There's been a few good tribute albums that have come out...not many in relation to the many bad ones...but they had a good Daniel Johnston one that came out not too long ago...and the Elvis Costello one wasn't so bad. The Rubber Soul one that came out last year or so was absolutely terrible. I thought that that Led Zepplin tribute CD, Encomium was pretty good...even the Hootie and the Blowfish version of "Hey, Hey, What Can I Do?". And I thought the Working Class Hero CD tribute to John Lennon had some good stuff on it.

If I Were a Carpenter is the only good tribute album. But I think that's because the Carpenters had some really good songs that they performed substandardly.

Re: the Band tribute album, the Allmans do a really good version of TNTDODD and I'm sure the Mule will be good. Otherwise, I have no interest.

Scarlett Johansson is recording a Tom Waits tribute album. This could either be the best or worst thing ever.

I haven't heard that particular song, but I disagree with you, sir. Nothing this year will be better than the TV on the Radio CD...some CDs that have come close include:

Yellow House Grizzly Bear

The Califone record

Night Ripper Girl Talk

I've had a productive couple weeks in finding good CDs released this year...first with Grizzly Bear, then Califone, and today I downloaded the Girl Talk CD, which is amazing, if only for the sheer ridiculousness of doing things like mixing The Beatles with Nirvana with Elton John with The Notorious B.I.G. and other such foolishness.

Girl Talk runs out of steam in the second half, when it gets all too trancey, and overall it's not as clever when you've heard it ten times, but I really like the first 5 or 6 tracks. That Grizzly Bear album's pretty good too, if not terribly memorable. I always like it when I'm listening to it but it's yet to really stick with me.

I've only listened to the Girl Talk CD like...2 or so times, so the whole "pick out the random ass sample...Hey! Is that the Breeders?" type thing hasn't worn off yet. I'll probably listen to it like...100 times this week and then only occasionally after that, but I imagine it'll still be top 10 or so of the year for me. And I really like the Grizzly Bear CD. I can't say that I have favorite songs on it, I more just like to put it on and get immersed in it. It's good mood music; to use a cliche, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Pretty much my thoughts based on a couple of listens. Might be the sort of thing I'd appreciate more if I gave it a close listen without any distractions, like the computer or driving.

I want to hear that LCD Soundsystem thing, but I'm allergic to paying for mp3s. No luck finding it on any file sharing service I frequent, either. So, Byron, if you'd hook a brother up with a sendspace, I might return the favor.

That whole CD is great. Really great. I hope they work together extensively in the future. I knew the CD was gonna be good when the Spanish opera singer came on in the first song.

I posted this in the movies forum too.

Take this with a grain of salt but I saw this on another website:

Apparently, VH1 are planning to do another Supergroup, this time featuring Chris Jericho on vocals, Jerry Only from the Misfits on bass, Dave Lombrdo of Slayer on drums, Mick Thompson of Slipknot on guitar, and Mick Mars of Motley Crue on guitar.

Mick Thompson from Slipknot? Not many of the other guys are 'musical pioneers' or anything...but...Slipknot. Yeeps! It's good to see that Mick Mars is presumedly well enough to do something like this. I don't really care anything about Motley Crue, but last I heard he wasn't doing too good, although that was about a year or so ago.

I listened to it, and agree. I think the last song Dead Man's Will (I believe) is my favorite. So good.

I second that. TV on the Radio is the best thing going in music today. They're so fuckin' great that they have David Bowie...singing backup. I was listening to Young Liars today and I think my new favorite TVOTR line is "Fuckin' for fear of not wanting to fear again". "Young Liars" is a revelation among awesomeness. And they put on good concerts.

I'm still working on this one. Some songs are catching on, but I'm not geeking out about this record like the rest of you guys are. Yet, at least.

Work harder. What are you listening to by 'em? I'm of the mind that if you don't think the Young Liars EP is one of the greatest things to come out in the last decade or so you just don't like music. I can understand not being able to get 100% into their first full-length, because some of their stuff wasn't ahem...'fully realized', but the EP and the new album...man...

I think it's kinda odd that Desperate Youth... seemed almost like a step backwards after the Young Liars EP, even though both are great.

I'm listening to Return to Cookie Mountain. I have part of the first song stuck in my head, but a lot of this is just unorganized sound; a bunch of distortion and yelping. There's no inspired sequencing, or dynamic contrast, or anything. It's just sound.

EDIT: I wasn't being fair. "Province" resembles a song. David Bowie...SINGING BACKUP!
