bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 SNL Review- Liam Neeson/Modest Mouse SNL Moment #16: 16. Can you say you’re sorry to Bill for being a douchebag? SNL’s decision to make Justin Timberlake host was met with a mixed reaction. Many people hated the decision, once again wailing about SNL catering to teenyboppers and the like. Others thought Justin would do pretty good and had a wait and see approach. The Justin Timberlake episode ended up blowing most SNL fans away. Hardball, a spoof of Punked and Timberlake’s hilarious Jessica Simpson impression had everyone rolling. Not even a weak Weekend Update could slow this episode down. But the episode truly hit its apex when Timberlake decided to duet with Kermit the Frog. THE MOMENT: Justin Timberlake comes out and talks about how his two favourite shows growing up were Saturday Night Live and the Muppets Show. He announces he wants to sing with Kermit the Frog and like magic- Kermit shows up. The crowd awwwws. Justin decides to sing The Rainbow Connection with Kermit. Justin sings the first verse as the crowd starts to chuckle. Kermit takes the second verse and the laughter increases. They trade verses back and forth until they hit the chorus. Justin and Kermit banter for a second and then Kermit makes a weird joke about them recording an album with P. Diddy. Justin has a weird look on his face for a second but they continue. They sing the second half of the song and Justin decides to go behind a brick wall and sing next to Kermit. Kermit screams and tells Justin to be careful since he stepped on his buddy’s leg. They go back to singing but again Justin gets to close to Kermit and he screams in pain again. “I’ve been telling you all week!” he screams and Justin looks a bit ticked off. Ever the pro, Justin goes back to singing the song. Kermit starts pushing him away as he sings and then outright shoves him (we see a human hand) and yells “Seriously- back off!” Justin now gets really pissed and starts kicking the hell out of the puppeteer. He causes the wall to fall down and we see Justin locking Will Forte in a headlock. Justin continues beating on Forte until the voice of reason, Kermit, speaks up. Justin realises the error of his ways and gets up. Kermit asks Will Forte (now named Bill) to apologise to Justin for shoving him and he does. Kermit then gives my favourite line of the skit: Can you say you’re sorry to Bill for being a douchebag? Justin denies douchebaggery but before he can finish his sentence Kermit starts singing the song again. Justin decides to finish the song but as they go for the big finish- he gets called a douchebag again. Justin’s had enough and as the skit ends and the audience applauds wildy, he beats the hell out of Bill again. Thus ends one of the most unique skits in SNL history. Tribute- Yasser Arafat: I could complain that his death wasn’t more painful or gory enough- but really nit-picking over the death of a terrorist is just nit-picking for the sake of nit-picking. Burn in hell you terrorist pigfucker. Wish List- My birthday is coming up on Wednesday and if you really want to show me how cool you are- you’ll buy me something. At least I hope you will. http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/registry...d=3KQ1O3J0CCIYY Sports Report- Saints: I think it’s become quite clear that Jim Haslett has to go. How did they decide to shape up the Saints team so they wouldn’t choke like bitches? They banned the playing of rap music. Oooo scary. Aaron Brooks also has got to go. Every week I question why I root for this team. Nets: They’re off to a slow start but that’s because the team thought acquiring Eric Williams, Ron Mercer and Jacques Vaughn was a good idea and they lack depth on the bench. There are some bright spots like guard Zoran Planinic. R-Jeff has done an admirable job in the leadership role. And if Alonzo Mourning got nailed in the kidneys- I wouldn’t be too upset. Just saying. Mailbag!!!!!!!- Sam writes- Bob, I completely agree with you about Amy and Tina being on Update together. I just don't see how it's going to work they are to much like each other, you were right, they really should've replaced Jimmy with Seth. Also, I to was awaiting a Seth commentary and when there wasn't one in the Jude Law episode I got very angry. When the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years I was super happy for two reasons:1.)I'm a Red Sox fan and 2.)There would have to be a Seth commentary. When Seth came up in the little insert I was a little sad it wasn't going to be at the desk, but then Seth went to hang out with Johnny Damon(or Jesus as you like to call him.)I actually stopped breathing for a tiny bit out of my shock and extreme happiness. The only thing that disappointed me about it was that everyone else got more time for their commentary than Seth, and he had Johnny Damon!! I probably am only this angry because Johnny Damon is one of my favorite baseball players, but also because Seth does some awesome commentaries and he never gets to do them anymore. I know that he's probably going to be in a lot of sketches but I just wanted a Red Sox commentary in which Seth could finally talk about the Sox winning it all, but I didn't get