversial and rethorically compelling fashion possible.

And even if you're smart, as long as you want to hear these kind of things and want them to be true you will have a hard time finding the inaccuracies. But if you dig deeper than shallow it becomes blatantly obvious. It's crash journalism, yellow paper quality articles. Sometimes I have the sneaking suspicion that Weekly World News has him on their payroll.

That guy is a stinking hypocrite. He's rich, lives in the finer parts of New York since 14 years, sends his daughter to a private school, he decries racism and censorship. He's also "working class" and from Flint, Minnesota. He believes that we shouldn't segregate the rich and poor, affording the first a better education and the latter dirt. One my favorite claims is that if the 9-11 flights had had more black people aboard they would have successfully fought and defeated the terrorists.

Censorship? Critisize him or his movie and he'll totally sue you, d00d.

Okay, he knows that he doesn't stand a chance with libel and defamation lawsuits. So it's really a hollow threat but it's a damned nice example.

He's like Idi Amin - without all the laughs. (This may just be my favorite quote.)

That guy is a political cancer. He's loud, he's obnoxious, he's frequently wrong and he's smug about it. A god damned Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter on the other side of the paranoid, dellusional political spectrum who really, really, really wants to be a Canadian.

So there, you have it. The guy is intellectually speaking disgusting. A gifted showman and sophist, but absolutely despicable on a professional or at least politically civilized level. Like an over-sized 15 year old who never grew out of the trash-kick-burn-rebellion-everyone's-against-me phase.

And boy is he fat. Okay, that's actually more of a running joke by now but damnit, even the Observer in the UK can't stop calling him fat in various creative ways. Why do I mention this constantly? You can twist the facts, you can deny all things he ever said that go contray to his current policy and you can deny that two plus two is four. (A small tribute to Orwell, with whom he seems to be obsessed himself.) But by god you can't deny that this man is obese.

One quick thing.... Flint is in Michigan.

He made some good points in the movie... but then he derailed them I think with outrageous accusations.

Of course the crowd after the movie gave a standing ovation to it. I live in a state of insane liberals so....

Contrary to popular belief, i'm willing to bet most people who saw this movie gave it an ovation no matter where they are from.

Like I said the movie was decent outside of Moore's predatory tactics of using the worst moment's of the soldiers and some of the footage of the injured in Iraq to get his point across with shock.

Why do you make fun of Michael Moore?

It's fun and easy. You should try it.

Because his viewpoint is different than yours? That's all I'm seeing here. "I disagree with Mikey so I hate him!" Well I disagree with George Bush a lot but I don't hate him and make fun of him all the time. Not at all.

I could list a LITANY of problems with that clogged artery in the heart of life --- but I doubt it'll make a difference.

And no he doesn't hate America. I'm pretty sure he loves this country and that's why he criticizes what is going on.

By all reports, he does a nice job of sanitizing life in Iraq under Saddam.

He doesn't agree with the government so he's saying something about it. Just because you disagree with what the government is doing doesn't mean you hate them.

His statements about Americans indicates otherwise.

The beauty of this country is that you are allowed to speak out against the goverment and disagree with the actions they are taking.

Yes, you can. And I can call him a useless fat fuck. Ain't it grand?

That's why it is a free country. And in the same vein you're allowed to defend the country for what they are doing and applaud there decisions.

And I'm allowed to blast Moore. Freedom is beautiful.

The problem is that people like Michael Moore take the criticizing to an extreme and people like MikeSC take the defending to an extreme. Well not everyone(read: me) are like this but if you say anything for or against the government you are already categorized as an extremeist like those two. q

I thought he was a useless fat fuck when he bashed Clinton, too.

Oh, then please, all knowing 2GOLD, offer us up some truths to put his hysterical lies to rest.

I can direct you to numerous web sites that just shred TONS of what he has written and put in films --- plus one site that, using his techniques, links Moore to the bin Laden family.

But, that usually doesn't impress his supporters.

well that won't be hard, because you know Moore haters will settle for ANYONE that claims Moore is a liar and automatically claim their word as golden, no matter how biased and ridiculous their own arguments happen to sound. It is really a revolving door.

And my point is proven.

Funny, I have no problem calling O'Reilly an over-self-important gasbag of purified shit --- but you have a hard time saying the same for Moore.

Funny, because I never said O'Reily was anything like that, EVER. However "gasbag of purified shit" certainly is original, so I may have to use that again some time......
