I liked Vince McMahon as a commentator. 1...2...3 Oh he almost got him.

It's Gordon Solie not the way you spelled it.

The worst commentator every would be the Heroes of Wrestling commentator. He was horrible. I have the tape of it somewhere.

I could've sworn Jeremy Borash was the ring announcer for TNA PPV's and Mike Tenay & Don West were the PBP Men.

Tazz is actually one of the best PBP Men in the WWE, and Lawler & DeMott being off the worst list makes me vomit with rage.

No argument on Michael Cole. J.R. NOW sucks hard ass, but if it's a certain time period, can't argue. Styles sucked because all he did was make fun of other companies, yet wasn't THAT good himself. (I think Gertner was a lot better than him).

Did I mention Michael Cole sucks?

Well, I liked Tony Schiavone very much in the 80's NWA, Bob Caudle, Lord Alfred Hayes (get past the goof persona, I thought he was a good analyst) , Gordon Solie ,Joey Styles (before he just started screaming Oh my God constantly, Nick Bockwinkel when he would do color on the AWA shows, JR. Jesse Ventura, Mike Tenay, and Don West had grown on me.

Dislked David Crockett, Vince McMahon, Gorilla Monsoon (sorry I liked him as a host....hated his play by play), Lee Marshall, Cyrus ("tremendous, Joey Styles" was his significant contribution to the broadcast booth....liked him as a manager though) , Tony Sciavone in the 90's and beyond, the guy who used to do World Class (his name escapes me..not Mark Lowrance..the other one...Bill something I think) .

I'm on the fence with Bobby Heenan leaning towards the 'liked' side. Usually entertaining but sometimes just seemed to be there to spit out one liners.

Cole has improved by leaps and bounds in the past couple years, since he began working with Tazz. They work well together and he's now tolerable, at least when working with Tazz.

No offense, but this list is horrible. Dusty Rhodes is a complete abomination. On the Worst list, where's Todd Pettingill? Sean Mooney? Lita? Mongo McMichaels? David Crockett? Rob Bartlett?

Posted

I got to say Todd Grisham's work on The Benoit DVD would classify as some of the worst.

Best:

1. Jesse Ventura

2. Bobby Heenan

3. Gordon Solie

4. Jim Ross (Before 1999)

5. Paul Heyman

Runner Ups: Bob Caudle, Jerry Lawler (Before 2000), Joey Styles, Dusty Rhodes (Just for "Theirs a Lady in the Men's Bathroom"), CM Punk (Reminds me a lot of Ventura), Tazz, Vince McMahon (I liked him, he can bring excitement to the lamest of matches), Stevie Ray (Has the Dusty factor for saying the stupidest shit, and for being so bad he's entertaining), Mike Tenay, Jim Cornette

Worst:

1. Mongo

2. Lita

3. John House (The CZW heel commentator, he's awful and his voice is grating)

4. Lee Marshall

5. Ernest The Cat Miller

Runner Ups: (Aside from Corino and Punk, all of the ROH commentators), Todd Grisham, Todd Pettingill, Larry Zbyszko (Or however the hell you spell it), Michael Cole, Bill Demott, Face Coach, Schivonie past 95, Lawler from 2002 to now

The worst has to Kris Kloss from XPW. He was AWFUL. David Crockett has started to grow on me. I like him now. Surprised no body has said Jim Cornette or Paul Heyman as great announcers.Scott Hudson was also a good announcer. Another underrated announcer is Rick Stewart from NWA '86-87. I think he was in Central States before that.

To the Heyman Announcer Lover:

I'll agree with you on that. However, a friend of mine DESPISES Heyman's voice. His exact quote was:

"Every time I hear his voice, I want to rip my hair out." And the guy is bald, for crying out loud!

Jesse Ventura is the best without any doubt in my mind. Only heel commentator who never used his commentary to get himself(most heel commentators) or his comedy(Heenan) over at the expense of the match. No matter what the match Ventura would analyze and put over the people in the ring(instead of just dogging faces like Heenan was notorious for).

Don't get me wrong, Heenan was hilarious and possibly more entertaining than anyone but he, often, put his comedy over at the expense of the match going on. Jesse never did that.

Borash is the ring announcer in TNA, but he did play-by-play in WWA. I HATED VINCE MCMAHON WHEN HE DID PLAY BY PLAY IN WWF! God i hated it.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mark Madden for worst. Very occasionally, he had a redeeming joke*, but all in all he was terrible.

* Madden: Look at Coach Nash leading the Natural Born Thrillers. He's passing the torch to these guys.

Stevie Ray: What torch are you talkin' about, Madden?

Madden: The one you held for about 3 seconds.

My favourite announcer has always been Gorilla Monsoon, with Ventura and Heenan in joint second. The worst will forever be Sean Mooney. I hate this guy!

And about Mark Madden - from the very little footage of WCW i watched in 2000 I thought he was horrible. I think I remember Tank Abbot beating him up one time and being very happy about that B-)

Not when he took Madden's shirt off and we had to look at his boobies.

I don't know their names...nor do I understand the language, but the All-Japan announcers from the early-mid 90's were the best I've heard. The passion they put into their anouncing, and the excitement they add to the match, is great.

I love heel Coach.

Paul Heyman was GREAT, alot better then Jerry Lawler ever was IMO. Even when Lawler was in his prime at the booth.

Heyman did alot better job pissing of JR then Lawler ever did. It was hilarous. Survivor Series 2001 was a classic.

"Who?"

GOLD!

As for my choices:

Best

1. Bobby Heenan

2. Jesse Ventura

3. Paul Heyman

4. Joey Styles

5. Mike Tenay

Worst

1. Michael Cole

2. Steve McMichael

3. Todd Grisham

4. Shane McMahon

5. Art Donovan

Posted

Ah, I was just gonna mention Donovan. I still cringe every-time I watch KOTR '94 because the guy was either not prepped or didn't listen to any prep. Clueless. And I agree with House's nomination. I usually watch CZW shows on mute because his voice really is that annoying.

On the flip-side, I always like Schiavone up until mid-90s when he stopped giving a damn. Tony and Jesse always made a good team, as did Tony and Bobby.

Posted

I don't think you can fairly judge the all All Japan guys, they could be no better than JR for all you know. The translation could be

"Damn you Kawada! Damn your black soul straight to hell!"

Although I like the ring announcer way overdoing the names. CATOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS JAAAAAAAAAAACKAAAAAAAAOHHHH!

I'm the same but on the flip side it's Cornette's voice that makes me want to rip my hair out!

Since he usually has something interesting to say I have to stick to the transcripts of his interviews :D

What the hell is wrong with Jim Ross? I mean that in a nice way.

At SummerSlam last night, whenever the camera was off him he'd rock back and forth with his head bobbing while (I'd assume) commentating. I've heard he does this all the time. Is this something related to his medical condition? It's kind of freaky.

Solie, Young J.R. , and Heenan are the best. I think Josh Matthews is the worst I've heard.

Posted

I really like Matthews when he isn't trying to hard to be funny, the kid knows his shit.

Tazz is awesome when he's not in "heel because they said so" mood.

J.R. and the King make me hate myself.

John Watanabe and Geller who did the FMW dvd commentary are the worst ever. I don't know what is worse the stupid made up storylines that Geller made (W*ng Kanemura as a clown & Mike Awesome as an AWOL Marine) or Watanabe repeating himself while calling moves (Awesome bomb, Awesome bomb, Awesome bomb). And who can forget the damn goofy faces that Watanabe did before every match.
