Guest croweater Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 The cancer can't get you if it passes through a straw first. and clearly all of my points were just Shut down by your laughter......... are you an only child? If not you surely must be the eldest.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 How do I put this? I know what smoking does, and I don't care. I'm not afraid of what could happen to me, and smoking is an even trade off for that. If you smoked, you would know this.
Art Sandusky Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Show some consideration for other people HAHAHAHAHA Magnificent. The cancer can't get you if it passes through a straw first. You're the knob now. I was clearly saying it was acceptable because it looked cool, not because it magically rid the cigarette of its toxic properties. I don't even smoke, but the argument from the anti-side here is really annoying.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 and clearly all of my points were just Shut down by your laughter......... are you an only child? If not you surely must be the eldest. good call Don't worry, I didn't beat you in an argument, I just didn't lose because there's nothing anyone can say in a million years that will make me quit, or even make it seem feasable to me. I'm indeed that stubborn and inconsiderate.
Guest croweater Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 You're the knob now. I was clearly saying it was acceptable because it looked cool, not because it magically rid the cigarette of its toxic properties. I don't even smoke, but the argument from the anti-side here is really annoying. Yea, I got that. My reply was in jest, nothing else, not being serious at all. I wish that the internet could somehow capture your tone it would make things much easier. I should have ended the sentance with [/Xander] The argument from the anti-side is "smoking hurts EVERYONE" The argument for the pro side is "I don't care!" ..... we are annoying in what way? again, I have no problem with people smoking as long as they don't force it upon everyone else. From what AoO has said he doesn't give a fuck if he's hurting anyone else. I don't care what he does to himself, but it's just rude, to say the least, to force smoke and its effects onto others.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted July 27, 2004 Author Report Posted July 27, 2004 This wasn't my intent, guys.
Guest croweater Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Well, to put all my arguments into context of the original post. Yeah, shit is terrible.
ulfistgut Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Smoking doesn't just affect you, it hurts the comunity as a whole to the tune of billions of dollars in lost productivity, and takes away services from other people who need them! Ah, but on the flip side; it makes money in taxes, provides community jobs for road sweepers to clear butts and also prevents alzheimers. All of which benefit the community. Thing I hate about the 'anti-smoking' argument that most often crops up is the "But it's entirely pointless, why do it". The possibility that smokers perhaps may enjoy smoking doesn't cross the non-smokers mind. To the non-smoker it's very clear cut : Start smoking to look cool -> Become addicted -> Die.
Guest croweater Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 road sweepers would still sweep roads with or without cigarette butts being there. Oh, and I completely agree with the .....er......unpointlessness of smoking. Humans do 100s of pointless things a day..... typing this reply for instance. At least smoking has an actual physiological effect and some kinda "buzz" associated with it. In this sense it has a deeper purpose than watching an episode of Sponge Bob Square Pants.
Ace309 Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 In this sense it has a deeper purpose than watching an episode of Sponge Bob Square Pants. Hey! HEY! Do NOT knock the Sponge!
ulfistgut Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 road sweepers would still sweep roads with or without cigarette butts being there. We give them the extra hours with which there would be no feeding for their family. And there is a point to smoking - it's pleasurable. From before any semblance of an addiction began to manifest itself - it was pleasurable, thats why I started and thats why I continue. I guess you could say theres no point in any human excess; why not just eat the same basic meat, veg, bread and water everyday, exercise and just exist (whats the point of doing anything else - you just run the risk of shortening your life - they found a diet that could lengthen human life by many years - but it involves eating miniscule amounts of grain, so no-one does it, trading off the long life for pleasurable one) Plus smoking looks cool, which is a massive point in it's favour
Guest croweater Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I saw a lung last wednesday which looked more like a colon. It was foul. Didn't look cool at all.........well, it did......but not to have, just to look at. The problem with any smoking debate is that non-smokers feel the need for smokers to justify their actions. Smokers don't feel the need for justification (there's the whole it's my choice and I enjoy it arguments, but that's not satisfying at all for the non-smokers). This argument has fallen into the same hole.
Highland Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I don't smoke, but my friends do. I otherwise don't care, but it does piss me off that my clothes reek of smoke after I come home from visiting them.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I think they smell good, too. I also find girls smoking to be erotic, and refuse to ever date a nonsmoker.
Art Sandusky Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I'd prefer a nonsmoker, but will get with someone who socially does it. Super chain-smoking addicts are out though.
