McCain condemns anti-Kerry ad

Calls on White House to follow suit

Thursday, August 5, 2004 Posted: 1:35 PM EDT (1735 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican Sen. John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, called an ad criticizing John Kerry's military service "dishonest and dishonorable" and urged the White House on Thursday to condemn it as well.

"It was the same kind of deal that was pulled on me," McCain said in an interview with The Associated Press, referring to his bitter Republican primary fight with President Bush.

The 60-second ad features Vietnam veterans who accuse the Democratic presidential nominee of lying about his decorated Vietnam War record and betraying his fellow veterans by later opposing the conflict.

"When the chips were down, you could not count on John Kerry," one of the veterans, Larry Thurlow, says in the ad.

Thurlow didn't serve on Kerry's swiftboat, but says he witnessed the events that led to Kerry winning a Bronze Star and the last of his three Purple Hearts.

Kerry's crewmates support the candidate and call him a hero.

The ad, scheduled to air in a few markets in Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin, was produced by Stevens, Reed, Curcio and Potham, the same team that produced McCain's ads in 2000.

"I wish they hadn't done it," McCain said of his former advisers. "I don't know if they knew all the facts."

Asked if the White House knew about the ad or helped find financing for it, McCain said, "I hope not, but I don't know. But I think the Bush campaign should specifically condemn the ad." (Special Report: America Votes 2004)

Later, McCain said the Bush campaign has denied any involvement and added, "I can't believe the president would pull such a cheap stunt."

The White House and Bush-Cheney campaign did not address McCain's call that they repudiate the spot, though a Bush spokesman said the campaign does not question Kerry's highly decorated war service. McCain is co-chair of Bush's campaign in Arizona.

'Old wounds'

In 2000, Bush's supporters sponsored a rumor campaign against McCain in the South Carolina primary, helping Bush win the primary and the nomination. McCain's supporters have never forgiven the Bush team.

McCain said that's all in the past to him, but he's speaking out against the anti-Kerry ad because "it reopens all the old wounds of the Vietnam War, which I spent the last 35 years trying to heal."

"I deplore this kind of politics," McCain said. "I think the ad is dishonest and dishonorable. As it is, none of these individuals served on the boat (Kerry) commanded. Many of his crew have testified to his courage under fire. I think John Kerry served honorably in Vietnam. I think George Bush served honorably in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War."

McCain himself spent more than five years in a Vietnam prisoner of war camp. A bona fide war hero, McCain, like Kerry, used his war record as the foundation of his presidential campaign.

The Kerry campaign has denounced the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, saying none of the men in the ad served on the boat that Kerry commanded. Three veterans on Kerry's boat that day -- Jim Rassmann, who says Kerry saved his life, Gene Thorson and Del Sandusky, the driver on Kerry's boat, said the group was lying on all fronts.

They say Kerry was injured, and Rassmann called the group's account "pure fabrication."

The leader of the group, retired Adm. Roy Hoffmann, said none of the 13 veterans in the commercial served on Kerry's boat but rather were in other swiftboats within 50 yards of Kerry's. The group claims that there was no gunfire on the day Kerry pulled Rassmann from a muddy river in the Mekong Delta and that Kerry's arm was not wounded, as he has claimed.

"What we have is a fabrication that led to Kerry getting his Bronze Star and his last Purple Heart," said Thurlow, who said he commanded a swiftboat near Kerry's.

As I said, I love McCain. Speaks his damn mind. Also, I hate the negative ads on both sides. I think political ads in general are honestly bunk. I've said this a few times and it still holds true: You shouldn't choose whether you like Coke or Pepsi based on ads (I like Coke and Diet Pepsi! i am a flip-flopper) A political candidate is a far more serious matter.

Fuck, I'm sick as a dog.

"when the chips were down, you could not count on Kerry" !?!

I don't get it, his crew seems to think he was a hero and the one guy holds Kerry responsible for saving his life when he fell off the boat, but I guess that doesn't qualify as the "chips being down"

This ad is just stupid. I feel sorry for people that would actually watch it and give it a second thought.

I also don't understand the whole "lied to get his purple heart & bronze star" I mean even if he tried to, what commander in their right mind would just hand them over.......

Kerry: "umm, even though I wasn't wounded, can I have a purple heart anyway, I heard the look great on a resume"?

Commander:"Oh, well, normally, this would be unethical and totally against protocol, but I just can't resist your charm sir, so in addition to this purple heart, how about a free bronze star to'boot"

Please....

It would be really interesting to hear about the smears that go on today, like the memo saying' Dean says he's Christian, yet he married a JEWISH woman'.

