Ex-MVP Caminiti dies of heart attack at 41

 

NEW YORK (AP) - Ken Caminiti, the 1996 National League MVP who later admitted using steroids during his major league career, died Sunday. He was 41.

 

Caminiti died of a heart attack in the Bronx, said his agent-lawyer Rick Licht. The city medical examiner's office said an autopsy would be performed Monday, spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.

It's sad, really, when I walk around Boston and see junkies of 20+ years outliving former professional athletes. Really, you could see it coming, but damn, you still don't think he'd be dead at 41. More evidence that this shit ain't worth it. Period.

Well when you add extended steroid use to cocaine, chances are it'll catch up to you sooner or later.

Yes. He went into rehab for it not too long ago, if I'm not mistaken.

 

But what a shock. It's not like I wouldn't peg him to be an early exit from life, but it's still fairly rare to hear of younger baseball players (retired and active) passing away. He was one of the guys I often cringed seeing when the Cubs played the Astros, just because he always seemed to do the most damage.

This still comes as a shock to me, even with the steriod and cocaine usage. I will still try to look past that and remember him with fond memories. He was my favorite player with the Padres in the 90s. I will remember the great plays he made at 3rd base or his clutch home runs, like the one he did in the 10th against the Braves in the NLCS. I always thought he would get cleaned up and take a job within the Padres organization. Even through all his troubles, I will miss him and remember the good parts about his life, not the bad.

Yes. For some reason I think it was right around Father's Day or his anniversary or something that just made the situation that much sadder.

Kile was only 33 at the time of his passing. The Astros were set to play the Chicago Cubs the next day, but the game was cancelled upon news of his passing.

 

Kile was honored just two days later with both the Cubs and Astros wearing his number on their jerseys for the game.

This just brings me back to high school. My English teacher, her name was Mrs. Caminiti. We asked her one day if she is related to Ken Caminiti, and she told us that's one of her cousins, but she hated talking about him for some reason....

This was my confusion. I was tired and was reading the Ken story about the same time as the Kile story.

Anyway, knowing Caminiti was a known steroid user, I can't say I'm shocked by the way he passed away or how early passed away. Still sucks to hear of his passing though.
