NBA Offseason News and Moves

Here is ESPN Insider's Chad Ford's opinion on the T-Mac situation

Option 1: The Rockets are rumored to be in the lead, offering a combo of Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato for McGrady and Juwan Howard. That sounds like a fantasy trade that every other owner would veto. We know John Weisbrod is a hockey guy, but even he should know this is a terrible deal for the Magic. If the Rockets pull this off, pencil them into the Western Conference Finals.

Option 2: The Pacers want to get something done but aren't giving up Ron Artest, Al Harrington, Jonathan Bender and Jamaal Tinsley for T-Mac. It's just too much. The deal would be Harrington and either Artest or Bender. That's as far as they're willing to go. The team doesn't really want to trade either Artest or Bender, and they certainly won't ship away both players -- even for T-Mac. Add Harrington and Bender to a front court with Emeka Okafor, and the Magic could be set for a long time. They'd have to seriously consider it.

Option 3: The Suns are willing to give up Shawn Marion, Casey Jacobsen and either the No. 7 or Joe Johnson for T-Mac. Marion is an all-star caliber small forward. With the No. 7 pick, the team could land a top-notch point guard like Devin Harris, Ben Gordon or Shaun Livingston. Jacobsen is serviceable at the two. Put that together with the No. 1 pick -- an Okafor/Gordon reunion, perhaps? -- and the Magic would be back in the playoffs almost immediately.

Option 4: The Clippers may have the best package to offer, but would T-Mac play there? One source close to McGrady told Insider he'd "consider it." Why? Because the huge media market would make his endorsement opportunities much more lucrative. The Clippers also would have a pretty strong starting group with Elton Brand, McGrady, Chris Kaman, a re-signed Quentin Richardson and Marko Jaric. The team would be willing to give up Corey Maggette, Chris Wilcox and the No. 2 to get McGrady. That's a slam dunk for the Magic, who could draft Okafor and either Dwight Howard or Shaun Livingston to make one of the best young teams in the NBA. If McGrady believes the Clippers will keep spending, it would be an opportunity he'd have to consider. It may be the only way the Clippers are willing to do the trade.

Which way will the Magic go? The Suns, Clippers and Pacers all look like they could make offers that might make Weisbrod pull the trigger. Some of it will come down to T-Mac's preference. He wants to play in Houston, but the Rockets' offer isn't close to those of the other three teams. At the end of the day, I see either the Suns or Clippers landing him.

According to Plaschke of the L.A. Times, Shaq might be dealt to Dallas for Nowitzki and Finley. Apparently, Cuban is willing to do ANYTHING to land Shaq.

from MSNBC.com...

Carter-for-Iverson deal reportedly discussed

76ers would acquire swingman, draft Nelson to run point

Matthew Craig / AP

Although much of the NBA off-season talk has been dominated by the possible breakup of the Los Angeles Lakers, a big trade of superstars is reportedly in the works.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in talks with the Toronto Raptors about swapping point guard Allen Iverson for forward Vince Carter, WIP-Radio in Philadelphia reported this weekend.

The Raptors would gain toughness, while the 76ers would then use their first-round draft pick, No. 9 overall, to draft St. Joseph's guard Jameer Nelson to run their offense, the radio station reported.

New Philadelphia coach Jim O'Brien said last month that he didn't consider Nelson a top-10 pick, but that was a calculated red herring, WIP reported.

Iverson has signed a long-term extension with the 76ers, but he rankled team management when he clashed with interim coach Chris Ford and sat out the end of the season with injuries.

Carter, with the nickname "Air Canada," has drawn boos for not always playing hard and appearing to not play through injuries. However, he did play 73 games last season.

Iverson averaged 26.4 points per game last season. Carter scored 22.5 points per game, and Nelson, the NCAA player of the year, scored 19.4 points per game and led the Hawks to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

After reading that article, I think the Clippers deal would be the best for the Magic. However, I still want to see T-Mac in Houston. And the trade cited in the article is definitely not as bad for Orlando as the author makes it look. The Pacers deal is far worse and the Suns deal isn't much better.

On SC, they just said that Francis doesn't want to go to Orlando and is begging the Rockets to try to bring a third team into the deal.

Clippers/ Bobcats trade official

The Los Angeles Clippers today acquired the fourth and 33rd overall picks in the 2004 NBA Draft from the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for the second overall selection in the draft. In addition, Charlotte has agreed to select Clippers’ center Predrag Drobnjak in Tuesday’s expansion draft.

In making the announcement, Clippers’ Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor said, “This trade achieves a two-fold objective: First, we know we will get the player we want with the fourth pick, and second, it improves our salary cap flexibility with regard to potential free agent developments.”

Drobnjak averaged 6.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 61 games played in Los Angeles last season.

That Carter/AI deal wasn't reported on WIP. They talked about how that got blown out of proportion today. What happened was someone called in saying they heard the rumor, somewhere. The hosts talked about it for a couple minutes and said that it was not something the Sixers would do and there was no validity to the rumor.

Well, I can sleep safely now.

Come on Ainge, make the Celts the third team on this deal. Offer Orlando the two later round picks and Chucky Atkins for him. Steve Francis and Paul Pierce would be great.

ESPN is now saying the deal with the Rockets (the one in KAM's article) is likely to be final, provided the Bobcats don't take Cato, Mobley, or Howard in the expansion draft. The Rockets would also probably get Tyronn Lue and Andrew Declerq if the trade goes down.

That's A good trade. Howard Looks like a really good player to build your team around for the Bobcats.

For the Clippers, It will get what the Clippers really need, A Point Guard. Either they pick Devin Harris or (my fav) Ben Gorden. Ben Reminds more of Steve Franchise(less ballhog).

Oh, and speaking of the Clippers, according to "impeccable sources" on ESPN radio, a trade involving Shaq is very likely to go down in the coming days/week. In an ironic twist, Shaq will probably be dealt to the Clippers in exchange for Brand, Maggette, #4 pick in the draft and future 1st round picks. Look for this trade to become official in the coming days.

Yes and I also heard that in an even more ironic twist. Kobe, Payton, Malone and Fisher will sign with the Clippers as well.

So basically the starting five for the two LA teams is going to switch?

Ummm...you're way off, Unwritten Religion.

The Clippers have made it known they are taking Shaun Livingston with the 4th pick.

Oh... Even Better. But dude is to damn skinny. Like I said, Ben would be a better fit. Hell, I'll think he'll be the only person that put a impact in the NBA from this Draft class.

But I heard Ben might go to the Suns.

It's probably down to Ben Gordon and Livingston since they both worked out for the Clippers on Sunday.

Funny thing is that the AP article of the trade says they want Livingston and the ESPN article says they want Gordon.

I think that Livingston is the guy they want.

Houston will be in the same position they were this season.

I think Orlando got the better of the deal with Mobley and Francis. Who do you think will be Houston's PG?

How can anybody think the Magic got the better deal?

Francis doesn't even want to be there, even if he did, he's nowhere near as good as Mcgrady. Their also giving their second best player, Juwan Howard up for Mobley?
