Major props to the Aviator for staying up on the top ten for so long. Oscar buzz helps, but not like it doesn't deserve it.

I haven't even heard of this "Diary of a Mad Black Woman". What is it?

I didn't hear about it either. Box Office Guru predicted something like $8 million for it.

I believe the above average reviews, coupled with a title that will instantly lures the black audience, was the big reason for it. It doesn't even have a big star attached to it.

I saw a preview for it on the Lifetime channel as I was passing through. I thought it wouldn't even hit the top 10.

EDIT - No, I don't watch the lifetime channel (well, only when Unsolved Mysteries or Goodfellas is on), but someone else in my family does.

It's an adaptation of a play by Tyler Perry about this chick whose husband is cheating on her. The play would be watchable if it weren't a musical.

It's apparently really popular around the school I go to (I don't much care for it)

Next week:

1. Be Cool - $32mil, although I wouldn't be surprised if it made a little more.

2. The Pacifier - $18-22mil, YEAH THAT'S WHAT I SAID.

3. Hitch

4. Diary Of A Mad Black Woman

5. Million Dollar Baby

Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator will probably move up due to the Oscars.

I actually thought "Diary" would come in first and would have been shocked if it hadn't. As someone said, it is based on one of several plays about some old black woman named Madea. I had never heard of them until this past summer when a girl I worked with mentioned them. Apparently they are VERY popular in the black community and as such I figured it would debut at #1. Saw part of one of them, wasn't my cup of tea at all.

Wow, Madea beat out Cursed...and Man of the House? Weird. But great for him (Tyler Perry)

And for those that don't know, as has been said it's a play, that's well, really famous, among most black people. And I'm sure the movie probaly isn't that great, and everyone who planned to go and see it thought so too, but probaly went to 'support' him.

The plays are actually funny as hell. (well yea, I'm black, so I'll say to me ;) ) don't know to much about the movie though, as that seems to be some kind of 'romance' rather then a comedy..which is what it's famous for.

I'm intrigued by The Jacket. The extended previews in theatres do it a lot more justice than the shortened ones on television. Plus, Keira Knightley looks amazing in it.

I'll be going to see Be Cool this weekend, and depending on reviews will wait a few weeks before seeing The Jacket. But I think people are underrating it, and I believe it'll be in the top five.

What Escalade said was what I figured was the reason for that movie's success.

Be Cool looks pretty damn good, and I'm also intrigued with The Jacket. I might even finally go see Hitch.

3 2 Constantine Warner Bros. $11,820,000 $50,751,000

That's like a 60% dropoff compared to last week, so that's terrible news for the movie. No chance in hell it makes its $100 million back.

No offense to Keanu, but he was completely wrong for the role. I think Constantine would've done much better had James Marsters been cast in the title role. Alienating the fans of the source material is NEVER a good idea.

Be Cool is going to BOMB.

Why do you say that? Granted, it's a possibility, but is there any particular reason you don't think the movie will do well?

Yeah, the Madea DVD's are sickingly popular so I expected the movie to make a killing in its first couple of weeks. I think it will have a gigantic fall off after about week 3, seeing as white people have no intrest in seeing it and there are only so many black people. But this movie is going to make a killing in the south.

I don't see how Be Cool could possibly bomb. It looks like it could appeal to many demographics

Andre 3000 and Cedric the Entertainer will draw the Black community

The Rock and Vaughn will draw the teenage/college crowd

Travolta and Uma will draw the white adult community

I'm surprised so many black people actually paid to see the movie instead of sneaking in.

Oh, and I saw one ad for that movie and went "huh?..."

Ah, wrong stereotype. Actually, young white people are the ones that sneek into movies all the time. So HA, hippie.

Other random fact...no one talks at the screen more than teenaged white kids. so you all can take that stereotype and shove that one too.

No, it's quite correct. Having spent 18 months working at a cinema as a percentage more black patrons tried this kind of crap than those of other races.

Except for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (that was the Hunter S. Thompson movie, right?) -- there were a lot of messed up white guys watching that film...

The fanbase would not have carried the movie to 100 million. James would have led the movie straight to bomb town.

Keanu hasn't done much better but at least it has a shot to clear over 60 million and possibly earn major money in the DVD market.

There are zero blonde haired british guys who could have carried this movie to 100 million. There probably isn't anyone in Hollywood, outside of Tom Cruise, that could have gotten to 100 million.

Also, white people talk during the movie on cell phones and to each other. If they talk TO the movie it's usually to object to something stupid. Black people YELL at the people onscreen and throw shit. I worked at the local AMC for a year, so I got to see this firsthand.

Do you know how many black people went to see Jet Li's movie Black Mask just because it had "black" in the title? It was ridiculous.

Regardless of their race, age, and gender, if people start talking during the movie, with or w/o cellphones or the such, just tell them to SHUT THE FUCK UP. Or call an usher and tell them to do it. It pisses me off to no end when people do that, it takes away from your enjoyement of the movie.

Or because black people love Jet Li? Seroiusly, Hip hop and kung fu go hand and hand buddy....shit, the whole Black Mask movie was full of Hip Hop...bad bad Hip hop.

And fuck you KKK, I worked at movie theaters also, and being that I let anyone that tried sneak in, seeing as I wasn't really getting paid enough for the effort, I still say white kids sneak in more than anyone on the planet, followed by young black kids. You were just a RAYCYST and were only watching the black kids sneak in you raycyst, um....black kid sneaking into the theater watcher~!

And also, maybe thats your town, but here, too many black people are sneaking in camcorders to make bootleggs of the movie to talk and throw stuff. As a matter of fact, they get even madder because you are fucking up their copy of the movie.
