Best Kubrick Movie?

Now, some of us haven't seen them all (I'm watching FMJ tomorrow), but I'm sure you can still give on opinion on which is the best film you've seen of his so far.

 

For me, I'm going with Shining over 2001 and Strangelove. CRAZY camerawork on Shining with extremely in-depth characters and of course, Scatman(~!). I thought more about this movie afterwards than 2001, and that's saying something. All three are great (and darkly humorous) in their own ways.

 

I think he could have made AI a classic, myself. I'll go out on a limb here and say Spielberg's version was great, but it could have been better.

Kubrick was kicked off Spartacus. Full Metal Jacket and The Shining are great, but are also two of his weaker films.

 

I haven't seen Barry Lyndon yet, but it's on my Tivo.

 

It's tough to choose between 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove and Lolita. I'd have to go with 2001, due to it's impact and importance.

Yeah, I got that but none of that seemed too special or anything I haven't seen before. Is there anything else I'm missing?

2001 and A Clockwork Orange were both quite good, and probably my favorites out of his films.

Kubrick was kicked off Spartacus.

No he wasn't. The director before Kubrick was, and then Kirk Douglas, having already worked with Kubrick on Paths Of Glory (that should be on this list, by the way), assigned Kubrick to do the film. He did most of it. And Kubrick more or less did all the cinematography too.

 

Anyway, my vote went to A Clockwork Orange. Narrowly beating 2001 and Strangelove.

Truth is I didn't think much of Clockwork when I saw it 5 or 6 years ago, but I've seen it a couple of times since and it's really grown on me.

 

And I think parts of 2001 are great, I love the story, but there are just too many "artsy" parts that just seemed to go on forever and bore me.

As much as I love everything Kubrick has ever done, I've gotta say A Clockwork Orange is my favorite because it had the most impact on me personally. When I saw it, it made me decide I want to be involved in the film business, and it's been my favorite movie ever since. Goddamn it's just so genius. One of the greatest characters ever in Alex de Large (Malcolm McDowell is so frickin' awesome it hurts), and a few of the greatest scenes, too.

 

I'm shocked at the lack of love for Paths of Glory. Every time I see it, I think it might be slightly better than Dr. Strangelove.

I've never seen Paths of Glory...and I think it's the same with most others. Everyone knows The Shinning and Full Metal Jacket though.

I never really considered Sparticus one of Kubrick's films because he never had full control of the direction of the film.............even though he IS the credited director.

I voted Full Metal Jacket because that's the most re-watchable for me. The other contenders aren't movies that I watch over & over, whereas I could watch FMJ on a weekly basis and not get tired of it.

 

The other contenders, for me, were 2001, Lolita & Clockwork Orange.

I do like A CLOCKWORK ORANGE however.

 

THE SHINING ia an interesting failure.

 

FULL METAL JACKET is watchable for the first half.

Strangelove over Clockwork because one of the best satires of all time beats out over-the-top ultraviolence and Cockney slang.

Yeah the slang in Clockwork wasn't cockney...It wasa mixture of a bunch of different stuff.

 

Of course since it was british actors, it all sounded like cockney.
