Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 I just bought this yesterday, and have listened to it a couple times so far...got the version with the bonus DVD, but not the one with the booklet included. Anyway, I think this is a great album. Much more enjoyable for me than "All That You Can't Leave Behind" from three years ago. Seems like the songs are a little more aggressive with their riffs, and the lyrics are a little more passionate from Bono this time. Still doesn't beat "Achtung Baby" as my favorite U2 album of all time, but it's up there probably.
Mik 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 I like it. "City of Blinding Lights", "Original of the Species", and "Vertigo" are some of my favorites. Solid album all the way through.
Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 Well, Best Buy has the CD for $7.99 on Friday, so I'll be getting it then. I can't wait to listen to it.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 Who'd have thought there'd be a day when you can get a new U2 album for $7.99? It's a winner. "City of Blinding Lights" and "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" are the best, and it's consistently good the rest of the way through. Some of it's a bit too adult-contemporary for my tastes, but for the most part it's a very good U2 album. I don't think it's going to be making any moves into the pantheon of Greatest U2 Albums Ever (i.e. War, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby), but it's get some superb high points. Boner Kawanger 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 I really like it, especially "City of Blinding Lights". "Vertigo" is a catchy song, and "Sometimes You Can't Make It..." is especially emotional if you know the source of it. I'd say it's the best U2 album since Achtung Baby. Matt Young 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 I didn't like Vertigo at first, but it's growing on me. My cousin, who has similar tastes in music to mine, said that the album's great. I'll probably purchase it at the $7.99 price point.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2004 I downloaded it a few weeks ago. City of Blinding Lights is amazing and easily my favourite song on the album. I also love Origin of the Spieces, Sometimes.... and One Step Closer. Every song is a winner- I like this a lot more then ATLYCB and Achtung Baby but not as much as Joshua Tree

spiny norman 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 I really don't like Vertigo and actually dreaded this album and their new direction upon hearing it. I heard some of the album in a shop yesterday and it didn't sound anywhere near as bad, but I'm still very hesitant in picking it up because of how much I dislike Vertigo. I'd need to hear a second single to convince me.
Boner Kawanger 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 There are actually no other songs like "Vertigo" on the album. The only two that come close are "All Because of You" and "Love and Peace or Else", only because they're more upbeat and rockier than the other songs. Matt Young 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 What's the difference between the 3 versions of the album I've been hearing about? Supposedly there's the CD, a Cd and DVD, and a CD/DVD with bonus tracks or something. I'm guessing that only the CD itself is on sale for $7.99, right? Regardless, is the sale all day long or just til noon? I can't make it out to Best Buy til after 5 P.M.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2004 The CD is just that - the CD. CD/DVD includes a DVD of some live performances, studio footage, that sort of stuff. The big honkin' package includes the DVD, the CD with the bonus track "Fast Cars" added, and a 40-page book of pictures and art selected by the band. I'd just buy the CD and get "Fast Cars" on iTunes. Good song.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Their last album was a gush of touchy-feely emotional songs that found a niche with an especially sensitive post-WTC USA, but I never really cared for it. As an old-school fan (songs like Desire and Still Haven't Found are my faves) I'd like some freakin' rock, but by what I hear Vertigo is the height of the rock, and then it gets mushy again. Well ATLYCB was big way before 9/11. ATYLCB has In A Little While and New York- two non touchy-feely emotional songs that rule all. How to Dismantle... has some good rock songs like Love and Peace and All Because of You. The songs about Bono's dad and City of Blinding Lights are tremendous.
