I didn't mention 9/11..that WAS a terrorist act.

I'd like to believe that this latest warning isn't being over hyped but I don't think I can be blamed for being sceptical.

Actually, you can.

It's nice to know that it's going to take an actually successful terrorist attack for you to wise up.

BEFORE the attacks, Good luck convincing the President that we needed a Department of Homeland Security.

Let's not speak poorly about Bill Clinton - he's no longer in office.

It's now perfectly clear that the intelligence used to present this new terror warning is 3 - 4 years old. Yes, Al Qaeda were planning an attack: it happened on September 11th, 2001.

I am sickened that Bush has used this old intelligence to justify a terror warning, scaring some people shitless in an attempt to make himself look good. Al Qaeda have attacked on a grand scale SINCE this intelligence! Hopefully a few more people will wake up to what Bush is about from this - sadly, many Americans will be too blinkered.

Crap.

Having being involved with Counterterrorism I’ve seen numerous threat briefings that attempted to predict possible terrorist strategies out of the very obscure intelligence. Security is often amped up on the flimsiest of premises, as a matter of policy. I’ve personally known of specific security measures in response to analysis of vague intelligence reports dating back more than five years.

Why? The best deterrence against terror attack is to present a “hard target profile” to the would-be attackers. Al-Qaeda operatives typically spend months and years surveiling a potential target. Increase security and we fuck up their planning process, and maybe force them to abandon a plan altogether.

The best time to screw up a terrorist plan is during this planning period. If surveillance can be made, movement of the reconnaissance elements can be reported, and ultimately capture an entire terrorist cell. (see: Buffalo)

Your post is so mind-numbingly idiotic that I literally feel my IQ start to drop a few points simply by reading it.

Please just read Cerebus' post. He has far more patience, it would seem, in dealing with those such as you.

Why did Bush choose to go public now, after the Dem Convention?...and not 3 years ago when the threat was made, or weeks ago when the administration received all this info?

Pretty sad how it looks like politics is trumping national security in the Bush camp.

Do none of you read or listen to the news?

Yes, it's old information.

The reason they're even bringing it up is that they've been hearing a lot of "chatter", as the term is used, which have referenced those old plans.

It doesn't fucking matter how old the plans are, they received information that Al-Qaeda may still be looking to hit financial institutions.

But just dismiss it all off as political manueverings by Bush - and don't be surprised when you're written off as the morons that you are for believing that way.

Why not release this news 3 weeks ago? Why wait until rigt after the Dem convention?

I have no idea how valid these tips are, nor do you...but why didnt he tell us right away? Why wait until his opposition is conveniently on their bounce from the convention? Why endagner the chance of a terror attack over the past couple weeks?

It is but not for the reason you say.

Dana Priest is not J. Ingles-le Nobel, but I've always thought she was always a good person from the media to get info about intel. This interview will tell you a lot more about the whole thing since it is, unsurprisingly, pretty clear you don't know what the fuck you are taking about.

Jesus, Mikey has quite the sandy vagina in this thread.

The suspicion of these terror warnings being raised at opportune times for the administration (i.e. right after the convention, during the Abu Graib scandal, etc.) has been evident over the last year or so; it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Bush could be playing his trump card whenever something would be sending him spiralling in the polls. However, when the threat level is actually raised (i.e. this time), it probably is less politically motivated than usual. Remember, we've had such retarded terror warnings as "look out for people wearing coats in the summer!" and "look out for people who smell bad, they could be carrying chemical weapons!" on the eve of a precipitous fall in Bush's approval ratings. Those are probably more politically motivated than this, in which there is apparently more concrete information.

Didn't you read the first page of this thread?

Much of this information has only come out through the interrogation of the Al Qaeda operative captured in Pakistan; the information is very current, in terms of when it was obtained, and likely had to be somewhat verified before it was disclosed to the public by Ridge.

Why didn’t they put it out 3 weeks ago? Probably because they didn’t have it / couldn’t verify it three weeks ago.

Christ, the conspiracy theories on this board will kill me yet. I known JFK-assassination conspiracy theorists that are less crazed than some of you here.

I wonder if Mike got this angry when the Republicans were saying that Clinton attacked Iraq to distract the media from the Monica Lewinsky affair...

oh wait, I forgot. Clinton is perfectly capable of doing that, but Bush? Of course not... he's the crusader for truth and wisdom

Do any of you (except Cerebus) know the first thing about intelligence-gathering and counterterrorism?

"OMG WE WUZ ALREADY ATTAX0RED~!!!!!11" That kind of shortsighted, idiotic thinking will lead to thousands more deaths. It's a good thing cretins like you have no power in this country.

I find this statement highly ironic for some reason...

I don't care if they hate Republicans. That's fine - we're a free country, hate who you want.

Just have a fucking rational thought in your head. That's all I ask.

Obviously my point that the plans found were for an attack that ALREADY HAPPENED went over a few people's heads.

How anyone can trust Bush now is beyond me.

Did you actually read the article? I don't remember any big financial institutions being attacked in the last 3 or 4 years. Just because the plans for these are a few years old doesn't mean that they aren't still active plans, and apparently the chatter on the terrorist network is at a very high level.

But you don't really care for reading the articles, do you? You just tend to spout of your mindless crap without thinking, I'd imagine.

It's like arguing with a rock, it really is.

Hell, on the nightly news tonight - August 4, 2004 - it was reported that yes, the information was 3 to 4 years old, but that recent interrogations of captured Al-Qaeda operatives have shown at least two things:

1. That the attack plans were RECENTLY accessed - accessed this year - by Al Qaeda operatives. And,

2. Al-Qaeda operatives have disclosed that the plan was still considered "operational" by the terrorist organization.

THAT is the reason for the terrorist alert - because regardless of whether the information is years old, Al Qaeda still seems to view it as a viable plan. And as such, people need to be warned.

Keep on thinking that this is all just a ploy by Bush, and people like me will keep mocking you.

Vyce, Cerebus...just...don't. There's no point. Don't waste your energy. He's either incredibly irrational and delusional or just plain dumb.

INXS, don't worry about that bad man Mr. Bush anymore. Here's something fun to play with to take your mind off of it:
