For the first time, the PRIDE New Years Eve card will be aired on PPV (January 2nd, 05). I don't have to - and quite frankly I don't want to - hype this card; just look at it.

SHOCKWAVE

FIGHT CARD

Fedor Emelianenko (Russia) vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Brazil)

(This is a double title match, for both the PRIDE FIGHTING heavyweight championship

as well for the title of 2004 Grand Prix heavyweight champion)

Hidehiko Yoshida (Japan) vs. Rulon Gardner (USA)

Dan Henderson (USA) vs. Yuki Kondo (Japan)

Takanori Gomi (Japan) vs. Jens Pulver (USA)

Makoto Takimoto (Japan) vs. Henry “Sentoryu” Miller (USA)

Stefan Leko (Germany) vs. Ikuhisa Minowa (Japan)

Paolo “Giant” Silva (Brazil) vs. Choi Mu Bae (Korea)

Yoji Anjo (Japan) vs. Ryan Gracie (Brazil)

Ryo Chonan (Japan) vs. Anderson Silva

**and I, of course, meant 12.30.04**

My PRIDE sig pic has Silva in it, and he was at the initial press conference for the NYE show.

PRIDE likes to announce who will be there much more than who they will be fighting. There is more of an interest in the single fighters than the matches.

Who has Rulon Gardner been training with and does he have a chance to win?

Team Quest, so he's smart about it.

If he can avoid the takedown, which I'm sure he can given his pedigree, I wouldn't be surprised to see him hit Yoshida like a ton of bricks. But Yoshida can take a shot, as he showed against Wandy, although Wand isn't a big strong 250 lb farm boy. Needless to say, Rulon has a very good chance at victory here, but he's too green for me to pick him. I say Yoshida gets the takedown later on in the fight, and subs him. That would be impressive for Rulon though.

He's been training with Henderson and Team Quest. I honestly cant see the guy winning, unless he turns out to have some hellacious strikes. Once it gets on the ground, it's going to be an uphill climb, but Yoshida will pull it out.

*crosses fingers for Hunt/Cro Cop*

This is speculation at this point, but if it's true, I have another reason to order the show.

From Puroresu Power;

"(DSE/PRIDE) To the surprise of no one now, the promotion announced Mirko Cro Cop vs. Kevin Randleman for their 12/31 Saitama Super Arena show. A potentially interesting note coming from the promotion is that they may start the show at 4:30 PM - that would be 90 minutes before the initial air time of 6 PM on Fuji TV. K-1's 12/31 Osaka Dome show will have a 4 or 5 PM start and won't air on TBS/free-TV until 9 PM.

Expect to hear some "trial balloons" come out shortly in the media to see if there is any interest in the following fights for DSE: Kiyoshi Tamura vs. Ikuhisa Minowa, Mark Hunt vs. Igor Vovchanchyn, Fabricio Werdum (Mirko's BJJ trainer) vs. Naoya Ogawa, and Giant Silva vs. Sentoryu. Outside of Hunt/Vovchanchyn, I don't like any of those fights. "

I think the fitting statement here is "HOLY SHIT!"

Noooo, why? Igor was gonna drop weight and run roughshod all over the LHW division. He can't stand with Mark Hunt, and I don't know if he will try to take him to the ground.

This fight will be bad in that it will be boring if it goes to the ground, as it would end quickly or just be lots of stalling, and I really don't give Igor a chance against Hunt's chin, not to mention the fact that Hunt is just a better Kickboxer overall. DAMNIT!

Igor is gonna be in the MW GP anyways I've heard, that would be the bomb-diggity.

EDIT: Nevermind.

If Randleman loses, where does he go from here?

If he wins, do we just ignore his loss to H2O man and catapult him up to the top again? If he wins this fight, he's back for good I think, he just needs a better team to train with to avoid those submissions. If he loses, well I don't know then.

Werdum vs. Ogawa is a fight that I'm interested in seeing, out of morbid curiousity. I wanna see Ogawa get tested on the ground. That was pretty lame how he just gave up his arm to Fyodor in that fight, probably because he didn't want to get pounded. A judo silver medallist shouldn't be submitted that easily, but whatever. Werdum should do a number on him.