that. It would've been some great if Seth made fun of the Yankees being up 3-0 and still losing to the Red Sox especially while Curt Schilling was bleeding through his sock, I mean that has to be something the Yankees are angry at themselves for, they couldn't even do well against a guy that was bleeding through his sock!! Oh and sorry about the Braves not beating the Astros a few weeks ago, I was cheering for them during that game. -Samantha Ballert Congrats on the Red Sox winning the World Series- I was very happy for them and all of their fans. Jesus showing up on SNL was awesome even though I was a little ticked that Seth didn’t get to do a full on Red Sox rant where as you said- he brought up Schilling, the A-Rod incident and the curse being broken. It was funny what they did with him, but still a missed opportunity for greatness. I’m glad people are starting to realise that Amy and Tina are quite bad. And thank you for your condolences on the Braves. If anyone wants Chris Retiesma’s phone number or address- I’ll email you. Victor Pellicier writes- What's your beef with Maya? I know she's not funny, but i've seen you knock her for being biracial and you say she's ugly. I don't get it, is she a bitch in real life? My beef with her is that she’s horrible and not funny. It’s also amusing when the show has her play white people when she’s not. Maya’s taken over for Chris Kattan as cast member I hate and mock the most. The fact that she’s not very attractive is just more fuel to the fire. I don’t really talk to Maya anymore but everytime I did she was pretty nice. Griffin Adkins writes- Hello Bob. My name is Griffin and I'm planning on taking a trip up to NY the weekend of the 13th to do stand-by for SNL. I plan on leaving here from Atlanta and getting to NY Thursday evening. From what I understand, I should get in line for standby sometime of mid to late morning on Friday to have the best shot at getting tickets. Then they give out tickets for either live or dress at 7AM on Saturday, right? Any advice or what not would be great. I want to have the best shot possible to getting in to see SNL and I figure you're the right person to ask since from what I've read, you've seen it several times. So just any info about the show and how that mess works and NY would be great. thanks a bunch. I always thought Griffin was a badass name. For standby you don’t really have to get there early anymore as people seem to be getting in at a very high rate. Getting there Friday afternoon is best if you want a real good number and I’m 99.9% sure you’ll get in. The cast comes out Friday night which is cool and then you just tough it out till 7 am. McDonalds steak and egg breakfast is awesome. Enjoy the line. Chad Ruffner writes- Hi Bob, A pretty "Blah" Pre-Survivors Series Show. This was especially disappointing coming off the heels of last week's program, which I thought was The best Raw of The Year so far. Things started off on a bad note with The Randy Orton vs Batista Punch, Kick, Rest Hold Fest, (WTF was the Idea giving those 2 20 Minutes?), and just didn't seem to recover from there. On The Bright Side, Edge Is coming along quite nicely as a Heel, and there should be enough Intrigue coming out of S.S. with The Winning Team gaining control of Raw for a Month. SHOULD BE. Knowing Creative, however, I'm sure they'll find a way to screw It up. What did you think? Chad I didn’t think the previous weeks show was the Best Raw of the Year- especially when you factor in the RAWs from Wrestlemania-Jericho v. Christian in a cage. Orton v. Batista was alright. I can understand giving them 20 since in the end it makes them better wrestlers. RAW was just an eh show but I like the Evolution getting their come-uppance angle. It’s been a long time coming and they’re handling it pretty well. Chase Sambori writes- Greetings Bob- There's actually 2 questions I have, neither are related in any way 1)What upcoming movies are you most looking forward to? 2) Recently on 60 minutes, Lorne was on the show and he was talking to Lesie Stall (I believe) and among things, he was saying that this day and age of political correctness, they would NEVER be allowed to do the "News for the hard of hearing" segment that was done on WU in the 70s. Lorne said himself that in the 70s, they thought it was fun and silly, not to be taken too seriously. My Question is, do you think that SNL not wanting to ruffle any feathers is harming them in creating truly great material? Bob, Thank You again -Chase Answer to #1- I’ll list movies that are coming out till January- 1) Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. I loved the first one and even though it’s getting poor reviews I really want to see Bridget, Darcy and Cleaver go at it one more time. Plus Renee looks damn good as Bridget. 2) Lemony Snickett: Jim Carrey is my favourite actor and the trailer looks really wicked. It looks like Carrey is having the time of his life there. I haven’t read the books although they sound really fun and creepy. Carrey’s already hit one out of the park with Eternal Sunshine. I can’t wait to see what he does here. 3) Meet the Fockers: I really liked the first one and I like the casting of Hoffman as his dad. I’m worried Streisand will be too annoying as the mom but Ben Stiller knows how to play this role in his sleep and Jay Roach is a great director so I see no reason why this won’t work again. 