BifEverchad 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 This thread is dedicated to, agruabley, everyones favorite Pay Per View of the year. The Royal Rumble is always an exciting show that has a distinct feel and build-up to it. It always delivers in one way or another and has a few, or at least one, memorable moment from every year. So, with this year's show scheduled for next week, I figured I'd start this thread so we could all discuss our favorite matches and moments of the last 17 WWE Royal Rumbles... Here's a few quick Royal Rumble facts: 1) Stone Cold has the most Royal Rumble wins with three. 2) Big Show is the only Superstar to be the last man eliminated on two occasions. 3) The luckiest number to draw is No. 27 as that Superstar has won four times. 4) Drawing No. 30 is seen as a huge advantage, but the Superstar to draw No. 30 has never won the Royal Rumble. 5) It is seen as a huge disadvantage to draw No. 1, but the Superstar to draw No. 1 has won twice. 6) Tito Santana and Bret "Hit Man" Hart were the first-ever Royal Rumble participants. 7) "The Natural" Butch Reed was the first-ever WWE Superstar eliminated. 8) Jake "The Snake" Roberts recorded the first elimination in Royal Rumble history. 9) The second Royal Rumble in 1989 was actually the first Royal Rumble to appear on Pay-Per-View. 10) Ax and Smash of Demolition drew numbers 1 and 2, proving that it’s every man for himself. 11) 1991 was Undertaker’s first Royal Rumble, and he recorded three eliminations before being ousted by Legion of Doom. 12) Bushwhacker Luke was eliminated in three seconds in 1991, which is a record for shortest time spent in the ring. 13) Hulk Hogan became the first Superstar to win two Royal Rumbles when he won in 1990 & 1991. 14) The 1992 Royal Rumble was the first and only time that the WWE Heavyweight Championship was on the line – Ric Flair entered at No. 3 and outlasted every Superstar to become WWE Champion. 15) Yokozuna recorded 7 eliminations during the 1993 Royal Rumble, which set a new record. 16) At the 1994 Royal Rumble, Diesel cleaned house and tied the record, recording 7 eliminations (all consecutively). It then took five Superstars to get rid of the big man. 17) Lex Luger and Bret “Hit Man” Hart both hit the floor at exactly the same time at the 1994 Royal Rumble as they were named as the first ever co-winners. 18) Shawn Michaels became the first Superstar to enter at No. 1 and win the Royal Rumble in 1995 – the final two Superstars ended up being the first two to enter as British Bulldog was eliminated by Michaels. 19) Shawn Michaels became the second Superstar to win two Royal Rumbles when he won in 1996. 20) In 1997, Stone Cold became the first Superstar to be eliminated, but still win the Royal Rumble – the referees did not see when he was eliminated, so he snuck back in and recorded the winning elimination when he tossed Bret “Hit Man” Hart. 21) Mick Foley became the first Superstar to enter the Royal Rumble three different times in 1998 as Cactus Jack entered at No. 1, Mankind entered at No. 16 and Dude Love entered at No. 28. 22) Stone Cold became the third Superstar to win the Royal Rumble twice in 1998. 23) Mr. McMahon made his only Royal Rumble appearance in 1999 and made the most of it as he won, eliminating Stone Cold with some help from The Rock and his Corporation. 24) In 2000, Rikishi tied the record for most eliminations, dumping 7 Superstars. 25) The Rock won his only Royal Rumble in 2000. 26) Drew Carrey became the first celebrity entrant into the Royal Rumble in 2001 – he eliminated himself after being scared off by Kane. 27) Kane recorded a new record, which still stands today, of 10 eliminations in 2001. He also recorded an additional elimination with the help of Undertaker. 28) Stone Cold set a new record in 2001, winning his third Royal Rumble. 29) Maven shocked the world in 2002, eliminating The Undertaker. 30) Triple H won his only Royal Rumble in 2002 after he eliminated Kurt Angle. 31) Tommy Dreamer brought weapons with him to the ring, bringing a hardcore flavor to the Rumble in 2003 for the first time. 32) Chris Benoit became the second person at No. 1 to win the Royal Rumble (when Shawn Michaels did it, though, there were only 60 seconds in between entrants compared with the two minutes in 2004). Here's a few quick questions: - Favorite Royal Rumble match? - Favorite Royal Rumble event? - Favorite non-Royal Rumble match? - Favorite WWE Championship match at the Rumble? - Favorite non-WWE Royal Rumble entrant? - Who will win the 2005 WWE Royal Rumble? King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 31) Tommy Dreamer brought weapons with him to the ring, bringing a hardcore flavor to the Rumble in 2003 for the first time. Wrong. 2001 featured weapons when Raven entered. And...there's already a thread in Gen. Wrestling. All the same, I think Cena's winning the Rumble. EDIT: (when Shawn Michaels did it, though, there were only 60 seconds in between entrants compared with the two minutes in 2004). It was 1 1/2 minutes I think. Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 12) Bushwhacker Luke was eliminated in three seconds in 1991, which is a record for shortest time spent in the ring. Warlord was out shorter in 1989 when he stepped in and was promptly clotheslined out by Hogan. But it still isn't the record. That belongs to Mo in 1995 who flat out ran to the ring and ran right out in less than 3 seconds. Luke was 4.2 seconds I believe, and Warlord was at around 3 seconds. Mo holds the record. My other answers are all in the other thread, but I might as well restate them here. - Favorite Royal Rumble match? 1992 - Favorite Royal Rumble event? 2000 - Favorite non-Royal Rumble match? Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle, 2003 - Favorite WWE Championship match at the Rumble? Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle, 2003 - Favorite non-WWE Royal Rumble entrant? cawthon777 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 Benoit's length in last years rumble should be in that list of factoids. I'd also like to see a top ten of Royal Rumble "iron men" From memory - The Ironmen of the Rumble: 88 - Bret 89 - Perfect 90 - Dibiase 91 - Martel (with Valentine a close second, IIRC) 92 - Flair 93 - Backlund 94 - either HBK or Bigelow 95 - HBK / Bulldog 96 - HHH (with Bob Holly a close second) My memory gets fuzzy after there. Benoit holds the record at 1:01:34. Backlund is the 1st runner up at 1:01:10 (93). Flair is third but I haven't yet sat through the whole match to time everything out. And since we're talking about Rumbles, here are a few of the forgotten ones. WWF @ St. Louis, MO - Arena - October 4, 1987 The One Man Gang won a Royal Rumble when both he and the Junkyard Dog went over the top at the same time after 12 minutes; pre-match stipulations stated the winner would earn a world title shot for the next show in St. Louis on 11/7 but OMG's title shot was announced during intermission, angering fans credit: The Observer Meltzer claims the first winner was JYD so maybe there is a Rumble that predates the 87 version. Btw, the St. Louis Rumble apparently blew. WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - January 17, 1994 (9,000) Owen Hart won a 30-man Royal Rumble match at 1:10:17 by last eliminating Fatu; order of entry: Diesel, Mo, Butch, the 1-2-3 Kid (the Kid suffered a leg injury from his elimination which caused him to miss the PPV Rumble), Scott Steiner, Iron Mike Sharpe, Samu, Bob Backlund, Jeff Jarrett, Virgil, Bam Bam Bigelow, Randy Savage, Adam Bomb, Sgt. Slaughter, Crush, Mabel, Jim Powers, Bastion Booger, Luke, Owen Hart, Rick Martel, Bret Hart, IRS, Johnny Polo, Scott Putski, Fatu, Marty Jannetty, Bart Gunn, Shawn Michaels, and Doink the Clown; the final four men in the ring were Shawn Michaels, Bret, Owen, and Samu; Bret was eliminated after Fatu returned ringside; Michaels was eliminated after Razor Ramon came ringside; after the bout, Bret returned ringside to fight off the Headshrinkers and celebrate Owen's victory WWF @ Osaka, Japan - Osaka Castle Hall - May 9, 1994 The Undertaker won an 18-man Royal Rumble match by eliminating Bam Bam Bigelow at 46:15; participants included (in order of entry): Rick Martel, Bob Backlund, Jinsei Shinzaki, Adam Bomb, 1-2-3 Kid, Masashi Aoyagi, Tatanka, Billy Gunn, Nobukazu Hirai, Bart Gunn, Owen Hart, Bam Bam Bigelow, Randy Savage, Samu, the Undertaker, Fatu, Bret Hart, & Doink the Clown USWA @ Memphis, TN - January 3, 1996 Doug Gilbert won a Royal Rumble match; due to pre-match stipulations, Gilbert earned a spot in the WWF's Royal Rumble on 1/21 in Fresno WWF @ White Plains, NY - Westchester County Civic Center - November 20, 1996 (2,075) Rocky Miavia won a 20-man Royal Rumble match - Yep. Rocky debuts on the 17th and wins a Rumble 3 days later. FMW @ Kawasaki, Japan - Kawasaki Stadium - September 28, 1997 Tetsuhiro Kuroda won a 12-man Royal Rumble match at 28:49; other participants included Flying Kid Ichihara, Ricky Fuji, the Headhunters, Hideko Hosaka, Koji Nakagawa, Alexander Otsuka, Mr. Pogo II, Super Leather, & Minoru Tanaka - Not WWF, I know. I only mentioned it because it hosted the Shamrock / Vader no holds barred match and both of those guys were under contract at the time. And then of course the Smackdown Rumble from last year. The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 Didn't Kane go something like 40 minutes in...shit. 2001? 2002? Whichever Rumble it was that he lasted a long time in. Bob Backlund should be in every Royal Rumble that he's physically capable of being in from now until the end of time. Honestly, when Benoit won, I was angry that he broke Backlund's record. Best RR participant ever. Some of my favourite RR moments include Backlund being one of the guys that Diesel slaughtered during the original Diesel push, and the end of the '93 RR. It's just that moment when the camera shows Backlund, and he's got this totally glazed look in his eyes, he appears to be dead, but then he looks around with this look of surprise (I'm still in the royal rumble? SWEET!) before attacking Yokozuna.