AboveAverage484 Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 The two things that piss me off the most about smokers: (a) when they smoke in non-smoking places (b) when they take breaks every hour at work to smoke one (pussies, I work a whole shift with maybe one five minute break to eat a pack of crackers and a root beer) © Okay three things; when they don't have enough money to buy themselves toilet paper or their babies diapers, but they always have enough money for cigarettes or weed (not all, just some, mainly the poorer ones)
Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Answering B: Who the fuck can even do that at their job anyway? If I ever tried to pull that shit at any job I ever had(and I've had a decently wide range of jobs) I'd be out on my ass. Answering C: when I was poor and living in my car I had to prioritize smoking with eating all the time. Somedays you just have to go without. without eating one day and smokes the next that is. Not the same thing but it relates kinda. With that said, I am of the opinion that one day all the smoking metallers should quit for a day and run wild over the board.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I smoke three cigarettes during my 15 minute breaks at work. 4 at lunch (30 minutes)
Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 That's about how I remember it during my days at the old shake mill. We also used to be able to get away with the odd one when we were doing tedious outside jobs on the yard, but since there was dry ass trees and sawdust everywhere, you didn't wanna fuck with that too much.
AboveAverage484 Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Well when you work at a pizza place where ¾ of the people smoke, including the manager and all three assistant managers, shit like that happens.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Clearly because of smoker superiority. You want breaks, too, don't you? Just start smoking.
Corey_Lazarus Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Here's my reason for smoking: stress. You know how stressful your day is? An average day for me is dealing with the huge loads of shit thrown at me from my girlfriend, dealing with orders for pizzas and calzones for 5 hours, trying to find money for gas since my job pays for shit, coming home to find that there's no food left in my house because nobody's been shopping in three weeks, and getting shit from every single person I know for things that aren't my fault. Sounds like an average day for most people, right? Maybe not the specifics, but the gist of it, right? So how do you deal with your stress? I smoke. I smoke because it helps me calm down. I smoke because I actually do enjoy the flavor. I smoke because I want to. I'm not going to smoke in a non-smoking section. I'm not going to smoke in front of people that ask me not to. I'm not going to try to pressure somebody into taking a cigarette. Stop preaching, boys.
AboveAverage484 Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Clearly because of smoker superiority. You want breaks, too, don't you? Just start smoking. So I can have rotten-ass teeth and yellow fingernails? Hell, no! It's not the fact that them smoking pisses me off, it's the fact that they do it just as an excuse for a break. Shit, I'm more big on people eating garbage and then wonder why they're fat as hell, than ragging on people that smoke.
Guest Dids Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I don't smoke. I've seen what it did to my Dad's folks and what it's doing to him. Plus I find setting things on fire and them sticking them in my mouth to be weird. That said, the stupid "anti-smoker" attitude that some of y'all are copping is lame. The only thing that bothers me is when smokers seem driven by their need for nicotine. When my Dad smokes, he waits for a break, and slips outside, and doesn't break the conversation. When my sister needs a smoke she just seems like a "drop-evertthing-almost-miss-a-plane-because-she-needed-a-smoke" addict. Like any habit, I don't object to it until it starts being the thing that drives you and starts making you a shitty person to be around.
AboveAverage484 Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 You pretty much hit the nail on the head, Dids. All those people that act like they just HAVE TO HAVE ONE RIGHT FUCKIN NOW IM SHAKIN SO BAD are just pussies in my opinion. Grow a ball sack and suck it up. No offense to anybody on this board, but that's the way I feel about some of those people at work.
Guest Dids Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Please note- I was NOT attempting to agree with Mr. Ihaveanoriginalscreenname. I've got no beef with somebody using their breaks to smoke. It's not that you do it, it's how you do it.
Guest Calandro Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I have been smokin for 10 years. I have trtied twice to quit cold-turkey but couldnt't. It's funny I saw this thread, since I am going to my doc on Thurs. for other methods.
Nevermortal Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I don't smoke, but I have absolutely no problem with other people smoking around me because I don't believe in second hand smoke bullshit theories about how you get cancer from being in a 30 inch proximity from a lit cigarette. The only problem I've ever had with cigarettes in my life was during my time working at Gamestop. EVERY OTHER EMPLOYEE SMOKED. I was the lone wolf. And because of their smoking, they got to take cigarette breaks like every hour or some shit, but when I wanted to take a bathroom break or just sit there and dick around for a bit, I got bitched at. I contemplated starting a habit then.
Guest Danny Dubya v 2.0 Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I support whatever weeds (mostly) unwanted people from the population earlier on. Hooray for smoking.
UZI Suicide Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I don't smoke, but I'm not going to tell people not to smoke, I just wish they wouldn't. People who smoke don't know what they are doing to themselves and the affects it will have later, they think they do, but they don't. I know people in their 40's and 50's who are just totally fucked up from smoking, can barely walk even with an oxygen tank, barely breathe. Everyone of them I talk to says when they were younger they had the same attitude people who smoke nowadays do..."I know what can happen to me, I don't care what happens 40 years from now, I like doing it now so I'm going to do it, etc.", but when reality sets in later on in life, they look back on it wishing they had never started. It's a cycle that sucks you in and never has a good ending.
