Yeah, I'm really not feeling this game this year, and I marked out HUGE for HCTP from it's release up until even a few months ago. The new storylines could be passable, but the new additions just feel tacked on. The game is still the same arcade game it's been since 2000, and this game is and will continue to be nowhere close in terms of replicating actual wrestling matches.

Why the fuck can't someone just localize Fire Pro for PS2!?

I also thought the grappling system in HCTP was good. I stll play HCTP to this day and still enjoy it. Yeah, the season mode in HCTP is repetitive but its replayability is still high. I'm also not as pumped about Raw vs SD as I was last year with HCTP, but I will still check the game out and probably buy it.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with the grappling system.

The problems for me lie with the balance between characters, with the strength attribute playing too much of a role.

There's also the missing sense of impact and bad collision detection with a lot of moves, which they still can't fix or don't care about fixing even after five SD installments. They still use a lot of old animations, just with more polygons tacked on, which is part of the problem.

Exactly. New character models are overrated. I already thought HCTP's wrestlers looked realistic as hell, so why make them even better? I'm not complaing, but seriously THQ/Yukes, work on the move animations a little too. I think they still have the same Sky High in this game as from the first Smackdown.

6 days until the release BTW. I'll be picking it up the day it's released.

I traded in my Day of Reckoning for a preorder of this, so it had BETTER be good... though I was so frustrated with DoR that I would have traded it in for Just Bring It.

The grapple system is fine. I for one don't want or need a pinpoint grappling system a la Fire Pro. I don;t want something so arcade-y either, but I don;t want to be throwing my controller in frustration, either.

As ide I have said before, there needs to be more of a focus on the esoteric aspects, such as title and manager recognition. But lets face it; just like in the "real life" WWE, we represent a minority, and the majority will always be catered to.

I agree.

They should spend their time working on the gameplay and most notably, the GRAPPLING SYSTEM. If I wanted a fucking arcade game I'd play Wrestlemania Challenge.

The character models look fine, I have no gripe with that, but the playability of a wrestling game means a lot more to me.

But I guess I'm in the minority, so continue to support your crappy grappling system.

I also don't like the lack of some good options in other wrestling games, but that's a whole other argument.

I'm definitely gonna rent this one first to see if it has improved.

Yeah, and I did NOT like the models for the CAWs, either.

When I create my namesake CAW, he looks more or less like me. I simply could not do that. the freaking skin tones were a bitch to mess with, so I just said to hell with it and left him with orange skin.... didn;t matter much anyway, as the slow gameplay just left me cold.

Anyone know anything about the GBA Survivor Series game? It has good graphics, but...that means nothing.

Perhaps it will be good (like Fire Pro and Fire Pro 2), or it will be like every other portable wrestling game--bad. Heck, I've even played Big Bang Pro Wrestling on NGPC, which, despite having a casket match, an "on a pole" match, and a female "hidden" character with gignormous breasts, still was awful (mainly because of bad control).

Reviews are saying it's just a complete rehash of the last GBA game [i think it was Road to WM?] but with a few different characters.

I see...

Plus reviews and impressions from Gamefaqs basically say it's an average, middle-of-the-road, nothing-interesting game. So a $5 Fire Pro is still a way better deal than a $30 WWE game.

I'm looking forward to this game. Even though there is a limited roster, I think the challenges, CAB and CAPPV will be great. Especially the fact that if you put the belt up against your friend and lose, the other player is able to save the belt to his memory card.

So titles can change during exhibition matches now, or just created belts?

Only created titles.

That's gay. I still remember in SD 2 you could have title changes in exhibition mode. That would be one of the few changes I thought they would fix for SD vs Raw.

BTW, does anyone know any good sites that would have screenshots and/or videos of the belts. I preferably want to see if they updated the look of the World Heavyweight belt.

I guess they figure it will mess up the season mode storylines if the champions keep changing via exhibition mode.