(I can't really remember) 04 - Benoit (of course!) --99 you could count Vince officially as the ironman, though he spent 99% of the match on the outside of the ring. If you went with guys that actually spent the full time IN the ring, it's Bossman, who came in at #22 (that's pretty sad), who lasted a whopping 18:53. -2000, the Ironman award goes to Test, who entered at #10 and lasted 26:17. --2001, Kane lasted over 53:00 to easily take it. --2002 goes to Austin, who entered #19 and lasted 26:46. --2003 it's Jericho at 38:54, with RVD second at over 32 minutes. JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 1994 was Bigelow, who lasted over 30 minutes, one minute more than Shawn. Someone asked for the top 10 Ironmen: 1)Chris Benoit 61:30 2004 2) Bob Backlund 61:10 1993 3) Ric Flair 59:26 1992 4) Kane 53:46 2001 5) Rick Martel 52:17 1991 6) Rocky Maivia 51:32 1998 7) HHH 48:01 1996 8) Steve Austin 45:07 1997 9) Ted DiBiase 44:47 1990 10) Greg Valentine 44:03 1991 If you want to count Austin and Vince from 1999, they'd be tied at #4, and then you'd bump Dibiase and Valentine off the list. Guest Astro Report post Posted January 23, 2005 Kane recorded a new record, which still stands today, of 10 eliminations in 2001. He also recorded an additional elimination with the help of Undertaker. ------------- Didn't Hogan have 10 in the 89 Rumble, and then 11 when he cheated to help Brutus after Hulk had been tossed? CanadianChick 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 03) Chris Jericho I always hated that he got eliminated earlier than necessary. And pretty much right after he was eliminated, the Rumble started the suck. The first half of '03 is excellent. The second half sucked.

CanadianChick 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2005 Right! Well, it was quite appropriate for one half to be good and the other half to suck. Afterall, one title match was great, and the other was, well, not.

I'll have to go back and watch it, but I seriously remember this as stated. Order of elimination: Perfect by Hogan after throwing Perfect into the corner (32:37) Koko by Hogan via a backdrop (37:32) Luke by Hogan (37:45) Anderson & Blanchard by Hogan via a double clothesline (38:26) the Warlord by Hogan via a clothesline (38:43) Savage & Bad News by Hogan (38:48), afterwards, Savage argued the elimination with Hogan until Miss Elizabeth came to the ring to settle things down and have the two shake hands Bossman via Hogan, who was still at ringside, pulling down the top rope as Bossman ran the ropes (45:00) So that's a total of 9. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2005 I miss the old Royal Rumble Updates where they'd run down all the participants. They need to bring back that and the retro music. Seriously, Cena should become World Champ and hold it for a year *just* so he can bring back the Retro PPV theme music.

JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2005 This year will be the 1st RRumble that Pat Patterson doesn't have a hand in booking, and from WWE's own press, Pat was the innovator behind the match. PWInsider said Pat was involved in a creative meeting recently, so maybe he'll help out. So aside from the winners, guys like Benoit, Flair, etc, and the ironmen like Kane, Martel, and so on, who are the guys that stole the show for you in Rumbles past? Matt Hardy in 2003 is a good example of one. Who else stole the show in your mind, even if they didn't win or last the longest?
