Indy Wrestlers you do like...but why?

Recommended Posts

Guest Duncan Eternia

If you are reading this chances are you read/posted in Youth N Asia's thread on Indy guys you really can't stand. Well let's switch it up a a little bit. What indy wrestlers/other talent do you like but really don't know why? They might not be good workers or you feel they are underrated, but you enjoy watching them anyway.

My pick is Paul E. Normous. Not a good worker (from what I have seen), but I have seen him live a few times and usually enjoy what he does. I think he is a good big man heel.

Super Dragon all because of the asswhooping he gave to CM Punk. That, and he's just awesome.

Well, according to everyone that has a computer, Jimmy Rave's a dumb-head, but I think he's awesome. He bumps and sells great, can work the mat well, and even shows a good bit of charisma as a heel (again, see his recent TV match against Onyx).

I also think Murder-One's a heck of a brawler and old-school heel, but not many Wildside fans seem to agree.

I have absolutely no clue why, but Eddie Venom seems to be getting to my liking lately. It's almost like he's Nate Webb's awkward, meaner older brother...or it may just be the intentionally lame jokes he was making on the apron during the four-way tag him and Nate had against the New Bad Breed (Ian Rotten & Steve Stone), the Wildcards, and Icarus & Jigsaw in Highland a couple of months back.

Another guy that's been sporadically on IWA undercards lately that no one's really given any respect is Conrad Kennedy III. He can play quite the pompous ass heel, and he hung with Tracy Smothers at the March Highland show; that should say something.

Arik Cannon. I haven't seen people give him a lot of credit on this forum (maybe I've been looking in the wrong places), but I just really like him for some reason. He put on a really good technical wrestling match with Chris Hero at the No Limits Wrestling show, but I liked him ever since I first saw him at Simply The Best 5. I don't think a lot of people feel the same way, though.

I have a few.

5) Jack Evans - Spot Monkey or not, this guy is awesome. I truly enjoy watching him, one of my favourites.

4) Austin Aries - GeNeRaTiOn NeXt. Watched some ROH/ECWA stuff recently and Aries is gold.

3) Amazin Nate Mattson - BCW - This guy is very good. Good in the ring, good on the mic, good mat presence, I really enjoy him. Great talent IMO.

2) Teddy Hart - Like him or not, I do enjoy his in ring work. I really think he has a shot at being huge, if he can cool down backstage. I'll probably get bashed for liking him because no one else does, but fine. I enjoy watching him.

1) Chance Beckett - Seen him a few times up here in Canada, and he was also in the ECWA Super 8 Tournament in 2003 (I believe, 2003) in three matches. Took a deep cut, but fought through it and gave a pretty darn good match against London.

Favourite: Jimmy Rave - This guy is golden. A lot of people don't like him, but I think he is awesome. He can sell, he is quick, he's got moves, a good presence, and I've seen alot of his stuff. He's had some great matches, he's my pick for best/favourite indy wrestler.

Bryan Danielson. He's just a bad motherfucker and he's got a cool finisher to boot. This guy has put on more great matches in his short career then most wrestlers have in their ENTIRE career.

Alex Shelley, i've become a huge fan of his over the last 6 months or so. I like his in ring style, his use of psychology in working over a body part, the fact that he has some very cool submission moves and most of all, I really like his charisma. He just has a real subtle, cocky attitude about him.

I'm developing into a huge Shelley mark too. But just to pick some guys not mentioned so far:

Nigel McGuiness: His chainwrestling and counters are just amazing. Shame about his voice, but hey.

Xavier: I've gone from pretty much hating X to really enjoying his matches. I've seen a lot of innovative work from him lately.

Roderick Strong: Love the backbreakers, the energy, just a really, er, strong

worker.

Haha, my friend almost got into a fight with Strong when he did his one shot for 3PW.

Me and my boys are really into CJ O'Doyle. I have no idea why, he just caught on with us really fast. We even brought him the Irish Flag at one event, and he now brings it to the ring with him.

No offense (Shelley and Danielson are freakin' amazing), but I thought the thread was guys that you liked that, for some reason, everyone else didn't, or you didn't know why you liked them?

Yeah well....so much for my first idea....I guess its cool people are stating why certain guys are so well loved.

Um...usually British people have an accent, unless it's something I'm not picking up on.

Well, it's just he has this very high, cockney like voice. I mean, I'm English and it grates on me. It's not a big deal, I just kinda cringe at how much it stands out.

I love Joey Ryan. Some people think Scott Lost is better but I disagree, Joey Ryan is alot more technically sound then Scott. Though Scott has one hell of a elbow drop.

Also I think Excalibur and Discoe Machine are great workers. :firing:

i have a few: joel and jose maximo now normally i dont like spotty workers but these two have this real underdog appeal which really gets me to root for them. homicide: now i khnow the internets pretty big on this guy but i think they should be much bigger his long term selling can be a bit awry but he has improved it a lot as his roh match with amdrag proved. also it takes a lot of talent to come across as an underdog and a bad mofo at the same time. xavier: he had a good match with a.j styles thats the indie wrestling equivelent of macking chiken salad out of chiken shit.

Like a bunch of people said- Jimmy Rave. I don't have a fucking clue where this "no charisma" crap came from, because his selling is fantastic, he bumps his ass off, and is good at conveying pain and intensity ("tap tap tap") -I also mark out for the running knee. And for those who say he's never gotten over, listen to his pops in CZW from Divide and Conquer as well as Redefined->Cage of Death 5. Don't confuse "can't cut a promo" with no charisma.