BTW that was, I believe, sent to Dems from the Kerry campaign.

The worst might be O'Reilly saying that Dean wanted teens to get abortions without telling their parents, and espoused it. When Dean said He was in favor of the right, since a girl had come to him, personally, and had been raped by her father, and was now pregnant.

There's a story on CNN.com(and I'd imagine other mainstream new sources) that have the headline, "Kerry Criticizes Bush's reaction to american under attack" which is horrible spin, because Kerry never criticized Bush's response, he was just simply asked what he would do in the same situation, but since he didn't say, "Umm I would do exactly what George Bush did" I guess that translates into criticism........

Come on Liberal media, you aren't holding up your end of the bargain

that is one thing I can't stand about the religious right and/or the moral authoritarians, they act azif the Left is encouraging young girls and women to run out and have abortions or something. Like there is some collective effort by liberals to do this. It is just silly.

So after this latest little controversy, can we please just have both parties agree to not bring up issues of John Kerry's Vietnam service OR issues of Bush's National Guard service?

It's ridiculous that roughly three months left to go and we're STILL talking about this shit.

I'm tired of Vietnam Vets For Truth, Vietnam Vets Against Kerry, Vietnam Vets For Bran Muffins, and all these similar right-wing attack groups who want to talk about what Kerry did 25 years ago instead of the past few years.

I actually tuned into O'Reilly tonight and saw him attack this ad, too. Dick Morris wondered how they magically raised $500K out of nowhere for this commercial and hinted at GOP involvement. While I don't think O'Reilly ran the segment for any reason other than he's planning to do a "OMG someone is attacking us as a right-wing network DESTROY DESTROY" piece later on in the program, it was refreshing to see nonetheless.

I'll agree with Vyce. Let's stop talking about shit that happened decades ago.

I respectfully disagree... Bill Clinton dodged the draft and went to England. I didnt give a shit then, and I dont give a shit now if Bush dodged the draft by going into the national guard, or if John Kerry saved 5,000 soldiers and rescued a kitten from a tree immediatly thereafter...

In the end, it doesn't really matter... it's what they do now that will decide the election

All right, I have to ask: Kerry's purple hearts have come under question, and basically he's been accused of being awarded them under dubious circumstances. Can someone explain to me how someone is able to manipulate his superiors into giving him a wartime medal if he doesn't deserve it? Did he walk up to them and tell them "I'm going to be a Senator and the President someday so you better give me that medal" ?

No, he just hid away so he wouldn't have to do anything. How appropriate for a draft dodger, eh?

j/k, but your comparison lacks any sort of insight into how this issue is important. I'm sorry, but Bush Sr. service in World War II didn't do shit for his CnC status for Desert Storm. And we still had other situations around the world like Somalia to deal with. To believe that being a tactical officer somehow will prepares you to be Commander in Chief is horribly mistaken. In no way does a single tour as a Lieutenant POSSIBLY prepare you in any way to be CnC, or hell, even for upper echleon military duty. Kerry's service is nice (Though after reading how he earned his Bronze Star, I almost want to call him a 'fucking cowboy' even more than I would call Bush one <_< ), but it hardly qualifies him for ANYTHING. Hell, even McCain's service (Which is much more of a fucking trial than anything Kerry did), isn't worth much in terms of experience outside of character, and even then it might not be even noticable (In Kerry's case, it just seems like a footnote).

Overall, I don't fucking care. I didn't care that Clinton was a draft-dodger, I didn't care that Kerry served, I didn't care that Bush was in the National Guard. It's all fucking moot.

Ummm, I'm not trying to be confrontational, but is it considered "Dodging" if you are invited to be a Rhode Scholar at Oxford? I mean, personally, given the choice, I'd pick Oxford over Vietnam, and not consider it dodging the draft, I wouldn't believe anyone here if they said they would pick to go to Vietnam over Oxford. Not that anyone here would ever get invited there.

but, yeah, that seemes a bit flawed, to say he "dodged" the draft, like he did something wrong or illegal by going to college.

Um, he wasn't at Rhodes the entire time. It's fairly well established he used connections to get waivers that he did not actually warrant.

Fortunately Kerry's military service in Vietnam and Bush's time in the National guard are sort of dead issues to me. I am not basing my choice on either's background, but I will give credit to Kerry for being in combat, with how much he contributed or not, or if he suffered scrapes and bruises. He still saw combat, which is more than I could say. But I do agree that he should tone down that part of his life and focus on the present. Now if he wants to relate a situation to his time spent, then that is ok. Just announcing it gets real old, real quick. They really need to open his brain compartment and reprogram him some more.

