Nighthawk Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Progressive hardcore emoternative metal.
Nighthawk Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Drug record. Head Automatica is slightly better than Automator's team up with Mike Patton, which is an interesting turn of events.
Nevermortal Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Head Automatica makes me want to boogie-oogie-oogie.
TheBigSwigg Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I'd say the two most notable emo bands I listen to would be Juliana Theory and Matchbook Romance, the latter of whom I like quite a bit since having discovered them just a few months ago. Speaking of, I just noticed in passing that there's a tour coming to my area in a month or two that will feature The Juliana Theory and Zao on the same show. Now there's a combo. Brett Detar, lead singer and founder of Juliana Theory, used to play guitar for ZAO. After "Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest" he left to focus on The Juliana Theory. And Zack, check out Brandtson, you may like them.
Guest theanswer1824 Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 any of you guys believe this theory: Emo started right after Weezer's Pinkerton album? Comments y'all. I like weezer but I can't STAND that emo shit.
Youth N Asia Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 How did Pinkerton sell anyway? I enjoy the album, but didn't hear any airplay for it at all.
Guest theanswer1824 Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 i believe it didn't sell well when it first came out. it was critically acclaimed but sales didn't blow up right away. i believe a couple of years later (napster days) that's when the album blew up. the only reason why i ask this is because most 'emo' bands are heavily influenced by this particular album. and i've also read and heard the same theory other places as well. i hate the word emo. their even calling underground hiphop "emo-rap". sickening.
TheBigSwigg Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 any of you guys believe this theory: Emo started right after Weezer's Pinkerton album? Comments y'all. I like weezer but I can't STAND that emo shit. As far as I know, Embrace is credited with starting emo. In the 80's. No Shit.

Giuseppe Zangara Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Modern emo—the crappy, pussy shit being discussed in this thread—started with Pinkerton, though.

Giuseppe Zangara Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Hipsters know very little about music history, so don't worry.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Hipsters know very little about music history, so don't worry. So I am a hipster? Or am I nothing at all? worthless?
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 You are fucking invincible. No shit?!
PLAGIARISM! Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 I don't see the Pinkerton connection. It doesn't have the overproduction, speed or screaming present in modern emo.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 It does have the loud guitars and heart-on-sleeve lyrics that a lot of today's emo bands employ. However, Pinkerton—excepting the overly maudlin "Butterfly"—never gets too sappy, preferring to flirt with perversion ("Across the Sea"). I still like the album, but I never listen to it anymore. The first one was the best and will never be surpassed by the band.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Even "Butterfly" has that one line: "I smell you on my hand for days." Priceless. I don't listen to Pinkerton much anymore either, which is too bad. Ho hum.
CheesalaIsGood Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 Underoath-Changing of the Times was a very excellent stand out album. It certaintly wasn't emo in any shape or form as they were still mostly a metal/hardcore hybrid at this point. Their last cd with the generic new vocalist is rather bland and weak so I can understand people coming to the conclusion that they suck based off that. Avenaged Sevenfold are alright. I've heard far worse vocalists, however the lyrics are indeed cringe worthy. As far as emo goes, I like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral had a few good moments. They really don't have much in common with the other bands being listed as emo on this folder but you know. It's about time somebody mentioed Sunny Day Real Estate. Then again I never got past the first record. The rest can blow me but "Diary" is quite good. I must have got my fill of emo by that point cuz I don't own any other, unless you count The Sheila Devine.
SinToxic Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 Glassjaw is emo, progressive emo if that's ever possible. Indie rock and emo bands these days are becoming more and more similar or maybe they always were the same, so I ask thee question - is Nashville Pussy emo or just a band hungry to get on VH1?

Indie rock and emo bands these days are becoming more and more similar or maybe they always were the same, so I ask thee question - is Nashville Pussy emo or just a band hungry to get on VH1? Not even close to Emo. They (Nashville Pussy) are kind of a beer drinking, AC/DC type of garage band. They destroyed everybody from the 2nd stage of the Tattoo the Earth show I went to at Suffolk Downs in Boston. They ain't emo.
Guest theanswer1824 Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Modern emo—the crappy, pussy shit being discussed in this thread—started with Pinkerton, though. hit in right on the nail there for me. fugazi is considered emo?! really?! fuck man, it's hard to tell what's indie and what's emo. emo to me is bitching about your loved one leaving you and being a pussy about it. indie to me is a more 'fuck you, this is how we're gonna make out music,'. when did the lines get blurred?
The Czech Republic Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 I've never thought of indie as a style of music, just a catch-all term for stuff that's not on a major record label.
Coffin Surfer Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Glassjaw is emo, progressive emo if that's ever possible. Glassjaw aren't emo by any definition and they certaintly are't progressive. You might as well start calling the Deftones emo. A line has to be drawn somewhere. Besides actual emo like Sunny Day Real Estate did have a progressive rock influence so it's not that far fetched. It's about time somebody mentioed Sunny Day Real Estate. Then again I never got past the first record. The rest can blow me but "Diary" is quite good. Diary is probably my favorite, their last album was decent though. fugazi is considered emo?! really?! Of course not. Fugazi were more post-punk than anything. They have little in common with what was emo and what is now mislabeled as emo.

Quoting myself, from 2 pages ago: And, technically, Rites of Spring existed years before Embrace, and are considered the first Emo band.
Special K Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Fuck, I can't believe what people are calling emo around here. Fugazi? WTF? Of course, it all gets hazy when someone comes up with a buzzword for a new subgenre. Anyone remember what alternative was? Every single rock band in the 90's was considered alternative. Rage was alternative. Crash Test Dummies, Alternative. Pearl Jam? Alternative. These bands had nothing in common. Is Death Cab for Cutie emo? Because they're pretty good.
Red Baron Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Why don't we just labbel Iron Maiden as a hair-metal band...(morons for people in my class)
