Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 I was searching through Netflix and came across this: http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?trkid=...ovieid=70004548 I thought it was weird that Battle Royale had been released, and especially without having heard about it before hand, since it seemed like it was never going to get released in the states. So I looked it up on Video ETA, Amazon.com and DVD Aficionado, and there's no info about a US release. So is Netflix starting to release different region DVDs now? If not, what's the deal with this? RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 I saw it in a video store up here in Mississauga, and there were plenty on display (BR and BRII). It surprised me.
Special K 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 Check it. Thank God I live near Scarecrow. According to Amazon, it hasn't been released, and all the DVDs listed here are region 0 (will work on US DVD player) I can attest that the translation's good, and they're not bootlegs, as I've rented it twice from there. Pricey though. This is probably what you get from Netflix.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 but those are foreign release DVDs, which I was under the impression Netflix didn't carry. If they are, one would think they'd have said something to SOMEONE (like, say, the customers). Cause you can get Battle Royale from online stores (pokerindustries.com, scarecrow, etc), but not on Amazon or anything because it hasn't actually been released in the US...I think...I don't know anymore... NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 www.DVDAsian.com has the region free 2-disc set of Battle Royale 1 & 2. No need to wait around for a US release.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 apparently someone has already released them in the US. Hence, this thread.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 I really enjoy how people are just completely missing the point of this thread.

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 well I understood the point of the thread, but I was just saying if the thread starter doesn't want to wait any longer, there are options to buy the 2-disc set that will play on american dvd players.
Special K 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 Didn't know Netflix doesn't carry Region 0. This is indeed odd. Upon some searching, I read that Toei refused to liscense it for the U.S. for fear of controversy. Perhaps Netflix received enough requests to get the Region 0? Nevermortal 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 Apparently a shitload of people want to rent it. I just added it to my queue and it's status is "VERY LONG WAIT".
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2005 I wouldn'y even bother touching an american release anyway, by the time the MPAA butchers it all to hell.
Special K 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2005 Says it's unrated. Whether that means it will be released unrated or the MPAA just hasn't gotten to it, we shall see.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2005 Apparently a shitload of people want to rent it. I just added it to my queue and it's status is "VERY LONG WAIT". True. So's the bonus disc. BUT, it doesn't say Very Long Wait: Out Of Print. This means they still have copies. And I'd heard about them not wanting to liscense the movie to be released in the US, which was the main reason I was so confused about this. I thought about them having R0, but I haven't found any other such DVDs so far. This is weird.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2005 battleroyalefilms.net has a story on it Battle Royale on Netflix: The American online rental service Netflix has, for some reason, added BR to its library, even though there is no R1 release of the title. The picture in its listing is of the UK PAL Special Edition by Tartan, which will not play on many American DVD players, which adds to the confusion. If you're one of the lucky people who has this coming to your mailbox (there's currently a long wait for the title), please let us know which version it turns out to be--the speculation ranges from the highly unlikely scenario that Tartan (which has recently opened a U.S. division) has quietly acquired U.S. release rights and released the film with no press whatsoever, to Netflix now adding import R0 NTSC titles to its library (either a bootleg, the R0 NTSC Korean Special Edition, or the R0 NTSC Tartan UK Original Version). The regular disc is down to long wait, but the bonus disc is available now, I'll be getting it this week hopefully
CheesalaIsGood 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2005 Hmmm. I bought it this week and it looks like a US release. Its still pretty damn gory. Anything notable I should expect to have been cut out? The running time on my DVD stands at 109 minutes. Is there a longer version?
Insane Bump Machine 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2005 What region is it? Runtimes: 114 min / Japan:122 min (director's cut) / South Korea:122 min (director's cut) It could still be the normal uncut version because of the fps difference between PAL and NTSC, depending on what region you have. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 why has this not been released in the US anyway? is it the concept of "kids" killing "kids"? Surely it's not the level of violence keeping it away? I haven't seen this movie yet and would like to, but I'm not going through this and that just to rent it...

Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 Rip, I just wanna know what the hype is all about...I've seen stills and clips and wasn't really impressed nor did I see the reason why it is banned here, but I want to see the actual movie in it's entirety... Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 The book and the manga are better than the movie (and I usually hate manga), but the movie's ok in kind of a Troma meets Rocky Horror sort of way.
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 it's not banned here. If it were, they wouldn't have the book or manga, and something like Suicide Circle certainly wouldn't be released here. It's not been released in the States because the people who own the rights won't sign off on it. BL: It's about a 9th grade class put on an island and being forced to kill each other until only one person is left as part of a government program.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 I saw a Guinea Pig box set in Best Buy. Nothing is banned anymore.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 The book and the manga are better than the movie (and I usually hate manga), but the movie's ok in kind of a Troma meets Rocky Horror sort of way. I *know* there's a live action movie, but isn't there an anime too, and which one(s) are unavailable here?
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 I've never heard of an anime. I'd watch it if there were, even though I like anime less than manga.
