Downhome 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 I saw the movie and I just loved it. Some of the dialogue is poor, the acting is a bit odd, but in my opinion all of that was obviously done on purpose. This isn't a film that is meant to be this mind-blowing all new thing. This film was a mixture of a few things. One, which is new really, was the filming of quite a bit of it in front of a green screen, we all know about that though. The film was also, and more importantly in my opinion, a throwback to the wacky classic sci-fi films from the 50's and the such. If you are familiar with films like that, then you'll really enjoy this one in my opinion. It's a lighthearted, comedic, cheesy, throwback to old SCI-flicks, and I for one adored it. I'd reccomend it to just about anyone who loves film though, especially to those who are a fan of films like this one. This movie was trying to present a certain style and feel, and it hit the nail on the head. Add that to the overall visuals, and it was just a great watch. Sincerely, ...Downhome... starvenger 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Is it true that if I don't like this movie, I just don't like movies? That's what the clown from the Today Show says. Well, if it was said on the Today Show, then it MUST be true...
algrim 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 I thought it was a pretty good movie, but I felt there were some plot holes and other things that struck me as odd. Since I don't know how to post spoiler threads, I won't discuss them at this time.

starvenger 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 OK caught a matinee of it. I didn't think that this movie was great, but it was definitely enjoyable. It seemed like the writer/director was going for a serial-type feel, and it worked to an extent - the action scenes with the plane gave off that vibe, but once they were out of it, it was generic action-adventure all the way. Anyways, I was impressed with the way the actors were really into the movie, despite the whole thing being shot on soundstages with bluescreens. The enthusiasm and emotion that they showed really allowed you to immerse yourself into their world. I also liked the "look" of the movie. Aside from a few sequences (and you'll know them when you see them) it didn't really feel like a "bluescreen" movie. Again, this might also be attributed to the actors, but the backgrounds and cgi looked credible, too. Finally, was it me or was Jolie's character an homage to Nick Fury? Mik 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Wait, is it the real actors, or just really well done CGI of them? From the commercials, I thought it was all CGI but off of what I read, it sounds like real performances. What's the deal?
Downhome 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 It's real actors, but much of the acting was done in front of a screen.

DMann2003 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 I caught the film last night, and I thought it was incredibly fun and enjoyable. I agree with whoever said the main actors were having a blast, their giddy performances added to my enjoyment. I'd easily give the film a B+. Oh and the last line of the film "Lens cap", and the look on Gwenyth's face, classic

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 Lifted from another board, here's some of the many references in the movie.. One of the wrecks in the underwater sequence is the Venture, from King Kong. The log on the island is also straight out of Kong. A street sign reading 'Kings Row', from the classic Reagan film. The robot rays use the same sound as the Heat Ray from War of the Worlds. Polly's phone conversation with her editor has elements of the WotW Welles radio broadcast. The robot warehouse has a deactivated robot with a big #7 on it, just like the numbered robots in the Fleischer Superman cartoon. Someone elsewhere mentioned that Totenkopf's door had THX-1138 on it, I didn't notice this myself. The footage of Olivier seems to be from "Rebecca."
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2004 Sky Captain bombed... Less than $16 million on opening weekend. Catwoman did better than that on its opening weekend. Sure, that was in summer...but Resident Evil: Apocalypse did something like $23 million. Well, it wasn't great, but it's a bummer to see it do so poorly. Well, I suppose any chances of a sequel are firmly in the crapper.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2004 did they reshoot anything, because I remember seeing a trailer for this a long time ago, and then it just dissapeared, and then suddenly reappeared and was released.

I really enjoyed this movie and the pulp feel to it. Many of the robots reminded me of the ones from the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoon.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 I thought that the movie was doing pretty good? Damn, that disappoints me. I'm sure it will sell much better on DVD. It *is* doing well...as movies during this time go... It's "the number one movie in the country," but it's not grossing very much because not many people go to the movie theaters after Labor Day. It's like Without A Paddle being the "number one comedy in country" a while back, even though it's box office was pretty crappy. Labor Day weekend is usually when the biggest loads of crap are unloaded on the theaters (Paparazzi, for instance), and it takes a while for things to pick up to "normal" levels. So I think they picked the absolute worst time to release it.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 I noticed the Kings Row thing too but it seemed out of place since some of the other movies playing were Wizard of Oz and Wuthering Heights, which were both 1939. Kings Row wasn't until 1941. I enjoyed the movie but it wasn't as much like a 50s movie as it was a late 30s/early 40s type movie. The whole relationship with Law and Paltrow seemed like a His Girl Friday or Only Angels Have Wings deal (or any number of films from that period). Of course the whole tropical prehistoric stuff (and the log bridging the chasm) was a riff on Kong. Surprised no one else mentioned the Shangri La stuff. I sorta expected Ronald Colman to guide them or something, haha. The recreation of Olivier here makes me wonder why no one does a Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid type deal again, only with cooler new technology. Incorporate a bunch of classic stars into a new film. I guess that Universal (?) decided that they weren't likely to recoup the budget on Sky Captain, so they released it now, and if it makes it's money due to word of mouth, then it's gravy. Considering that the box office numbers you see a) are before theaters take half and b) don't include the marketing budget, it's very unlikely Sky Captain will make it back, at least until video sales. Although if it does fairly well in the end for its lousy release time, that may make them decide to greenlight a sequel and give it a better release time. I don't think that theatres even make half (most of their revenue comes from concessions) but yeah, I'm thinking that as well.