Randleman has plenty of options, depending on how he does business. If he wins, it won't bring him any higher cause he already beat Mirko. He already faced Fedor, so it will be a while for a rematch. Noguiera and Herring are possibilities here, especially Nog.

If he loses, there is still a Noguiera fight that could draw some interest. Certainly if Nog loses to Fedor, this fight could happen, as it would be a rebound fight for both and there is a storyline involved w/ Nog beating Coleman.

The UFC LightHeavyweight division is another possibility (or even the heavyweight division). Rematches against Liddell and Couture, a match against Tito. The trash talk between the monster and tito would make for a great feud IMO. The heavyweight division is a bit thin. He'd be competition for Eilers, Arlovski, Sylvia and Mir. I dunno how "big" the monster name is with UFC fans, but I can envision the guy in any of these matches and buy it (not buy the PPV, but buy him competing). Randleman has a big upside - he has a great look, is charismatic, has the credentials - the only down side is that he was probably the boringest champion in UFC history (match wise).

He's just the most inconsistent fighter I've ever seen I think, he should have beat up Sakuraba. Yes, I said BEAT UP. It's ridiculous how much potential he has, and how if he just became a monster (IRONY!~) that he would not only win a lot more but also be a lot more exciting. Some of the best wrestling this side of Mark Coleman, really good hands, tremendous power and athlete in general, the list goes on. He's getting up there in age though, but he doesn't look it. He needs a different team. That's the only thing I can say.

The thing is if he loses, it's a lot worse then you make it out to be, but if he wins, it's much bigger then you make it out to be. If he loses then his first fight really was just a fluke (and it was considered as such, seeing how Mirko was still treated like a top Heavyweight and Randleman lost to Waterman). As a result his stock as a heavy falls and he's pretty much done in terms of being a threat. If he does well or even wins, his stock rises dramatically as he shows it was no fluke and he becomes a CREDIBLE heavyweight threat.

I'll put it this way; while MMAweekly isn't exactly Gospel when it comes to MMA rankings, when he beat Cro Cop I don't even remember him placing in the top ten, or even having people pick him to make it past the second round. Mirko was still in the top five though and people still thought that he would face Fyodor eventually for the Title. It was like Kevin was just a blip on the radar, so to speak.

I don't think anyone saw it as a fluke. Kevin timed his strike perfectly and had the power to put Cro Cop down. It wasn't a lucky punch because Randleman intended on doing it.

If he loses, he loses. He already lost to Ron Waterman, and Cro Cop is a better fighter than Ron Waterman (and also Sakuraba). So his stock can't fall any lower. If he wins, he already beat Cro Cop, so his stock can't get any higher either. There really is no benefit here for the Monster other than the pay day.

I'm curious about the way Judo is played in the olympics. Is it strictly based on throws leading to points, or do they allow submissions too?

Did anyone listen to PPH34 rant? Hendo only got ten days to prepare for PRIDE 24, and thinks he could beat Nog if given time to prepare. This guy is just crazy, I take his word for it.

29.99? Thats way overpriced.

I'll just stick to downloading various matches instead.

This has nothing to do with this thread, and since the MMA thread doesn't really get any traffic around the time of a PPV, I thought I might as well post this here.

Odds for the next Superbrawl main event, with Tim Sylvia and Wes Sims:

Tim Sylvia -2500

Wes Sims +1250

Oh my goodness, I don't think I've ever seen odds that ridiculous, I literally laughed out loud when I saw it. I'm still chuckling just thinking about it, I don't think I've ever seen a betting line that widespread. Damn.

I read somewhere that Silva said he fought Rampage with injured ribs and took anti-inflammatories for them, it's on Sherdog somewhere, I can't seem to find it. Apparently he could barely train about a week before since it hurt so bad. I don't think he's lying either, since he is not the type of fighter that makes excuses.

Just adding to the myth that is Wanderlei :)

Sylvia weighed in for this fight at 290 LBS and he looks very out of shape. Simms apparently is pissed because he though the limit was 265 and didn't know it was an unlimited weight fight.

Sylvia will still murder him
