AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Have to go with Goodfellas here. The Godfathers are better movies, but Goodfellas captures the gangster mentality better than any other film.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I put Godfather II down because I consider that the best actual movie on the list. That said, the past 30 years (the so called modern period) isn't even the main period for gangster movies...that would be the early 30s through White Heat in 1949. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I put down "Other" for the Untouchables. I would consider that a "gangster film..."

Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 what was the name of that worthless mob movie starring Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey and Richard Greico? while I'm asking, wasn't there a gangster movie with Matthew McCohnahey (i can never spell that right), Ethan Hawke and some others? Vanhalen 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I voted for Casino as I think its vastly underrated, and deals with a good timeframe in history
Downhome 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 while I'm asking, wasn't there a gangster movie with Matthew McCohnahey (i can never spell that right), Ethan Hawke and some others? Are you talking about The Newton Boys? It got low ratings, but I always enjoyed it. Being based in the 1920's and a mix of a western and a gangster film, it has always been interesting to me. Dwight Yoakam is awesome in it too. The other one you are talking about is Mobsters. My pick goes to The Goodfellas by the way.

Special K 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I vote Godfather 2, but if people haven't seen it, Miller's crossing is a great gangster flick.
Vyce 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Godfather part I. Goodfellas is a strong second, though. BTW, I think I'm in the minority here, but I've always thought that Godfather part I was a MUCH superior movie than part II. And let's not even speak of part III. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Goodfellas is ahead of The Godfather, and Scarface ahead of Once Upon A Time In America. You're insane. That said, I voted The Godfather: Part II. And Miller's Crossing and The Untouchables should be on here ahead of Scarface, Casino and Mean Streets.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I started to vote for Godfather II then noticed it's for "favorite" not "best". I clicked the vote button, but before it was loaded up I stopped it and changed my vote, so I'm not sure it let me change my vote. I changed my vote to Goodfellas, since it's my favorite. Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted November 23, 2004 The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and GoodFellas are three of my top five favorite movies. My favorite out of those three changes from time to time, but I voted for Godfather II. Casino is another one of my favorite mob movies, as well as one of my top ten favorite movies overall. I'm still waiting for a Special Edition DVD. Mean Streets is pretty underrated, in my opinion. It's definitely worth checking out. Just about any movie directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro is good, and Mean Streets is no exception. I don't really consider Scarface to be a gangster or mob movie in the traditional sense, but that's an argument for another time. I thought it was okay, but nowhere near the level of most of the other movies listed. In my opinion, The Untouchables is a much better De Palma film. Donnie Brasco is criminally underrated. The "fuhgetaboutit" scene and the Japanese restaurant scene are two of favorite scenes from any mob movie.

KingPK 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2004 The Godfather is more "epic", but Goodfellas is better in my mind because everyone put so much into their character (especially Pesci) and, like someone said, captured the mentality better. Plus, the movie had a nice layer of humor on it. Scarface has it's moments, but it's very long and didn't keep my attention all the way through like the above two movies did. BrokenTiger 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2004 I voted for 'Goodfellas' because it is entertaining...even with repeated viewings. Plus I loved the scene in the bar with Liotta & Pesci "...what do you mean I'm funny? What the fuck is so funny about me?" I loved Godfather I & II; as well as The Untouchables too...Kevin Costner's blandness factor may have put it down a notch in my eyes. Just my 0.02 cents. Guest Shutterspeed Report post Posted November 24, 2004 Nice to see that Goodfellas is leading. And don't bother debating what should and shouldn't be on the list - his username is "benoitrulz4life". Give him the benefit of the doubt.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted November 24, 2004 Scarface, chico. Bury those cockroaches. I saw Goodfellas a couple weeks ago, and I was really disappointed. I really don't like DeNiro as an actor, though I can see why he gets so much recognition for his role in the movie. Fuck, Joe Pesci is annoying. As the most well-made film, I have to go with the Godfather here. Nothing even comes close. The Godfather is cinematic legend.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2004 Goodfellas is my pick. Probably the best film ever made. Ray Liotta is the star of that movie, and that's saying something because Joe Pesci was incredible as were De Niro and Bracco. Godfather didn't keep my interest, but maybe I should re-watch it. Haven't cared to see all of Godfather II. Untouchables was too cheesy to get me interested and Casino made me go night-night. Haven't seen Once Upon A Time, Donnie Brasco or Mean Streets. Only saw the last half of Scarface, not interested in seeing it in full.
Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted November 24, 2004 Scarface is beating The Godfather? I don't really get the Scarface love. It has a few decent moments, but it didn't hold my interest as well as the other movies listed. In my opinion, none of the characters in Scarface are likeable, which is one of the reasons I could never really get into the movie.
