I'd say the two most notable emo bands I listen to would be Juliana Theory and Matchbook Romance, the latter of whom I like quite a bit since having discovered them just a few months ago.

Speaking of, I just noticed in passing that there's a tour coming to my area in a month or two that will feature The Juliana Theory and Zao on the same show.

 

Now there's a combo.

Brett Detar, lead singer and founder of Juliana Theory, used to play guitar for ZAO. After "Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest" he left to focus on The Juliana Theory.

How did Pinkerton sell anyway? I enjoy the album, but didn't hear any airplay for it at all.

i believe it didn't sell well when it first came out. it was critically acclaimed but sales didn't blow up right away. i believe a couple of years later (napster days) that's when the album blew up.

 

the only reason why i ask this is because most 'emo' bands are heavily influenced by this particular album. and i've also read and heard the same theory other places as well.

 

i hate the word emo. their even calling underground hiphop "emo-rap". sickening.

I don't see the Pinkerton connection. It doesn't have the overproduction, speed or screaming present in modern emo.

It does have the loud guitars and heart-on-sleeve lyrics that a lot of today's emo bands employ. However, Pinkerton—excepting the overly maudlin "Butterfly"—never gets too sappy, preferring to flirt with perversion ("Across the Sea").

 

I still like the album, but I never listen to it anymore. The first one was the best and will never be surpassed by the band.

Underoath-Changing of the Times was a very excellent stand out album. It certaintly wasn't emo in any shape or form as they were still mostly a metal/hardcore hybrid at this point. Their last cd with the generic new vocalist is rather bland and weak so I can understand people coming to the conclusion that they suck based off that.

 

Avenaged Sevenfold are alright. I've heard far worse vocalists, however the lyrics are indeed cringe worthy.

 

As far as emo goes, I like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral had a few good moments. They really don't have much in common with the other bands being listed as emo on this folder but you know.

It's about time somebody mentioed Sunny Day Real Estate. Then again I never got past the first record. The rest can blow me but "Diary" is quite good. I must have got my fill of emo by that point cuz I don't own any other, unless you count The Sheila Devine.

Not even close to Emo. They (Nashville Pussy) are kind of a beer drinking, AC/DC type of garage band. They destroyed everybody from the 2nd stage of the Tattoo the Earth show I went to at Suffolk Downs in Boston. They ain't emo.

Glassjaw aren't emo by any definition and they certaintly are't progressive. You might as well start calling the Deftones emo. A line has to be drawn somewhere.

 

Besides actual emo like Sunny Day Real Estate did have a progressive rock influence so it's not that far fetched.

Fuck, I can't believe what people are calling emo around here. Fugazi? WTF? Of course, it all gets hazy when someone comes up with a buzzword for a new subgenre. Anyone remember what alternative was? Every single rock band in the 90's was considered alternative. Rage was alternative. Crash Test Dummies, Alternative. Pearl Jam? Alternative. These bands had nothing in common.

 

Is Death Cab for Cutie emo? Because they're pretty good.
