Well, good thing someone else bumped this because I wasn't gonna just for this... but...

It looks like the Marlins might have found someone to take Encarnacion off their hands. According to ESPN.com, the Pirates are interested. Don't know who the Marlins would get, but it doesn't matter.

Although, who backs up Pizza Met fans?

I'm not a Met fan but i've been following them a bit and Ramon Castro has done a good job.

Mets close to getting Ishii from the Dodgers for Jason Phillips.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2017021

Good trade for the Mets. Ishii isn't great, or even good, but getting him to give the bullpen or rotation backup for just JASON PHILLIPS, isn't too bad.

Although, who backs up Pizza Met fans?

Best line about the trade...

"Zambrano and Ishii in the same rotation? To see four balls more often, you'll have to go rent a gay porno."

Three of the Mets' starters have K/BB ratios of less than two. I can't see the Mets getting anywhere with that rotation. I would rather take the Athletics' three rookies than a back-end of Kris Benson, Victor Zambrano, and Ishii.

the Mets/Dodgers deal is official

Ishii will replace Trachsel in Mets' rotation

Associated Press

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The New York Mets plugged a hole in their starting rotation Sunday, acquiring left-hander Kazuhisa Ishii from the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher Jason Phillips.

The Mets traded for Ishii to fill the void created when they lost Steve Trachsel to a back injury this spring. Trachsel, who made 33 starts for New York last season, had surgery Saturday to repair a herniated disc and will miss at least three to six months.

Ishii will step into the No. 5 spot in the rotation behind Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano.

Ishii went 13-8 with a 4.71 ERA in 31 starts last season for Los Angeles. Often erratic, he walked 98 batters in 172 innings. He is 36-25 with a 4.30 ERA in three seasons with the Dodgers since coming over from Japan.

A backup to Mike Piazza with the Mets, Phillips could become the Dodgers' starting catcher. Los Angeles has been looking for an answer behind the plate because neither incumbent David Ross nor newcomer Paul Bako is known for providing much offense.

Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta has said Bako will make the 25-man roster out of spring training. Phillips' addition makes Ross' future uncertain.

Because of injuries, Phillips got a chance to play regularly with the Mets in 2003 and was a pleasant surprise, hitting .298 with 11 home runs and 58 RBI. But last season his numbers dropped to .218 with seven homers and 34 RBI in 362 at-bats.

He is having a terrific spring, leading New York with a .550 batting average (11-for-20). He has one home run, four doubles and nine RBI.

Ross also had a breakout season in 2003 but hit just .170 last season. He is hitless in spring training.

Ishii is set to make $3.2 million this year with an option for 2006 that can be bought out for $2.2 million. Phillips will earn $339,000 this season.

Eric Gagne's clearly hurting on the mound right now, but they've yet to yank him. I question the logic behind keeping him on the mound in a spring training game in this condition.

Barry Zito may have recaptured some of his magic from a few years ago, as he has been impressive in all but one of his spring starts. The A's pounded the Giants 17-3 yesterday in front of a sellout crowd (Approx 10,000)

Something that caught my eye for Blue Jays fans.  Toronto optioned Guillermo Quiroz to Syracuse.  It looks like its Gregg Zaun and Greg Myers behind the plate.

Good or bad?

Indifferent really. Quiroz is the future, but he's probably not ready. Myers and Zaun should at least hold down the fort in the meantime.

I see, do you have any opinions of him as a prospect, and what his potential might be?

I have a real question for you man; how are you so knowledgable about baseball in general. Is it a purely statistical thing, as in you work off of that to evaluate players or do you have a knowledge of the game itself, like you can tell the subtle differences between players that mainly experience would tell you? Stuff like noticing nuances in a pitcher's form or the sweetness of a swing, etc. Have you ever thought about making a living doing something in baseball, anywhere from writing to helping out a team themselves? It's a shame that you're wasting your skills, if you have them, because I wouldn't know that much, on the other baseball folk here at TSM. It's a nice gesture, but surely if you could you'd have much more fun working with the game.

