Rob E Dangerously Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3068808 Ex-MVP Caminiti dies of heart attack at 41 NEW YORK (AP) - Ken Caminiti, the 1996 National League MVP who later admitted using steroids during his major league career, died Sunday. He was 41. Caminiti died of a heart attack in the Bronx, said his agent-lawyer Rick Licht. The city medical examiner's office said an autopsy would be performed Monday, spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.
Guest Anglesault Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 The sad thing is that you could kind of see it coming, but weren't prepared for it when it happened.
snuffbox Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Damn Rob, your really bringing the good news tonight.
Vern Gagne Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Too bad for his family and friends.
Guest Wildbomb 4:20 Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 It's sad, really, when I walk around Boston and see junkies of 20+ years outliving former professional athletes. Really, you could see it coming, but damn, you still don't think he'd be dead at 41. More evidence that this shit ain't worth it. Period. --Ryan ...painfully stating the obvious since 2003...
Vern Gagne Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I have a feeling more than steroid use contributed to the heart attack.
Downhome Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I have a feeling more than steroid use contributed to the heart attack. To think otherwise would be blind. Wasn't he arrested in the past because of cocaine and other such things?
Guest Wildbomb 4:20 Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I'm sure some other fun substance was involved, but steroid use would be a foot in the wrong direction, so to speak. --Ryan
Downhome Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Well when you add extended steroid use to cocaine, chances are it'll catch up to you sooner or later. I will never understand why people are willing to gamble their lives in this way. I know why they do so, but I'll never understand it.
Bruiser Chong Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I have a feeling more than steroid use contributed to the heart attack. To think otherwise would be blind. Wasn't he arrested in the past because of cocaine and other such things? Yes. He went into rehab for it not too long ago, if I'm not mistaken. But what a shock. It's not like I wouldn't peg him to be an early exit from life, but it's still fairly rare to hear of younger baseball players (retired and active) passing away. He was one of the guys I often cringed seeing when the Cubs played the Astros, just because he always seemed to do the most damage.
snuffbox Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I dont even remember who the last MLB player to die this young was....
Downhome Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I remember it happening a while back, but the name escapes me. It was a fairly high profile player also, a pitcher I do believe.
Hektik Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 This still comes as a shock to me, even with the steriod and cocaine usage. I will still try to look past that and remember him with fond memories. He was my favorite player with the Padres in the 90s. I will remember the great plays he made at 3rd base or his clutch home runs, like the one he did in the 10th against the Braves in the NLCS. I always thought he would get cleaned up and take a job within the Padres organization. Even through all his troubles, I will miss him and remember the good parts about his life, not the bad.
Guest Anglesault Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I remember it happening a while back, but the name escapes me. It was a fairly high profile player also, a pitcher I do believe. Darryl Kile

For some reason I think it was right around Father's Day or his anniversary or something that just made the situation that much sadder.
2GOLD Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Daryl Kile died on June 22, 2002, in his hotel room of apparent heart attack. His father had died of a heart attack at just the age of 43. Kile was only 33 at the time of his passing. The Astros were set to play the Chicago Cubs the next day, but the game was cancelled upon news of his passing. Kile was honored just two days later with both the Cubs and Astros wearing his number on their jerseys for the game.
Downhome Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Thanks AS. I can't believe I forgot the name Darryl Kile.
Eclipse Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 This just brings me back to high school. My English teacher, her name was Mrs. Caminiti. We asked her one day if she is related to Ken Caminiti, and she told us that's one of her cousins, but she hated talking about him for some reason....

I believe you might be thinking about the death of Jack Buck, who died just four days earlier at the age of 77. It was back to back blows to the Cardinals family.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 He was one of my favorite players when he was alive, but his choices brought about his downfall. Hope your glory days were worth passing away early, Ken...

Kile played for the Cardinals at the time of his death, though he did play for Houston (and Colorado) earlier in his career, so they probably honored him as well (don't remember if they did) As for Caminiti, his steroid confession wasn't much of a surprise to me, and neither was this
The Mandarin Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 NO~! Well, this sucks. He was one of my favourite players on Ken Griffey Jr.'s baseball for N64. RIP.

I was tired and was reading the Ken story about the same time as the Kile story.
Ced Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 Holy crap. I wake up and find The Rule of Threes breaking some sort of speed record. Anyway, knowing Caminiti was a known steroid user, I can't say I'm shocked by the way he passed away or how early passed away. Still sucks to hear of his passing though.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 I'm not at all surprised that he died of a heart atack, but the young age is what gets me. Steriods + cocaine= early exit Man, did Caminiti have a fucking GUN from 3rd base or what?
