Promoter Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Internally, there seemed to be the feeling that the crowd came to see crazy spots and were unhappy when the style was toned down. At least that's how the company seems to have interpreted last night. Yeah, I understand how the wwe can think that It's the same brass that thought this week's ratings didn't make sense. It might not be the fans booing the characters they thought sucked or were stale and cheering who they wanted to. BTW, there was a scant benoit sucks chant, yet the internet makes it seem like it was half the arena. The crowd was mixed and I still say if it wasn't Benoit in there Orton would have been the clear face. I would have loved to see the wwe make this logic during Austin's rise to the top. He's a bad guy they are suppose to boo. It's the fans fault. I still think this thing is getting way too much attention than warranted. Let's see how the crowd reacts tonight and when they go back to the States to see if Torono spawned an evil seed upon wrestling fans like the WHAT chant.
Dark Age Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Eugene has been more of a focus than Benoit. Therefore, Eugene be ahead of Benoit in the pecking order. Raw: Eugene main events against Triple H, Benoit comes out, gets beaten down Raw: Eugene is all over the show Raw: Eugene main events, and the focus is on him Vengeance: Last show of Eugene and Trips Raw: Eugene gets beaten down (Benoit is nowhere to be see) Raw: Eugene isn't there Raw: Eugene costs H the title, Benoit is an after thought Raw: No Eugene Raw: Eugene beats up Evolution, Benoit is layed out I'd say he's more important than Benoit. Also missing when he faced Kane, and when he teamed with Benoit against Coach and Cade. The fact is, Eugene has been positioned as the number one face on Raw.
Jobber of the Week Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 It's no coincidence that they booed the face in nearly every match Jericho didn't get booed. Eddie didn't get booed. Undertaker didn't get booed but the match turned into eventual silence as it dragged on too long. You guys have been making it sound like they were shouting This Match Sucks in the main event. - faces that every other arena across the world had no problem cheering. Wow. Congratulations, slack-jawed locals in Bumfuck, Alabama or whatever other generic red state will accept whatever slop is thrown at them by Vince.
Dark Age Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I just don't get it. Are we supposed to cheer all faces and boo all heels just because? I hate Eugene, am I not allowed to boo him? I like Angle, can I not cheer him?
Jobber of the Week Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 No. The focus of the shows is on Eugene. Eugene = Number 1 face. Don't kid yourself. The focus of the show is HHH. HHH=#1 heel. Feuding with HHH does not make you the #1 face on RAW. The focus of HHH's match with Benoit wasn't Benoit, or even HHH, but what Eugene was going to do and the whole "master plan" bit. The big photo the day after Vengeance was Eugene accidentally hitting HHH in the head with a chair. TELL ME again how the focus was about HHH or Benoit and not about Eugene? I'm also going to mention that heels won everything that mattered last night. Kane beat Hardy, Edge (who's been acting an ass for weeks) won his match, JBL beat Taker, Angle beat Eddie, HHH beat Eugene, and Orton beat Benoit. If you had a crowd that reacted to this "normally", it would have been a serious downer of a show. Again, this is BAD BOOKING, and it's good that they're being taken to task for it.
bobobrazil1984 Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 why should they cheer Eugene? because he's dumb enough to get manipulated like a moron for months on end by HHH? That manipulation should have lasted 2-3 weeks tops, then Regal returns, appeals to Eugene, and Eugene chooses Regal over HHH. crowd pops. hhh fumes, he's a loveable face again.
Guest Staravenger Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I'm amazed this is still going. Anyway, I re-watched the PPV today, and outside of UT/JBL, it really wasn't TOO annoying. Still, try thinking from a different point of view. Would you go to something like a play, and boo the actors and do a wave? Or go to a ballet and start a boring chant? How bout going to an opera, or maybe a symphony? Will you boo if you don't like it? NO because it's disrespectful to the performers on stage. WWE Wrestling is NOT a real sport. They are performers, just like any actors, musicians or dancers. Now that I think of it, I think it WOULD be entertaining though if a crowd went crazy on one of those shitty elementary school plays.
Promoter Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Well, to those who say Toronto doesn't respect the wwe how many cities give the wwe front page news and weekly columns in their mainstream media? How about having wrestling hotlines from the sports department from one of the top newspaper cicrulations in the nation? I still want to refer to this thread(along with others with this content) and its comments for when people complain about certain stuff. Just reverse all the complaints on us smarks every week. I also think this thing is being overblown. I suppose some have never heard about Nights at the Apollo where fans boo and cheer the best acts and the worst acts get the hook. It does happen in other forms of entertainment and it does happen in sports. So, why shouldn't it happen in SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT?