As for the draft dodgers, heck they came from all sides of the spectrum. Clinton dodged by going to Europe. I believe Cheney also dodged by finding loopholes as well. So the dodgers weren't just Republican nor Democrat. I do know if I was drafted, I would go, but as many were able to do, I would first go to college, which put off getting drafted while you atteneded school. I believe that many used these means to avoid conflict, as it was the recruits who could not get into college, who had enlisted, that were the onese who put their lives in the military's hand. At least Kerry enlisted after he was done with college, so he did want to fight for his country. And I am sure there were many others like him. My Dad went to West Point and then was sent to Nam to help build bridges, and did not see any danger thankfully. But many others did not choose this path, and really have no right to criticize one man's combat experience. But I still wish we didn't have to hear about it.

As for Bush's time in the National Guard. I won't mention any of the controversy, as the records show he had dental work, and he was honoroubly discharged. But I will say that the only thing I wish Bush would not do (I got this thought from Bill Maher) is to compare his time as a National Guardsmen to the current Guardsmen, who have been sent to Iraq to see combat. Back in Bush's day, I believe that 3% of all Guardsmen were sent over to fight in Vietnam. So the Guard was a way to serve your country, but more than likely not see any conflict, unless it was at Kent State. So that would be my only complaint in regards to his service. I just feel that Bush sometimes acts like his time spent was just like the current Guard, and that is just not true as more Guardsmen have been sent to Iraq. Also, I remember that Dan Quayle also created controversy in 1988 over his time served in the National Guard, which many saw him as using to avoid being sent into Nam.

And last but not least, I don't like negative ads. Most of the time they will twist facts around to make the person the bad guy and vice versa. Sure some are way over the top and border on the comical side. But it is sad when many will base who they vote for on these ads, instead of doing some research into the platform of the candidates. I will look at each candidates platforms, watch the debates, and look at the records of each. And of course I will try to determine which one will be the best choice for America. And fortunately I do not base my choice on speaking ability too much, especially with this year's candidates both not being the best speakers, but boy is SNL going to have field day here.

I am not suprised by McCain criticizing the negative ads. Sure he is campaigning for Bush, but I do feel McCain and Kerry have grown a mutual respect for one another over the years. And maybe he had a little deja vu back to 2000. So he saw something he disagreed with and made it know, regardless of being a Democrat and Republican. And yes, if there is a Kerry attack ad on Bush, I would hope that a Democrat would also criticize it. But you never know, sometimes the left can be hipocrytical, but so does the right. I agree with McCain here. He is his own man and even though he is Republican, he will cross partisan lines if he comes across something he believes in. And for all of you who are ready to bash McCain for whatever reason, how about we propose a politician trade. The Republicans get Zell Miller and the Democrats get McCain, who if he disagrees with this trade, he may choose to become an independent. And that way I wouldn't have to listen to Miller complain about the Democrats, and not feel that he is back stabbing each and every one of them. And as a bonus, Byrd of West Virginia will be force to where his old KKK uniform and forced to spend the day in Harlem. Just so that he has to retire after having his mind was jogged and beat up, along with a sudden heart attack to the unexpected race for hislife, and I know longer have to hear his past KKK membership get brought up. And anyone who would join the KKK is worthless, but I guess that makes no difference to West Virginia, which Deliverance was based on and where Inbred jokes are based on fact, so this may explain a whole lot. And yes people can change, and that we all have made mistakes, but the KKK?? I mean I couldn't stand David Duke and his supposed retirement, and I feel that way about Byrd. (Note I am totally kidding about West Virginia and the inbreed thing. I was trying to find a logical reason to why a former KKK memember could show enough people that he was a change man. I know that I would have a hard time voting for a candidate with that in his past. But of course in California we elected Ahnold so I guess wierder things can and do happen.)

Was the ad dumb? Yup. Pointless to the extreme.

Should the vets have done it? Nope.

Did Bush smear McCain? Nope. Just like the "disenfranchisement of black voters in Florida", it is simple a smear on Bush with no actual basis in fact that has been repeated, ad nauseum, by his critics.

Meanwhile, one of the people writing "Unfit for Command" is Jerome Corsi.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200408060010

While much has been written about the identity and history of John E. O'Neill -- one of the authors of the forthcoming Regnery book Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry (whose links in the GOP go back to his days as "protégé of Nixon-era dirty trickster Charles Colson") -- little has been said about his co-author, Jerome R. Corsi, PhD.

(..)

Corsi is also a frequent participant in FreeRepublic.com's online forums, posting under the pseudonym "jrlc" since 2001. (Click here to read a full set of Corsi's posts; click here to read the post in which "jrlc" admits to being Jerome Corsi.)