Orioles' DuBose arrested for DUI

Left-handed pitcher released on $500 bond after being pulled over in Sarasota

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Orioles pitcher Eric DuBose was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Monday morning in Sarasota, Fla., before making a start later that day at the team's minor league complex. He was released on $500 bond.

DuBose, 28, was arrested at 1:17 a.m. after an officer on foot patrol observed the pitcher's black GMC truck swerving into an oncoming lane, according to the Sarasota County police report. DuBose also came close to rear-ending another vehicle, the report said.

Deputy T.W. Shirley contacted another officer, who pulled over DuBose's vehicle. Shirley identified DuBose as the driver.

According to the report, Deputy David Clark Jr. saw DuBose's truck swerve across the yellow line three times. Clark noted that DuBose's speech was slurred, and the pitcher exhibited poor balance, had watery and blood-shot eyes and an "odor of alcoholic beverage."

The report states DuBose informed Clark he had "a couple" drinks at the Cafe Gardens and Daquiri Deck in Sarasota. When instructed to recite the alphabet, DuBose allegedly said, "I'm from Alabama, and they have a different alphabet."

DuBose's alcohol level registered at .113 more than an hour after being stopped. The legal limit in Florida is .08.

DuBose was booked at 1:47 a.m. and released at 10:28 a.m. He pitched six innings later that afternoon against a collection of minor league players while the Orioles had the day off.

DuBose must appear in court on April 13 for his arraignment while the Orioles are in the middle of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He arrived at Fort Lauderdale Stadium Tuesday morning, but had permission to skip the workout and exhibition game against the Devil Rays because he pitched on Monday. DuBose wasn't available to comment on the arrest, and the team didn't issue a statement.

"From our standpoint, it's a personal matter and we're not going to comment," club spokesman Bill Stetka said.

DuBose's agent, James McGinnis, didn't return calls to The Sun.

Trying to make the team as a fifth starter or left-hander in the bullpen, DuBose is 1-0 with a 5.63 ERA this spring. He began last season in the rotation but underwent surgery on July 1 to remove bone chips and spurs from his left elbow.

The jury is still out on Quiroz as a hitting prospect. He broke through in 2003 with a huge season, but he really struggled in 2004. He looks like an Ernie Whitt-type player, which is not a bad thing. Regardless of his offense, Quiroz is an excellent defensive catcher. I'd rather take Quiroz right now then I would take Mike Matheny or Brad Ausmus.

I do not have any real skills that you might associate with major league scouts, in that regard. My interests in baseball are mainly analytical and writing. It is something I would like to do with a living, but right now I am in college, and still working on my education.

More cuts. The Yankees released OF Doug Glanville, freeing him up for a job with the Devil Rays. I hope he retires and joins the Phillies' broadcast team. He's not a good player anymore, but he is a great person. The Devil Rays released SP Denny Neagle and OF Tom Goodwin.

I'll put $20 on Bubba Crosby... no reason, just a guess. Was Neagle cut from the Devil Rays because of poor performances, or his little situation in the off-season with the prostitute? (2:1 odds it's because of performance)

That'd be pretty stupid to fire him for the prostitute incident considering it happened before they hired him.

He pitched three innings, surrendering four runs and eight hits. One strikeout, zero walks. It seems premature to cut him, but I guess the Devil Rays didn't want the bother to see if he would work out, and Neagle likely would not want an assignment to AAA Durham.

It wouldn't be completely out of the question... didn't one team last year hire a manager, then fire him the next day because of some problem in his past? (I'm blanking, so sorry for being so vague)

The Diamondbacks and the Wally Backman fiasco. His troubles did not come to light until after his hiring, as far as I recall. It is a shame, because I think Backman would have made a great manager.

Anyone else thinks it's ridiculous that the Astros are likely to start Craig Biggio at second base this year and thus either send Chris Burke back down to the minors AGAIN or play him in the outfield, a position he's never played as a pro?

Yes. I have a ton of respect for Biggio as a player, but Burke is one of the few bright spots, and he should not be blocked.

Biggio is rumored to be someone who complains, if things don't go his way.

On a related rookie note. Jason Bartless has all but won the Twins starting SS job.