4) The Life Acquatic: The trailer looks a bit weird but I enjoyed the Royal Tenenabaums and it’s pretty much the same group of people as last time. Now to question two: There’s some stuff SNL obviously can’t do but I think they could probably pull off the Hard of Hearing. SNL’s been politically incorrect tons of times so I think Lorne could be saying that as an excuse for why they don’t push the envelope. I personally would love to see a lot more offensive and pushing the envelope type humour. Playing beat the censor is always fun. Wanna be in the mailbag???? Email me at [email protected] And now the review... Cold Opening Cast- Will Forte, Seth Meyers, Maya Rudolph, Darrell Hammond Thoughts- Well I guess Seth’s John Kerry deserved one nice send-off and this was it. I didn’t mind Will’s Bush and thought he did a very good job with it. The interplay between Kerry and Bush was really funny. I loved the line about just marrying Theresa for her marry and Forte’s line about “Well it worked in the Parent Trap” was awesome. And Darrell brought back Al Gore. Yay for that. Darrell’s Gore still works and he had some good lines as well. SNL’s political humour continues to be a big bright spot for the show as this was really funny. So long Seth’s Kerry- it was a fun ride. ***3/4 Monologue Cast- Liam Neeson, Horatio Sanz, Rudolph, Forte, Hammond, Fred Armisen, Finesse Mitchell, Jason Sudakis Thoughts- Whoa- Finesse Mitchell is still on the show?? I thought he had gone the way of the dodo bird, Dean Edwards and Tom Daschle’s Senate seat. Aside from the shocking revelation that Finesse is still on the show, I was also shocked to find out that Maya was biracial since that’s something I’ve never made fun of in my years of reviewing her work. I also marked out for Fred’s Indian’s character. That guy’s great. Neeson’s exchanges with Darrell and Horatio were pretty funny and I loved Will Forte’s joke about white Christian stereotypes. Pretty funny monologue and a lot better then last week’s debacle. ***1/4 Star Jones Cast- Neeson, Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Kenan Thompson, Mitchell, JB Smoove Thoughts- I understand they wanted to get Neeson into the show but you already have a guy who can do Sean Connery- and do it quite well I might add. Seeing JB Smoove is never a good sign that laughter is oncoming but at least he didn’t do his outdated bit on getting mugging. Kenan’s Star Jones was funny but I think any black man can put on a wig, pretend to be Star Jones and it’ll be funny. The bits with Finesse and Kenan were funny but I thought the skit dragged on too long. Maya’s Liza Minelli was alright and I did laugh at the Jazz Hands at the end. The bit with Rachel as Barbara just seemed like an attempt to get Neeson in the skit. I liked the ending with the reality show tease though. **3/4 You Call This a House Do Ya? Cast- Neeson, Meyers, Amy Poehler, Rob Riggle Thoughts- Gotta say- I wasn’t too impressed with Seth in this skit. I thought his accent wasn’t that great and it was too in and out. Kind of like Helen Hunt’s in As Good As It Gets but without the Oscar. For a second I thought Seth was going to do Top of The Morning solo but thankfully they weren’t that stupid. Neeson was okay here and I did laugh at the makeover montage. The ending bit with the mirror didn’t really work although I did his enjoy brawl with Riggle at the end. Seth’s accent just killed whatever chances I had of really liking it. Yes I just dissed Seth and no- the world did not end. **1/4 Boner Juice Cast- Poehler, Riggle Thoughts- Well that was an interesting way for Rob Riggle to make his SNL debut. I’m sure his fellow marines must be very proud. Given that we see the first commercial 10,000 times it’s a tad disheartening that it had to suck. I did laugh at Riggle’s enormous boner at the end (that came out so wrong) but other then that this was a pretty lame parody. Come on SNL- surely we can make fun of something a bit harder to get a laugh at. *1/2 Crazy Parrot Cast- Neeson, Armisen, Dratch Thoughts- This took a while to set-up but once it did- I’d have to say it was worth it if just for the parrot singing Strangers in the Night. Fred was awesome as the parrot- only Will Forte could’ve done a comparable job. I loved how he kept pecking around Neeson and just generally being a total ass. The best was when Neeson was talking about his dead wife and the parrot kept pecking around him and generally being a huge nuisance while being fed crackers by Rachel. Fred was seriously just amazing as here. I really hope they give him more roles to showcase his ability since at times I feel he’s underused. I felt the bird pooping on Neeson at the end was a bit unnecessary but that doesn’t mar what was a very funny skit. ***1/2 Wake Up San Diego Cast- Neeson, Rudolph, Chris Parnell, Thompson Thoughts- The first few minutes of this skit were such a direct rip-off of Morning Latte that I thought Cheri O’Teri should show everyone she’s not dead by coming back and suing Maya. This was absolutely terrible. It’s