On FreeRepublic.com, Corsi has, among other things, said that "ragheads" are "boy buggers"; referred to "John F*ing Kerry"; called Senator Hillary Clinton a "Fat Hog"; referred to her daughter as "Chubby Chelsie" Clinton; referred to Janet Reno as "Janet Rhino"; called Katie Couric "Little Katie Communist"; suggested Kerry was "practicing Judaism"; and expressed the wish that a small plane that had crashed into a building in Los Angeles had instead crashed into the set of NBC'S The West Wing, thereby killing actor Martin Sheen.

Following are some examples. [spelling and punctuation are Corsi's own.]

On Catholics and the Pope

CORSI: Maybe while he's there he can tell the UN what he's going to do about the sexual crimes committed by "priests" in his "Church" during his tenure. Or, maybe that's the connection -- boy buggering in both Islam and Catholicism is okay with the Pope as long as it isn't reported by the liberal press. (03/03/2003)

CORSI: So this is what the last days of the Catholic Church are going to look like. Buggering boys undermines the moral base and the laywers rip the gold off the Vatican altars. We may get one more Pope, when this senile one dies, but that's probably about it. (12/16/2002)

On Islam and Arabs

CORSI: Let's see exactly why it isn't the case that Islam is a worthless, dangerous Satanic religion? Where's the proof to the contrary? (04/24/2004)

CORSI: Islam is like a virus -- it affects the mind -- maybe even better as an analogy -- it is a cancer that destroys the body it infects... No doctor would hesitate to eliminate cancer cells from the body. (11/26/02)

CORSI: Islam is a peaceful religion as long as the women are beaten, the boys buggered, and the infidels killed. (11/22/2002)

CORSI: How's this as an analogy -- the Koran is simply the "software" for producing deviant cancer cell political behavior and violence in human beings. (02/15/2002)

CORSI: Think the liberal press will ever let out that these 2 were lovers -- typical Islamic boy-buggering -- older man, younger man -- black Muslims? I doubt it. Not a pretty picture, but one certain to be hidden by PC media. (11/08/2002)

CORSI: Isn't the Democratic Party the official SODOMIZER PROTECTION ASSOCIATION of AMERICA -- oh, I forgot, it was just an accident that Clintoon's first act in office was to promote "gays in the military." RAGHEADS are Boy-Bumpers as clearly as they are Women-Haters -- it all goes together. (11/18/2001)

On Senator John Kerry

CORSI: First let's undermine the US in Vietnam. Then we can go for gay marriage. When you get to be Pres. JFK-lite, there will be no end to how much of America we can destroy. (05/17/2004)

CORSI: Just don't let anybody put a tablet with the Ten Commandments in front of the school where that girl wants to wear a Muslim scarf -- OH, No --- then the RATS would complain. Anti-Christian, Anti-American -- just like their Presidential Candidate -- Jean Francois Kerrie. (03/31/2004)

CORSI: After he married TerRAHsa, didn't John Kerry begin practicing Judiasm? He also has paternal gradparents that were Jewish. What religion is John Kerry? (03/04/2004)

CORSI: Kerry has a long history of Communist supporters. (03/12/2004)

CORSI: Kerry offers a clear choice. Anti-American hatred. (02/08/2004)

CORSI: John F*ing Commie Kerry and Commie Ted [Kennedy] discuss their plan to hand America over to our nation's enemies. (02/04/2004)

On former President Bill Clinton

CORSI: When is this guy going to admit he's simply an anti-American communist? Won't he and his leftist wife simply go away???? Enough already. (02/24/2002)

CORSI: Hey, Bill, didn't you steal enough when you had the chance? (02/15/2002)

CORSI: Clinton doesn't get it. Afganistan, and other Moslim countries, are not poor because they lack money. The culture itself is anti-modern. But then, maybe Slick did get it and he just wants to create another bork barrel from which he and his wife can draw slop. (02/15/2002)

CORSI: Clinton was more interested in gays in the military than going after OBL. Clinton had Janet Rhino pushing the FBI to deport a child to Castro's nondemocratic Cuba, not searching out OBL sleepers in the USA. Clinton was too busy getting BJs in the Oval Office to do more than Wag the Dog after the Cole was hit. (05/16/2002)

On Senator Hillary Clinton

CORSI: HELL-ary loves the Arabs so much (kiss, kiss Mrs. Arab*RAT) -- wonder how she would look in a Burkha? (05/21/2002)