Agreed. The balance in HCTP is godawful, and having to make a new guy's stats from scratch anytime you want to make anyone is lame. I should be able to edit a guy's stats however I like, making it easy to make multiple real life wrestlers that aren't in the game. I don't want to clone a guy with all-perfect stats because it would feel all wrong for anybody you'd make.

Speed was nigh-worthless as a stat.

They STILL didn't fix the awful-looking clipping in HCTP.

They removed modes of play for BRA AND PANTIES?!?

SvR will get a rent before I pick it up.

There should still be the ability to do title switches when you already unlocked the belts in Season Mode and completed the Mode. Though I do agree that if you start up Season Mode again, the belts should no longer be up for grabs in exhibition til the re-completion.

I've never been a fan of simulation style wrestling games. I like the fast pace/arcade style play that has been the trade mark of the Smackdown franchise.

I agree that the simulation style is more true to life than arcade, but when i'm playing the game with friends I enjoy a button masher with lots of high impact moves more than a slower paced simulation. It might be just a personal preference thing, but that's my view point anyway.

I've also always enjoyed the CAW feature in Smackdown and i'm really glad they have upped the polygons on the CAWs this time around. That is probably my favorite feature.

Sorry about the confusion over belt swapping. I was thinking earlier that maybe wal-mart or other stores that carry video games that around November 2nd after midnight the game might go on sale. Just a thought, I'm probably going to check it out.

I don't know if it will be all wal-mart or k-mart like stores, just those that are open 24 hours

Actually, isn't the series still running on the same engine it did on the PSX?

I don't think they switched it for PS2, just upped the graphics..

Nah, it's different. Play HCTP..then go and play SD1..it's a HUGe difference. For one going from SYM to HCTP they made the huge 'four different grapple manuevers' change where you have the strong, submission, quick, signature. The submission meter has changed a lot...seeing as well...there wasn't one at first. Reversal system is better. They upped the pace, which if you compare earlier SD to HCtP...it's a hell of a lot better. So yea...they have upgraded a lot, gameplay wise, it's just that some want some 'ultimate gameplay game, they fits only their liking' so they haven't even really realized it...

The review is up at ign.com. Basically from the review, the season mode is linear, the online mode sucks balls, the announcing and character speaking is horrible and the ai is stupid. You cant switch the rosters around which sucks as well. I know alot of people are going to be pissed by the online mode. Basically all you can do is go to a room and select either a one on one match or a bra and panties match. This is why I hate the WWE and THQ who wants to play a fucking bra and panties match besides a 11 year old who thinks it is cool. From the sound of the review it looks like I'll just keep playing HCTP and wait till next year.

Yeah, the review isn't looking too good.

Taken from GameFAQs, this is a basic rundown of the IGN Review.

WWE Smackdown vs Raw

Presentation - 8

Graphics - 9

Sound - 7

Gameplay - 8.5

Lasting Appeal - 8

OVERALL = 8.4

in camparison with......

WWE Here Comes the Pain

Presentation - 9.5

Graphics - 8.5

Sound - 7

Gameplay - 9

Lasting Appeal - 9

OVERALL = 9.1

Ok now lets look a little deeper. After reading the article, its pretty much everything we expected, with a few exceptions...ACCORDING to IGN............

Good

+ Graphics are the best EVER in a wrestling game

+ Face/Heel system

+ Better weight detection and damage

+ reversals/breakups in submission

+ mini games

+ Licensed music in game

+ entrance music

+ more CAW options

+ CAB and CAPPV

+ Parking lot brawl is fun

Bad

- Roster is missing the jobbers

- Online is too simple

- A.I. is still stupid

- licensed music is overdue(?!?!)

- there are a few weight glitches

- Career mode seems more linear

- voice over and commentary are not top quality

- only one backstage

- no Cruiser, wemons, or tag titles in season

And two other negatives I've heard which are pretty awful:

1) There is only alternate attire for two characters in the game - John Cena and someone else I'm not sure of yet.

2) You CAN NOT change the rosters of Raw and Smackdown before Season Mode starts.

......

Assuming all this is true, I just have no idea why THQ would take such a step back this year. Just terrible...
