Modern Man's Hustle Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 And isn't the new LB just a remix album with a few new tracks? I don't know how excited I can get about that. I just looked, and apparently it's five new tracks, the rest is just remixes. I'm disappointed now.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 The Kaiser Chiefs can fuckity fuck fuck off. Leeds scum.
Modern Man's Hustle Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 "I Predict a Riot" is such a fucking terrible song. I don't see how anyone can claim that they're a good band. If it's indicative of their entire body of work, they're awful.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Fucking awful indeed. Mick Jones-ass Buzzcocks-apin'-ass mofuckas. It's rare that I hate a band's big debut single that much.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Maybe I'll go my whole life without hearing them. It didn't work with the Bravery, but there's hope for this one.
Modern Man's Hustle Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I heard it on Fuse's Daily Download the other day. I actually used to like that channel, then I didn't watch it for like three months and now all they do is play terrible terrible music.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Didn't Fuse used to be MuchMusic? That (MM) was an interesting channel about a decade ago—they'd play stuff that never got further in the states than college radio, while also playing Backstreet Boys a year before that kinda shit would fly on this side of the border—but man, it was downhill when they started to cater to the American crowd. Granted, I cared for little of what they played back when they were Canadian-centric, but it was different from what I'd see on MTV. (Keep in mind this was the mid-90s, when that channel slowly turned into all Real World, all the time.)
Modern Man's Hustle Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 MuchMusic was an interesting channel, yeah. Ed the Sock was the best VJ ever. Now all they care about is catering to the faux-scenesters crowd.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I don't know what Ed the Sock is. My memories of MM stem from my senior of high school, which was forever ago.
Modern Man's Hustle Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Ed the Sock  They were short on VJs, so one of them just put on a sock and made a puppet out of it...the sock became the most popular VJ on the channel.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I used to have a crush on this cute Asian chick that vj'ed there.
Art Sandusky Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I'm going to have a bunch of Zappa download onto my computer while I'm at work tonight and finally listen to this stuff I keep hearing about.
Modern Man's Hustle Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I downloaded the new Nine Inch Nails cd. Trent Reznor apparently hasn't grown up at all in the past few years.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I'm never gonna think Zappa's more than just alright. And I'm fine with that.
Nighthawk Posted April 16, 2005 Author Report Posted April 16, 2005 Is Zappa Italian or is he a Jew? Â Reznor has been worthless for better than ten years. "Head Like a Hole" is my favorite NIN song, because it's over the top ridiculous. It reminds me of Manson's "This Is the New Shit", except I think Trent was being serious.
The Czech Republic Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 He's a bunch of things, mostly Sicilian with some Jewish and French and I think Armenian too
The Czech Republic Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 I'm never gonna think Zappa's more than just alright. And I'm fine with that. Which albums did you base this on?
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 The three that I own plus the numerous others I've heard from a couple of Zappa-leaning friends. I've heard enough of a broad range Zappa material to know I'll never love him. Â I'd admire him a lot, though.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 So Tom Waits' Rain Dogs is my all-time favorite album, I decided. I was thinking the Wedding Present's Seamonsters might take the top spot, but I may've burned myself out on it. (I still love it, though.) Â But I was listening to Rain Dogs earlier today, and goddamn if it doesn't continue to be the most gorgeous and twisted thing I've ever heard.
Nighthawk Posted April 16, 2005 Author Report Posted April 16, 2005 Really? That's my favorite Waits album as well. Since I bought Franks Wild Years not too long ago I've listened to it several times and am liking it more and more, but Rain Dogs is still tops. Â I'd be hard pressed to come up with an all-time favorite album. Among the contenders, The Head on the Door, Foetus' Hole (Sink would be a consideration were it not a compilation) and Mechanical Animals, which since I've gotten into dissasociative drugs has taken on a whole new relevance.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 The older I get, the more stuff falls out of contention for the top slot, at an increasingly rapid pace. Some Prince albums, Loveless and Rain Dogs (whoa) are the only things that have stayed in my ever-shifting top 10 over the last two years. Â Rain Dogs is also my favorite Tom Waits album, but I haven't heard the whole catalog. Still, it beats Closing Time, Small Change, Swordfishtrombones, Franks Wild Years, Bone Machine, and Real Gone so far. Man, he's good.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Ya know, I've never heard much of tom waits, and I feel kind of bad about it. I know of his greatness and like what I've heard, but I have yet to buy any of his albums. I think when I get some kale, I'll pick up some of his material. Besides Rain Dogs[/]i, whihc seems to be praised by the posters who I think know what's up, what are some other great/fucking amazing waits albums?
Nighthawk Posted April 16, 2005 Author Report Posted April 16, 2005 Swordfishtrombones bandies around with Rain Dogs as most well liked Waits album. All the other ones Edwin mentioned are great as well, except Real Gone which I think is only pretty good by his standards and not the best place to start. Bone Machine, while fantastic, is also not a good introduction, in my opinion. Nighthawks at the Diner and the soundtrack One From the Heart are also excellent.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Would I like any Sonic Youth? I've heard them described in several different ways, but have had zero exposure to them, except for my friend Bob's t-shirt with Sonic Youth written on a washing machine.
Nighthawk Posted April 16, 2005 Author Report Posted April 16, 2005 I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy early Sonic Youth. Noisy, atonal, harsh, droning and distorted. Sister marked the point where they really progressed towards actual songs with actual structures. That and the one after it, Daydream Nation, are good albums. I don't think you'd dislike either of them, at worst you'd appreciate them objectively, like Inc does Zappa. I haven't listened to anything later than that.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 I'm still a massive fan of Alice as a 'complete' Waits album. Rain Dogs is equally awesome. I think Seamonsters is one of my favourites ever too. It is in competition with Kimono My House at all times. I can never decide whether 'Dare' from the former or 'Equator' from the latter is the best song ever. I usually cop out and just go for 'Another Girl, Another Planet'.
ArkhamGlobe Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Rain Dogs is easily my favourite Waits album as well, and one of the few albums that are pretty much locked at the top of my list of all-time favourites. My second favourite is Franks Wild Years, while I readily admit that Swordfishtrombones may very well be a better album, I just like Franks Wild Years more for some reason.
5_moves_of_doom Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 While I prefer Swordfishtrombones maybe just a tad since it was my first Waits album and as an 8th grader (could've been 9th, actually) I was just totally freaked out by it, Rain Dogs is indeed top ten material. However, for some reason I often consider them one compact artistic statement, despite there being quite a few differences. Â I've never heard any The Wedding Present because for some reason I always had this predetermined judgement that they were lame. But once I think about it, I realize that I've never heard a single song and I have absolutely no idea what they're like. I suppose I'll have to check them out at some point. Â My favorite album is... I don't know. Probably an Eno record or something by the Velvet Underground, but I don't want to think about it right now because I already have a headache.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 Wait, I think it might be Seamonsters now.
Nighthawk Posted April 17, 2005 Author Report Posted April 17, 2005 I want to listen to long, droning, shoegazing, ambient albums. If you know any that you like a lot, recommend them to me.