CORSI: Mullah Ali'Gore-ah is very proud of his new Bin Laden beard and he hopes others in the Democratic Party will follow his lead. Hell-ary is disappointed she cannot grow a beard, but her press secretary reminds us she can still enroll in flight school. (01/07/02)

CORSI: Let the FAT HOG run!!! [regarding a possible presidential bid] (08/30/2003)

CORSI: Hellary should resign and go away. What ever happened to the people she ran over with her car at Westchester Airport? Can't anybody sue this b*tch? (11/17/2002)

CORSI: Anybody ask why HELLary couldn't keep BJ Bill satisfied? Not lesbo or anything, is she? (06/08/2003)

On Chelsea Clinton

CORSI: According to Talk Magazine, Chubby Chelsea had a very great adventure on 9/11 in NYC and Hell-ary had the details wrong -- oh, it was terrible. (12/07/2001)

CORSI: Did the Journalist see Chubbie Chelsea among the wives. Little Katie Communist [Katie Couric] on the NBC Today show interviewed Hillary this morning and mom is worried sick about Chelsea. She was last seen in Kandahar at a Starbucks. But now, as Little Katie Communist sighed, "Who Knows?" Even British disinformation planted reports such as this grocery crap will be useful. Anyone with information about Chubbie Chelsea's whereabouts should post it now. Mom wants to know her daughter is out of harms way. Mom also wants to be at the center of the story. (11/29/2001)

CORSI: But the real question is: WHERE IS CHUBBIE CHELSEA? Is she in Kabul in danger, looking for a Starbucks? Waldo wants to know. Please, Little Katie Communist, HELP US FIND CHELSEA. THE SITUATION MAY BE URGENT. (11/29/2001)

CORSI: HILLARY SAYS CHELSEA IS MISSING AND JANET RHINO DOESN'T KNOW WHERE SHE IS? (11/28/2001)

On former Vice President Al Gore

CORSI: Gore isn't available for television. He is growing his regulation length Bin Laden beard. Mullah Ali'Gore-ah, as he now wishes to be called, is focused on his new career as a pilot. "Want to fly like bird," he says after his stint as a professor at Columbia. "No need to learn take-off or landing, just soar like bird and look at buildings." As to Florida, Mulllah Gore-ah says, "No big buildings," dismissing the importance of the state to his future plans." (12/15/2001)

On the Media

CORSI: Time to FREEP Chris Matthews of MSNBC. MSNBC is beginning to stand for "More Sh*t, Nothing But Communism." (05/16/2002)

CORSI: I didn't realize Little Katie Communist of the NBC Today Show knew how to hack a website. Finally something impressive from the little wimp. [responding to news that USA Today's website had been hacked and that the hackers were mocking President George W. Bush's Christianity] (07/12/2002)

CORSI: COMMUNISM -- it's simple NBC = NOTHING BUT COMMUNISM. (04/19/2004)

CORSI: Susan Estrogen -- even the voice grates. But then with supporters like her and Ted Kennedy, who needs enemies. Let Susan BLAH BLAH screatch -- only Chrissy Matthews whines better. (04/13/2004)

Assorted

CORSI: Perfect Liberal -- lesbian, self-absorbed, hates America, anxious to impose her values on everybody else. [on Martina Navratilova] (06/26/2002)

CORSI: And now we get Pooh-LEFTY pushed on us by the RATS as Minority Leader in the House -- here come the SanFrancisco liberals -- hope the RATS go back to focusing the debate on gay marriages and other pro-choice topics close to Pelosi's heart. (11/18/2002)

CORSI: Too bad the plane didn't crash into the TV set of the NBC show "THE LEFT WING" -- especially when Martin Sheen was "acting." (06/07/2003)

Delightful.. :)

This is a war era...

BTW, we were at war as far back as 1993 --- when they struck WTC.

but, yeah, that seemes a bit flawed, to say he "dodged" the draft, like he did something wrong or illegal by going to college.

He vowed to join the ROTC to get a military officer help him get out of his initial draft selection. When he was re-drafted (thanks to that officer) and drew a lot that meant he'd likely not go to Vietnam, he decided that his vow to the officer wasn't important.

Clinton was HARDLY passive in his efforts to dodge the draft.

The group Bush was with was sent frequently until the military phased out the aircraft they used.

BTW, Rob, nice to see mediamatters.org is going after, you know, THE MEDIA --- and not pundits and the like. He's just like MRC.org --- except irrelevant.

Bill Clinton's Draft Letter

Read this, if you want to know Bill Clinton's View on Vietnam and the draft.

Of course, in the 1992 election, the Democratic Line was, "Service in Vietnam (military service, in general) should NOT be an issue in electing a President."

Freaking lying hypocritical bastards.
