UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 This thread will be dedicated to producing the ultimate list of WCW matches that a completist must own. Mostly based on entertainment/workrate, however, in some rare cases, matches cannot be ignored (Sting/Hogan 97-98 bouts). Feel free to add Comments on matches ON the list...as well as to give GOOD REASONS why your nominees should make it. Right now I want your nominees for PPV matches. PPV matches only. MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 That's a nice list. I think Steamboat vs. Austin from Clash of Champions 8/94 should be added as Steaboat FINALLY triumphed over Austin in an awesome match which would unfortunately be his last in a brilliant career. With all those CW matches you have at the end, I think the 10-Man Cruiserweight Countdown Match has to be added that took place on Thunder leading up to SuperBrawl Revenge. It was Shane Helms vs. Shannon Moore vs. Evan Kourageous vs. Jamie Knoble vs. Billy Kidman vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Yang (Akio) vs. Kaz Hayashi vs. Lash Leroux vs. Elix Skipper The rules were just like the match at WMXX except the wrestlers came from the back and not from just outside the ring. The CW Countdown ran a lot longer and was much finer than the WMXX match. It was a 20ish minute breath of fresh air and would be one of the last of its kind as WCW was bought out soon after as the Cruiserweight Division as we know it died. Quite honestly, I'm not sure why Mortis & Wrath Vs. Ernest Miller & Glacier is on it. Must be better than I originally remembered.
UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 Milennium, read the preface...Clash/TV comin' soon bro. Mortis/Wrath Vs. Glacier/Miller was quite good. That "Blood Runs Cold" angle was strange. AWESOME first match (Glacier/Wrath), nothing but CRAP in the middle (rematches, Glacier/Wrath, TV matches, etc.) and then another very good match at the end (The BATB tag). It was an exciting, well worked, hot opener. I felt it should be included.

Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 You gotta have Hogan v. Goldberg at the Georgia Dome on there for historical significance, especially if you've got him dropping the belt to Nash
Guest Loss Report post Posted December 21, 2004 WCW U.S. Champion Lex Luger Vs. "Dangerous" Dan Spivey WCW World Champion Ric Flair, Sid Vicious, Barry Windham, & Larry Zbyszko Vs. Sting, Brian Pillman, & WCW U.S. Tag Team Champions The Steiner Brothers Both strong matches. You might also include the Joshi tag from this show, as well as Vader/Hansen. I personally thought Wrestle War '91 was pretty loaded. Vader and Hansen have both had better matches, but the heat is amazing and there are some nice highspots. I wish it had gone longer. WCW World Tag Team Champions The Steiner Brothers Vs. WCW U.S. Champion Lex Luger & Sting WCW Television Champion Arn Anderson Vs. "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton If you're doing PPVs, the Steiners-Hase/Sasaki match from the WCW/NJ supershow on 03/21/91 would make a great addition to this list as well. Kudos for not including Flair/Fujinami, but you might want to add the Windham/Pillman taped fist match. WCW World Champion Lex Luger Vs. Ron Simmons Okay match for the talent involved, with Race carrying Luger from ringside, if that makes sense. Taylor/Eaton was also choice, from this show, but it's not on the comm version, only the PPV version of the show, if you can find it. Austin/Dustin is a must. Not a great match, but an interesting one. WCW World Champion Lex Luger & Arn Anderson Vs. "Z-Man" Tom Zenk & Terrence Taylor Fun match. I might include the battle royal for historical purposes, as it was the first of its kind. Liger's match isn't that outstanding, but he's a man possessed when he's in the ring. The rapid fire kicks on Mike Graham were breathtaking at the time. Sting/Abdullah v Pillman/Eaton rocks if you love chaos. Sting & The Great Muta Vs. The Steiner Brothers Good choice, and really the only thing worthwhile from this show that I can recall. WCW Light Heavyweight Champion Jushin "Thunder" Liger Vs. Brian Pillman WCW World Tag Team Champions Arn Anderson & "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton Vs. The Steiner Brothers WCW U.S. Champion "Ravishing" Rick Rude Vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat All three are terrific matches, but all are overshadowed by the Windham/Dustin v Austin/Zbyszko tag match, which is one of the best and most overlooked tag matches of the 90s. I'd probably give it ****-****1/2. WCW World Tag Team Champions The Steiner Brothers Vs. Tatsumi Fujinami & Takayuki Iizuka WCW World Champion Sting, WCW Television Champion Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, & Nikita