Dunn and Marcos gotta get some love -I'm a big fan of comedy gimmicks, and these guys are great at portraying goofy, lovable underdogs. Plus, '80's glam rock =the rule.

I dig Corporal Robinson -not only is he a bad motherfucker, he's a lot better as a straight wrestler than people give him credit for. He had a really good straight-up brawl with Balls Mahoney at IWA STIFF and quite a few good mat clinics with Ian. He also carried a very nervous "Poison" Apollo Starr through a solid back-and-forth match at We Are Family.

Despite the CZW/XPW thing -I never really hated M-Dogg 20. When he's on, he's really fun to watch, and he's improved tenfold at being more of a "wrestler" since his last CZW stint.

I mark out for most of the IWS roster as well- Arsenal, Eddy, XES69, Green Phantom, and especially BEEF~! and I'm really excited to see them at TOD3 next weekend.

Edit: I forgot Jack Evans- besides highflying, his personality is going to carry him really far.

For whatever reason, I mark out for Cory Kastle.

I agree. I don't know why, but I really like the team of CKNY with Niles Young. Watching them against Blackout at Apocalypse, it was clear to see just how much better they are getting. A more obvious choice is Roderick Strong, whose IWA and CZW stuff I've loved so far. Gotta loves those backbreakers.

The Kid Kamikaze Experience featuring Kurt Lauderdale is probably a group that I don't think gets much credit. For starters, the name rules. Also they have the best theme song ever. Sure, Frankie Kazarian used it first (well besides the Karate Kid), but he's not nearly as cool as these guys. I find them to be very entertaining in the ring as well.

-Ruckus: Not the best wrestler in the world mind you.... but fun to watch.

-Justin Credible: He's not as bad as alot of people like to make him out to be. I quite like him actually.

- Another vote for Jimmy Rave.

-Frankie Kazarian: Very solid performer that gets put down by internet fans fairly often. He could hold his own against anybody...

-The ROH Board's favorite's Super Dragon/B-Boy/Chris Hero: Not underrated by many but routinely shit on by that god awful ROH board. Three of the best indy workers around peroid.

I'll edit some more in later.

I'm a huge mark for Nigel. Great wrestler and hella nice guy. Met him at an HWA show near me. He chatted for a while. Cool dude.

Another vote for Evans. He's amazing every time I see him. The bump he took at World Title Classic was INSANE.

Aries really impresses me, but I think he's getting pegged as teh next big indy thing, so ya know...

Jimmy Jacobs is great, but I guess some people don't like the goofy nature of hte gimmick.

I like what little I've seen of Matt Sydal.

Low Ki- While some people think the guy is too stiff, I dig the hell out of his work. Although that could change if he ever knocks me out with one of those goddamn kicks.

Justin Credible- Still hated for being pushed down our throats in ECW, the guy's a lot better worker than most give him credit for.

Necro Butcher- THE best deathmatch worker in the US. Actually very talented.

Jimmy Rave- I still don't get the hate...

Oh shit sorry, I didn't read the first post right, I just thought it was indy workers in general that you liked. As for someone under rated who I really enjoy watching in the ring, I don't know if he's a popular choice or not but I think Masada is pretty good. He's not the traditional "smart marks" choice, but I like how he's basically just this psychotic metalhead who beats the fuck out of opponents and does some pretyy cool high spots. I'll be interested to see where this Carnage Crew vs New Carnage Crew feud goes.

Guest Markingout

Jay Fury- Had an amazing showing at Trifecta 2, looks very solid, and has a sweet moveset (Jaytrix, and Moonsault German to name two). I definatly want to catch more of him.

I don't see alot of love for them, so I will just name them...

The Havana Pitbulls- Ricky and Rocky are so great. They can work any style, junior puro, American Strong Style, Lucha. They are so fun to watch, they have a natural heel presence which is great. The technique on their submissions is phenomenal. These guys are great.

And for those who say he's never gotten over, listen to his pops in CZW from Divide and Conquer as well as Redefined->Cage of Death 5. Don't confuse "can't cut a promo" with no charisma.

COD was 6 months ago, and now look at his pops, he is booed wherever he goes. I don't want to argue on the Jimmy Rave thing anymore, I realize I can't sway anyones minds.

Well, I just got into the indies scene last year. I was mostly just a fan of the WWE, but then I got a taste of indy wrestling late last year.

The wrestlers I like are mostly in the Northeast, not too sure if they have traveled...

Jay Lethal

What an amazing wrestler. He is a great lightweight wrestler, and he has a great build for such an age. This guys looks like he is in his mid 20's, and he is only 18 years old! A very well known lightweight wrestler in the NJ/NY area.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrelz

WOW. That's all I gotta say. They were JAPW (Jersey All Pro Wrestling) Tag Team Champs, and have had multiple organizations titles at the same time! They finally came to our area, and worked the crowd! One hell of a heel tag team, and most hated. They have been in some great matches.

The local indy fed I have been talking about is the AWA (American Wrestling Alliance). Man, that fed has gone way up. I remember the first couple of shows, the attendance was like 10-15 ppl. It showcased most of the students in the AWA. But, as time went on, more and more people showed up, the show was getting better, and because of that, more and more well known talent has appeared. They even got Chris Candido to show up with Sunny! Some guy that was with them said they are trying to get Ken Shamrock to appear in the show later this year, and I would love if that happened.

The Amazing Red. He is quick and just does shit that blows my mind. I love spot monkeys so Red, his cousins and Special K are some of my favorite indy talent. When I started watching TNA, AJ Styles was my favorite, but Red has replaced him.
