I kind of like the red colored jerseys. I like Louisville's colors too. I mean I know they aren't changing the red but the red pants and just plain red jersey are kind of cool.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but the St. Louis Browns preceded the St. Louis Cardinals. The St. Louis Brown Stockings first appeared in the National Association in 1875. The current Cardinals were actually the former Browns until 1898, when they changed their name to the Perfectos for one season, and then to the Cardinals in 1900. The team commonly known as the Browns debuted in St. Louis in 1902, before moving to Baltimore in 1953.

 

The football Browns first appeared in 1950, and my guess is that they were named after Head Coach Paul Brown. The football Cardinals of course are one of only two teams that have played in the NFL since its inception. They started in Chicago, moved to St. Louis in 1960, and moved to Phoenix in 1988.

Small correction: The Cleveland Browns began in 1946 in the old All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The AAFC lasted only four seasons (1946-49) and the Browns won all four championships of the defunct league. The Browns, along with the Baltimore Colts and San Francisco 49ers, joined the NFL in 1950. They had most of the same team for the next 6 years, went to the NFL championship in each of those years, and won 3 of them.

 

And yes, the Browns were named after Paul Brown.

 

As for the Cardinals, believe it or not, they were known first as the Racine Cardinals. They actually used "Racine" because they were located on Racine Avenue in Chicago. They switched to Chicago Cardinals in 1920, but Racine Cardinals is the team's inaugural name from 1898 to 1920.

The Cardinals won their lone known NFL Championship in 1947. Their only other NFL Championship was a heavily disputed one in 1925:

 

Led by Paddy Driscoll, the Cardinals won a disputed championship in 1925. The controversy arose out of a December 6 game at Chicago between the Cardinals and the Pottsville Maroons that was hyped by O'Brien and the Chicago newspapers as being for the NFL championship.

 

The Cardinals were 9-1-1 going into the game, while Pottsville was 9-2-0. The Maroons won the game, 21-7, and considered themselves league champions as a result. A week later, though, NFL President Joe Carr declared that the Pottsville franchise had been forfeited because the team played a game against the Notre Dame All-Stars in Philadelphia, thus invading the territory of the Frankford Yellow Jackets.

 

Meanwhile. O'Brien desperately wanted a game against the Chicago Bears during their barnstorming tour with Red Grange. To keep the team intact, and to pad its record, he scheduled two more games, against the Milwaukee Badgers and the Hammond Pros. The Cardinals won both games, running their record to 11-2-1. That was good enough to win the league championship over Pottsville, which finished at 10-2-0, but it didn't really matter, since Pottsville was no longer in the league.

 

Nevertheless, the Maroons and their fans insisted they had won the title. Because of the controversy, O'Brien refused to accept the championship, but the Cardinals went into the NFL record books as 1925 champions, anyway.

O'Brien, btw, is Chris O'Brien, a painting contractor, who was the organizer and manager of the Cardinals since inauguration. So basically, the very top guy of the organization refused the championship under those circumstances.

Cards Brush Up Bird

 

Associated Press, TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals have given their old bird a makeover.

 

The Cardinal head that has served as the team's logo since 1960 -- when the franchise moved from Chicago to St. Louis -- has been subtly transformed into a sleeker, meaner creature. The updated version was unveiled with great fanfare at Cardinals headquarters on Thursday.

 

"A tough bird," team owner Bill Bidwill said. "Hopefully it will be worn by tougher and faster and meaner players."

 

Yet to come is what Cardinals vice president Michael Bidwill called "a revolutionary" change in the team's uniforms, to be shown this spring.

 

The old Cardinal logo was a roundhead bird derisively referred to as a "parakeet." The new version has decidedly more evil eyes and a menacing expression.

 

"The outline is in black," Michael Bidwill said. "We've made the beak much more predatory and much more aggressive. The face is much more streamlined. It's faster looking. The eye has been described as mean, we'll say tough. We've taken tail feathers and given them speed, as well."

 

The new beak is gold, while the old one was yellow.

 

"As they say, it's not the size of the bird in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the bird," coach Dennis Green said. "The cardinal is a small bird, but it can be a very aggressive bird. That's the idea."

 

Several prominent Cardinals -- including Josh McCown, Larry Fitzgerald and Leonard Davis -- modeled apparel with the new logo.

 

With his rural Texas background, McCown was asked if he was something of an expert on shape of birds and shape of bird heads.

 

"The only birds I know about are the duck and the dove and the quail, birds that you shoot," the Cardinals quarterback said. "You're not really supposed to shoot cardinals. I don't know if I'd shoot this bird. It looks pretty mean. This bird might pull a gun out and shoot right back at you."

 

The changes are part of the team's preparation for its move into a new stadium, set for completion by the 2006 season opener. Defensive end Bertrand Berry will wear the new logo in next month's Pro Bowl.

I have a question about the Cardinals' stadium: How are the seats going to be? Because, and I may sound silly here, but I think a big reason for the Cards' lack of attendance is the big, shiny metal benches that are used as seats in the stadium. In fact, they take up a good chunkload of the stadium. Imagine the Arizona sun and heat shining onto those things and how THAT would feel when you're sitting there! I remember on Countdown one time, on the Mayne Event, they had a cute feature about those seats, and how you could almost literally fry eggs on them. Surely, the seats in the new stadium have got to be better than this!

I don't like the additional white stripe on the sleeves. Additionals like these on jerseys make them look like Arena League-level jerseys. The rest of the two jerseys look sharp, but lose that white stripe. Less is more.

The white stripes on the sleeves look kinda crappy there, but from a side view when the jersey is on, my assumption is that it's supposed to mimic the Arizona state flag:

I disagree. The Ravens' all-black uniform is pretty cool, and I can dig it when Carolina does the same in either of their colors. Same with the Dolphins.

-The striping on the pants

-The shade of red

-And, uhh, the Card's logo will appear above the players names on the back of the jerseys.

-And, well that's about it.