Koloff Vs. WCW U.S. Champion "Ravishing" Rick Rude, "Stunning" Steve Austin, Arn Anderson, "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton, & Larry Zbyszko Both good matches. Pillman/Zenk from this show is excellent as well. WCW U.S. Champion "Ravishing" Rick Rude Vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat An excellent match. Sting/Cactus and Pillman/Flamingo are also worth inclusion. WCW World Champion Sting Vs. Big Van Vader Great choice! (Include Steamboat v Pillman from Halloween Havoc '92 *here*. I tend to think Austin/Williams v Windham/Dustin is excellent too, but I'm in the minority.) Sting Vs. Big Van Vader Great match from Starrcade '92, but so is Steamboat/Douglas v Windham/Pillman. WCW World Champion Big Van Vader Vs. Sting Loaded show, actually. There's the SMW tag match, Cactus/Orndorff and Benoit/Scorpio that all deserve inclusion too. WCW World Champion Big Van Vader Vs. Cactus Jack *nods* WCW World Champion Big Van Vader Vs. Ric Flair *nods* (The Thundercage match from SuperBrawl IV is a personal favorite, but not a necessity.) Big Van Vader Vs. The Boss WCW World Champion Ric Flair Vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat WCW World Tag Team Champions The Nasty Boys Vs. Cactus Jack & Maxx Payne All strong choices, and Dustin v Bunkhouse Buck should be here too. On paper, it doesn't sound like a great match, but I think it's quite outstanding. WCW World Tag Team Champions The Nasty Boys Vs. Cactus Jack & Kevin Sullivan Vader v Sting is pretty good here too, although not at the level of the Famous Three. WCW World Champion Ric Flair Vs. Hulk Hogan Kind of a historical must, but Austin/Steamboat is a better match and should probably be included. WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan Vs. Ric Flair Fun match. Ric Flair Vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage You skipped a ways, I see. The first half of 1995 wasn't too kind to WCW though, so I understand why. That said, both Hogan/Vader matches are enjoyable in a semi-perverse way and I might include them. Ric Flair Vs. Arn Anderson Brian Pillman Vs. Johnny B. Badd Both good choices. I tend to think Flair/Arn is overrated, but it was too memorable not to include. Ric Flair & Sting Vs. Brian Pillman & Arn Anderson Fun as hell, even if it was totally predictable. (Include the Joshi tag from World War 3. Benoit/Sasaki I remember being either horrible or really good. Might want to give it a watch and see what you think.) Jushin "Thunder" Liger Vs. Chris Benoit Shinjiro Ohtani Vs. Eddie Guerrero WCW World Champion Randy Savage Vs. Ric Flair Good choices. I like the triangle match more than most. I'm not sure a lot of people got it, but it's not essential or a must-have. (WOW! You skipped a lot. From the first half of 1996, here are some good choices: Flair v Savage - SuperBrawl VI Nastys v PE - SuperBrawl VI Sting/Booker v Road Warriors - Uncensored '96 Flair/Savage v Arn/Eddy - Slamboree '96 Sting v Giant - Slamboree '96 I don't think these are all great matches, but all were raved about at the time, so they're worth including for historical purposes.) WCW Cruiserweight Champion Dean Malenko Vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr. Chris Benoit Vs. Kevin Sullivan The powerbomb angle should really be included here as well. I also think Flair/Arn v Mongo/Greene is a better celebrity match than Bam Bam/LT. Psychosis Vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr. "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Lex Luger, & Sting Vs. The Outsiders & The Third Man Both good choices. Dean/Disco is good too, better than you'd think. (You skipped Hog Wild '96. Rey/Ultimo, Benoit/Malenko, Flair/Eddy and Hogan/Giant are all worthy of inclusion for one reason or another.) Chris Benoit Vs. Chris Jericho WCW World Champion Hollywood Hogan, The Outsiders, & nWo Sting Vs. Ric Flair, Sting, Lex Luger, & Arn Anderson Rey/Calo and Konnan/Juvi should probably be here too. WCW Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio, Jr. Vs. Dean Malenko Best match from the show. I remember Jericho/Syxx being decent, but I haven't watched it since it aired live. Hall/Nash v Harlem Heat is better than you'd think, and it has the post-match pose from the Outsiders that was in all the video packages for the next three years. (World War 3 has what many consider the best WCW match ever between Ultimo and Rey. You should probably include it.) WCW Cruiserweight Champion Dean Malenko Vs. J-Crown Champion Ultimo Dragon WCW U.S. Champion Eddie Guerrero Vs. Dean Malenko And Benoit/Jarrett. Liger/Rey isn't great with Liger coming off of brain surgery, but it's a big "name" match. Mortis Vs. Glacier "Diamond" Dallas Page Vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage You skipped the Eddy/Syxx ladder match at Souled Out, which got praise at the time, along with Hall/Nash v Luger/Giant from SuperBrawl VII, which is much better than you'd think. Eddy/Dean from Uncensored is a decent brawl. Mortis & Wrath Vs. Ernest Miller & Glacier Chris Benoit Vs. Kevin Sullivan Savage/Page from GAB '97 is worth a view. I'd also include Flair/Piper/Greene v Hall/Nash/Syxx. Largely forgettable, but perfect booking, and one of the few feel good moments for WCW fans during the NWO era. Then, there's Page/Hennig from Road Wild, which isn't essential, but is a fun match. WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho Vs. Eddie Guerrero If you're wanting to include a Mortis match, I'd include the one from this show over any of the others, as he carries three guys to something remotely entertaining. Wright/Ultimo is also surprisingly good. WCW Cruiserweight Champion Eddie Guerrero Vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr. Savage/DDP blowing off their feud in a cage match is noteworthy. If you're wanting to show just how bad WCW main events were at this point, Age In The Cage is a must. WCW World Champion Hollywood Hogan Vs. Sting Should have been the greatest PPV of all time and wasn't, but that's another discussion. Juventud Guerrera, Super Calo, Lizmark, Jr., and Chavo Guerrero, Jr. Vs. La Parka, Psicosis, Silver King, and El Dandy Chris Benoit Vs. Raven Flair/Bret was Flair's last really good match. I'd include it. Booker/Martel is excellent, and sad to watch, because of what Martel's comeback could have meant had he not gotten injured. WCW Televison Champion Rick Martel Vs. Booker T. WCW Televison Champion Booker T. Vs. Saturn WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho Vs. Juventud Guerrera WCW U.S. Champion "Diamond" Dallas Page Vs. Chris Benoit Sting Vs. Hollywood Hogan You got 'em all. Scott Steiner turning on his brother and tag team partner of 10 years was newsworthy at the time. (This is where Jericho/Malenko from UC '98 should go, post-match interview and all, if you're including the CW battle royal. There's also Goldberg/Saturn, which was GB's best match ever until that October.) WCW Cruiserweight Battle Royal WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho Vs. Cruiserweight Battle Royal Winner Good. Include the Booker/Benoit Best of 7 finale here, as well as Juvi/Kidman from BATB. Perry Saturn Vs. Raven Only halfway worthwhile match on the show, and it wasn't even that great. WCW Television Champion Chris Jericho Vs. Raven WCW World Champion Goldberg Vs. "Diamond" Dallas Page *nods* WCW Cruiserweight Champion Billy Kidman Vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr. Vs. Juventud Guerrera WCW Cruiserweight Champion Billy Kidman Vs. Eddie Guerrero WCW World Champion Goldberg Vs. Kevin Nash All the vitals. WCW Cruiserweight Champion Billy Kidman Vs. Mikey Whipwreck WCW World Champion Hollywood Hogan Vs. Ric Flair Benoit/Enos from Souled Out was surprisingly decent as well. Blitzkrieg Vs. Juventud Guerrera Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko Vs. Raven & Perry Saturn WCW World Champion Ric Flair Vs. Sting Vs. Hollywood Hogan Vs. "Diamond" Dallas Page I might include Hak/Bigelow, ONLY to show the difference between hardcore matches in WCW and the WWF at this point. WCW Tag Team Champions Rey Mysterio, Jr. & Billy Kidman Vs. Dean Malenko & Chris Benoit Vs. Raven & Perry Saturn Only thing worthwhile from the show. (Include the Benoit matches from both shows here. He was on a roll at this time.) WCW U.S. Champion Chris Benoit Vs. "Diamond" Dallas Page *nods* Chris Benoit Vs. Jeff Jarrett Chris Benoit Vs. Bret "Hitman" Hart *nods* (Jarrett and Benoit are requesting that you put their ladder match here.) Chris Benoit Vs. Sid Vicious (Most thought DDP/Jarrett and DDP/Jarrett/Arquette were the two best WCW matches of 2000. Include them here.) WCW World Champion Jeff Jarrett Vs. Booker T. Means even more with the Hogan angle before it. WCW World Champion Booker T. Vs. Scott Steiner Havoc or Mayhem? Shannon Moore & Shane Helms Vs. Yang & Kaz Hayashi Vs. Jamie Knoble & Evan Karagias Might include the ladder match from New Blood Rising as well. WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero, Jr. Vs. Shane Helms *nods* Shane Helms Vs. Yang Vs. Kaz Hayashi Vs. Shannon Moore Vs. Jamie Knoble Vs. Evan Karagias Good inclusion. Also, Chavo/Rey. Jason Jett Vs. Kwee Wee Elix Skipper & Kid Romeo Vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr. & Billy Kidman WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero, Jr. Vs. Shane Helms Steiner/DDP was a decent match and the last World title main event on PPV ever, so I might include that too.