I was just trying to look at it from a different POV.

Booing isn't allowed at wrestling now because it's not a real sport and wrestlers are just like actors?
Guest Staravenger Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 They are performers. Is it that hard of a concept to grasp?
dubq Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 They are performers. Is it that hard of a concept to grasp? When it's wrestling, yes. So, I guess this goes against WWE's old attitude era of being proud that their fans boo and cheer what they want? Shades of grey and all that? Or are you one of these casual fans turned smarks who's only been watching for two-four years? If you honestly think it's disrespectful to boo at a wrestling event [REGARDLESS OF WHY YOU'RE BOOING] then you're more of an idiot than I first thought you were.
Kaertos Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Would you go to a baseball game and boo the home team if they were playing like ass? Honestly? No, not unless they were obviously dogging it and not trying to play well at all. If they are busting ass, paying hard but just getting their asses handed to them, I would not, and do not, boo them.
RavishingRickRudo Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 The funny thing here is that it's a JBL match getting the wave treatment. Infact, I don't think the crowd was doing the wave at all; I think they were all giving Nazi Salutes.

Guest whitemilesdavis Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Every other time (other than Rock/Hogan) that we've talked about a crazy crowd on here, I've found it to be highly exagerated. I really hope when I finally see this, it's as bad as you say. The wave during JBL - Taker? That's hilarious. I would join in if I weren't in the bathroom during that match. I mean, seriously, a month ago we had Eddie Freaking Guerrero for a champ, and now they are gonna throw JBL/Taker at us? NO way. The crowd had every right to keep themselves entertained during that garbage.

It's disrespectful to do a motherfucking WAVE During a god damn match. Try thinking at the point of view of a wrestler. Would you fucking appreciate it? Fuck no you wouldn't. If you don't understand THAT you are a bigger idiot than I thought you were.

If Taker wants to wrestle and be a leader, he should be putting people over. The match sucked, the crowd was entertaining themselves. Simple as that.

If you had one of the best teams ever in the sport, but your coach was making newbie mistakes left and right and bringing the game down because of it, would you complain, or would you just suddently drop all interest in the team and stop going to games? Exactly. Most people would prefer to just see a change.

Would you fucking appreciate it? Fuck no you wouldn't. If you don't understand THAT you are a bigger idiot than I thought you were. It's disrespectful to not entertain me during the show. The only bad part about the crowd entertaining themselves with the wave is that they had to entertain themselves. It's up to WWE to get the crowd into it, not up to the crowd to get WWE of their asses.
Mole Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 This hating Toronto crap is really starting to bug me. People are getting all heated over a crowd that was entertaining themselves because people in the ring weren't. I'll bet any amount of money everybody who is bitching would have also participated in the wave.
Kahran Ramsus Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 I don't remember any complaining when they did the wave during Dibiase/Roberts at Wrestlemania VI. Gorrilla & Jesse even found it enjoyable. Why should it be any different here?
NYU Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Dibiase/Roberts wasn't a WWE Championship match. And besides, the crowd at WrestleMania VI didn't prove themselves to be as frustratingly moronic as the crowd at SummerSlam. If the wave had been an isolated incident last Sunday, then I doubt there'd be the outcry there is right now. But the Toronto crowd was dreadful all night, and now they're getting called out on it.
bob_barron Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 People make tons of points dissecting your arguments and that's all you come back with? Damn. Dibiase/Roberts wasn't a WWE Championship match. What's your point? Taker v. Bradshaw was a poorly booked rushed feud that had two people fighting that the crowd DID NOT want to see. So they decided to amuse themselves. And did the wave. You're still not making a lick of sense. Was the crowd 'dreadful' during the 6-man or Kane v. Hardy? And they were hot during the 3-way- they just cheered one face over the other. (Well according to you every face got booed- but whatever) Were they were dreadful during Angle v. Eddy? They seemed pretty into it. Should Toronto have cheered Eugene because they were told to? The crowd didn't like him so they booed him. Should they just go along with what Vince says and cheer who he says to cheer? And they're getting called out on it by idiots who don't seem to like the fact that a bunch of fans at a wrestling show they PAID to see decided to have fun when the product they paid to see was not providing it.

This isn't the German Philharmonic Orchestra we're talking about, this is WWE. The same company that gave us Katie Vic, Mae Young, and Beaver Cleavage. Not only do they accept rowdy behaviour from their audience, they encourage it. I hardly think doing the wave is an appauling act. What about Diva Dodgeball coming between two championship matches? Is that respectful?