one of those skits where you get what the joke is early on and it’s not funny- but then you realise that’s the joke for the rest of skit and you’re stuck watching this horrible drek because there’s an NHL lockout and there’s no Canucks game to flip to. Anyway- skits like these make me question why Maya is still employed. She’s that bad. Neeson’s geeky white guy dancing is the only reason this isn’t in negative stars. Just awful. DUD Modest Mouse Thoughts- I had never heard of these guys before SNL (as you can tell by my taste and ratings for music stuff- my music knowledge is about 0) but I thought these guys did a good job and gave a good performance. I don’t really know the title of the song or else I’d put it up there. While they sound like a million other bands out there- a good song is a good song and they didn’t violate any of my rules for musical guests. So kudos for that. *** Weekend Update Cast- Tina Fey, Poehler, Hammond, Meyers, Armisen, Thompson Thoughts- To all those who said if a guy took over as a co-anchor they’d get compared to Jimmy and it’d ruin their career, well: Amy and Tina played with Barbies. Not only did they play with Barbies- but they sang too. I think it’s becoming quite clear to everyone that after five episodes- these girls just are not working. For two weeks in a row- Weekend Update has started at 12:20. They’ve had seven commentaries in two episodes. I don’t think Lorne is saying “Great job ladies- keep it up,” with moves like that. Colin Quinn was bad his first season but he was trying and at least he was doing Weekend Update. Amy and Tina aren’t doing Weekend Update. It’s still the Smiley Cutsie Playtime Hour and it’s getting really tiring. I mean- THEY PLAYED WITH BARBIES. That’s a slap in the face to Chevy, Norm, Miller, Nealon, Aykroyd and all the other Update greats. Norm was fired for not being funny while these two girls can play with Barbies and sing and it’s a-okay. (Yes I know Lorne didn’t fire Norm- I just find it funny) While some of the jokes are admittedly funny, the majority of the jokes just fall flat and bomb. The girls can smile and giggle all they want but turning Weekend Update into an 8th grade slumber party isn’t going to change the fact that it sucks. Weekend Update to me was about biting satire, witty jokes and just weekly skewering the most powerful and famous people in the world while doing jokes that were sometimes really dirty or really sometimes offensive. It was not about two women playing with Barbies. It was great to see Seth on Update again. While his commentary was outdated I still thought it was really funny especially his bit at the end. Fred was awesome as the deaf comic. Aside from Gandolfini- that was my favourite bit on Weekend Update this year. The Adam and Eve joke was hilarious and I loved the interplay between him and Kenan. Kenan’s reaction to his various racial jokes was funny stuff. I’d love to see this character show up again. Darrell’s Ashcroft was decent but the problem with doing Aschcroft is that not many people really know what he sounds like or any of his ticks that Darrell would impersonate- so it’s just going to fall flat no matter what he does. He gave it a good try though although I like his Rumsfeld better. This Update pretty much followed the same script as last weeks. Tina and Amy were terrible and again had to be bailed out by some funny commentaries. I think Lorne should seriously consider making a change. **3/4 Appalachian Emergency Room Cast- Neeson, Meyers, Hammond, Poehler, Armisen, Parnell, Rudolph, Riggle, Thompson Thoughts- This was alright but I think Appalachian Emergency Room has been done too many times and is starting to lose its lustre. I still laugh but I’m a bit tired of seeing the same skit done over and over. That and Maya really cannot do a good accent to save her life. Parnell’s Trevor just wasn’t as good as it had been previously. I still love Darrell and Amy’s characters and I thought Neeson and Riggle were funny but it just didn’t work as well as the others did. Over-saturation I guess. **1/2 I Need a Drug Sniffing Dog Cast- Neeson, Poehler, Parnell, Thompson Thoughts- I don’t know why but I found this to be very funny and at times was close to hitting ****. The exchange between Neeson and Parnell about his five year old (He hates cops- the Rodney King thing) and somehow referencing Bill Kurtis on A&E was brilliant. I also loved Neeson’s various reasons for needing the dog. Amy reminding him about buying p-o-t also had me laughing as was Parnell saying, “I can spell”. My big complaint is I thought this went on for too long. Kenan bailing out to get them pot and then subsequently going to their place to smoke it was just not needed. Until the unneeded last bit- I thought Kenan was great here. It’s always fun when you get these little gems at 12:40. It makes up staying up this late this worth it. ***1/2 Modest Mouse Thoughts- While I liked the first song, this song sounded like every other song I’ve heard from band trying to sound different. While that isn’t necessarily breaking one of my rules for musicians- it does make for a bland and boring performance. But who cares really? U2!!!!