Guest Loss Report post Posted December 21, 2004 Which brings up an interesting point. WCW looks like an amazing promotion when you only feature their best stuff, especially since their best matches were better than the WWF's best matches most of the time. Those of us who lived through WCW from start to finish are a little more aware of all the absolute crap we had to sift through to get those matches.

UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 Loss, thanks for the feedback. I actually compiled this by memory tonight. I'm a huge WCW mark. I can't believe I left off Dean/Eddie from Uncensored. Benoit/Sasaki is awful, BTW. Disco/Dean is good, not essential to me tho. Road Warriors/Sting+Booker didn't do it for me. Already WAY surpassed by the mid 90's garbage tag brawls. Flair/Eddie Road Wild 96 is awful. IMO, Benoit/Malenko is really really good, but the crowd makes me dislike it, and I think I can find better in WCW for those two. God, I hate biker crowds. No way on Calo/Rey and Konan/Juvy FB 96...tho I've only watched them each once. Nothing special.
BUTT 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 I really liked the Vader/Guardian Angel/Sting three-way from Fall Brawl '94. The Vader-Sting portion was really good, in my opinion, and the overtime periods really helped to build suspense for the finish. Sure, the ending was a little cheap, but they were trying to build up the "mystery man" angle, which could have been good had it not turned out to be Brutus Beefcake. Just John 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 Flair/Eddie Road Wild 96 is awful. IMO, Benoit/Malenko is really really good, but the crowd makes me dislike it, and I think I can find better in WCW for those two. God, I hate biker crowds. Yeah, I don't think there's anything essential about Flair/Eddie. Ok match, but nothing special. The crowd can't take away the fact that Benoit and Malenko put on a ****+ match. I don't think you'll find any better match between the two. They were on to something at Spring Stampede 97, but it was ruined by a clusterfuck ending. Also, people tend to hate the crowd for the reaction to this match (and they were horrible for this and Hogan/Giant), but overall it was a pretty good crowd. They were really into Rey/Ultimo, Eddy/Flair, Luger/Sting/Outsiders, and off the charts for Harlem Heat/Steiners. Really, I think booking was more to blame as neither Benoit or Malenko was established as a face or heel, and the ME was heel/heel. Anyway, back on subject... You should also include Ultimo/Rey from this show. IMO, it's better than their overrated WW3 encounter. Not to say WW3 was bad, but it was pretty much a squash. Ultimo hits impressive move after move, and I kept waiting for Rey to do something and he never did. Rey looked terrible (kayfabe wise) the whole match. As if we didn't know already but that proved there weren't too many true wrestling fans watching that night.
natey2k4 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2004 Alright.. Jean-Paul Levesque(Triple H) vs Alex Wright from Starrcade 1994 -- Some consider it a good match for two rookies, and I tend to agree. Not a **** classic but for two rookies it was very good. Plus it has Triple H busting out a Leg Lariat.. no joke. Oh and Triple H also jobs;) lol. Ricky Steamboat vs Brian Pillman from Halloween Havoc 1992 -- Very good match.. just has to be included. Both guys are just awesome. Ricky Steamboat vs Steve Austin from.. DAMN! I don't quite remember which PPV.. it was 94.. maybe Spring Stampede or Uncensored or something. VERY good match.. it went about 30 minutes I believe.. maybe longer. Brian Pillman vs Alex Wright from Great American Bash 1995 -- One of Wright's best matches ever. Some nice counters and decent mat work. Very good match. Rey vs Ultimo from World War 3 1996 -- One of the best matches ever to grace a WCW ring, nuff said. Alex Wright vs Ultimo from Fall Brawl 1997 -- Because of the Guerrero/Jericho match being so good.. this match tends to get very overlooked. Almost a **** match, do add it. The Boogie Knights(Wright/Disco) vs Natural Born Thrillers(Jindrak/O'Haire) vs The Filthy Animals (Rey/Kidman) from Halloween Havoc 2000 -- Probably the best non full cruiserweight match between the last year or so. Only about 12 minutes, but as I said... if you want something good thats not just cruiserweights during the final 6 months of WCW... this is the match. Yourself and Loss seem to have said just about everything else I would of added.

Guest Loss Report post Posted December 21, 2004 Great job mentioning Pillman/Wright. I forgot about that match. Brian was on a roll in '95. He was always athletically gifted, and he was always a better heel than face, and 1995-1996 looked to be him finally arriving after pulling it all together and becoming a great worker and intriguing character. Of course, we all know what happened from there.
