WWF/E Theme Songs

I've always been a big fan of the WWF/E theme songs, whether they were done by Jimmy Johnson or if they were done by another band. That got me thinking about the themes they've had for the PPV's.

I'm not sure on the exact date when they started using themes (late 2001, early 2002 is my guess) but I always thought they made for a intresting PPV, be it the theme of the PPV or for a spiffy looking music video that portrays the events that took place. Where there were some themes that are just amazing, some just make me shake my head in disbelief and of course, there's the completely bland theme. Of course, the themes that do appear as a WWE PPV theme are usually given good amounts of radio time in the near future (such as Always by Saliva and Bring Me to Life by Evanessence).

So my questions to all of you is this: does a theme make or break a PPV? Does it matter to have a theme or is it a waste of time?

Technically they've had themes all the way back to the old WrestleMania and Survivor Series songs.

And no, a theme doesn't matter to a show as long as there's not a live performance or something. And even if there is, a good show can survive a shitty performance. Much like where WM19 wound up being a good show despite all the Limp Bizkit and Catfight Girl shit.

Theme songs are important, IMO. Because of "Price To Play" for example, I'll always remember how great of a PPV Vengeance was minus the McMahon matches. :)

I did like "My Way" for WrestleMania X7. It just fit perfectly. So maybe they do, in a small way influence your view on a PPV, but WrestleMania X7 was a great PPV.

The theme songs are nothing more than a marketing tool to promote new albums, nothing more. It appears the only criteria WWE uses when picking the songs is that they

1) come from new albums by big-name established artists

or

2) are new bands' first singles that will be pushed heavily by labels/radio.

In that sense, it's not really a conscious search for a 'great' song that 'fits' the show; it's a way to get extra $ for shilling for popular rock bands.

BTW, Saliva now is tied with Drowning Pool for performing the most PPV theme songs with 4. (No Mercy 01, WMX8, SS02, and UF04.)

Rush's Summer Time Blues didnt get me excited for Summerslam at all. It didn't pump you up at all. It was just sort've annoying. Why'd they use that?

New album + Rush is famous + Rush is Canadian + 'summer' in the title.

I think the theme from last years SummerSlam with Metallica was MUCH better

I'd go crazy like a little bitch if they brought hte old school Royal Rumble theme anytime soon

For my money the best was "Fight" from SummerSlam 2002.

There were way better themes, such as superstar by Saliva for WM XVIII and Enemy by Sevendust (it was for a Raw PPV in 2003, can't remember whic one though)

Back in the day, the wrestlers' theme songs seemed to fit the performer perfectly. The song fit the wrestlers' character, theme, etc. Jim Johnson did a good job with aligning the wrestler with the song. Nowadays, however, all the songs seem like stock music the company just randomly gave to a performer. I hate it even more when they license songs and give them to a performer due to business reasons. (See HHH and "Beautiful Day". Ugh). Rarely does the licensed song fit the performer (Limp Bizkit's Rollin' for Taker, for example).

I always thought Rollin' suited him.. as he came " rollin' " down to the ring on a mortorcycle..

"Beautiful Day" suited HHH because he was just coming off of injury.. That was a beautiful day indeed.