~~ is coming next week and if you think my creaming over Seth each week is bad- just wait. This was whatever. ** The Bottom Line- The avg. skit was **.56 making this a thumbs up show. I had low expectations going into this show thanks to Liam Neeson never making me think anything other then ‘Yea- that guys’ bland’ but he was a pretty good host. Nothing was truly great on this show but every skit was pretty solid with only one skit really standing out as truly bad. I enjoyed some of the original and offbeat humour like the parrot and pot skit. Weekend Update continues to be a real sore spot that at times it seems like it’s dragging the show down but until they ditch Amy they have to keep starting it late and put as many commentaries as they can. This was a solid unspectacular show but they greatly improved on last week’s crapfest and hopefully Luke Wilson can make me think he is more then that bland guy with the talented brother. Hey- worst case scenario we still got U2. Thumbs Up

MDH257 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Good Show this week. I don't think anyone is willing to tell Tina that it isn't working with Amy, (We know Amy got the slot because she's Tina's friend and I think Tina wants to prove something about women being able to do anything). I don't think a change will be made until next season. If Tina leaves they can put someone else with Amy, If Tina stays I'm betting it will stay as is. It’s also amusing when the show has her play white people when she’s not. Well, when she's in a skit and a black man plays her husband you ask how the guy's familly feels about him being married to a white women, so I think you just like taking shots at her. Why do I even get started with the Maya comments?
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Yeah....so it seemed like the time Keenan got on tonights show was more than all of his other appearences combined... Well Kenan and Finesse hadn't really been on the show at all. Kenan's really funny and criminally underused so I'm glad he got some airtime. I'm glad Finesse is turning into the other black guy since I've never found him to be very funny. I think Lorne is starting to realise they're not working which is Step 1 in admitting you have a problem at the desk. I think Lorne is afraid to pull the trigger because of Tina's influence on the show and all that. It's just sad how bad it is. Well, when she's in a skit and a black man plays her husband you ask how the guy's familly feels about him being married to a white women, so I think you just like taking shots at her. Why do I even get started with the Maya comments? I know. When it comes to Maya I can be a real asshole.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I actually watched a lil SNL this week for the Modest Mouse performances...I was just in The City to see them at Radio City on Tuesday night. Both songs were very good...and, Bob, theyve been playing for like 10 years so theyre not some new band trying to sound different. And, U2 next week? Two good bands in a row? Very nice... razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 Ok let me give it to you straight the hippie skit went on too long......if it was not for Amy it would of been a complete dud. SNL needs to put Amy, Fred, Keenen, Chris in every skit they are the future of the show. And they need to keep Will Forte away from singing on WU. I would rather see Chris Parnell do a rap instead of the annoying randomness that is Forte's songs.

I would rather see Chris Parnell do a rap instead of the annoying randomness that is Forte's songs. Come on! "I'm a grown man. I know that spells pot." Parnell isn't really the future of the show. He peaked in 2000-2001 but then Lorne inexplicably let him go to major backlash. Ever since they brought him back in March 2002 he just hasn't done anything and is just used as filler. The Salazar and Gunther bits on WU are genius. They need to do that again.

Guest thebigjig Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I don't quite understand the love for Seth's Kerry impression... it's decent, but I'm kind of baffled by the praise you heap upon it every week. It's not an accurate impression in voice or in mannerisms (why does he smile so damn much?) which kind of bugs me because Kerry isn't a hard character to do. Bush's voice is hard to impersonate, but Kerry's voice is pretty distinctive.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I noticed Kerry smiled a lot during the first debate- so I think Seth got it from there. He did smile awkwardly at times. He got the hand motions down as well. He also has a ton of funny lines. I think his voice was pretty good. Bush is really hard to do and coupled that with Will Ferrell pretty much making his mark as W. makes it even harder. Forte's done an admirable job
TheBigSwigg 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I hate the fact that SNL is slowly degrading into MAD TV. I think that the parrot sketch was the first one to make me laugh out loud all year. Tina and Amy should be banned from the WU desk FOREVER.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 14, 2004 I don't watch Mad TV so I can't answer that comparison. This was a good show though- much better then the Winslet suckfest.
