Favorite Survivor Series match ever?

Recommended Posts

Another random topic since I'm bored...what is your favorite Survivor Series elimination match ever done and why?

I'm not completely sure on mine yet. But I know I love the opener from Survivor Series 1995, the match with Bret and Dibiase as the last two from 1990, and the Flair PPV debut in 1991 is a lot of fun too. How about you?

That Flair debut match was good on first viewing, but in watching it recently, it seemed disjointed and slow.

I've always enjoyed the big, 20 man tag matches from the late 80's. Insane stuff.

The Wild Card Match from Survivor Series 1995.

Owen Hart/Yokozuna/Dean Douglas/Razor Ramon vs. Sid/British Bulldog/Ahmed Johnson/Shawn Michaels

Great stuff.

I wonder why they never repeated the wild card gimmick?

Easy...

The 1995 roster was so thin, they had to mix match faces and heels to make an actual main event Survivor Series match while having the World Title defend... plus it was a train wreck. Yokozuna wrestled a good portion of the match for his team, Davey Boy wasn't "on" (and rarely was in 1995), Ahmed Johnson was as green as an infants poopy, and Sid is Sid.

My favorite... probably the 1987 match between the teams captained by Strike Force and the Hart Foundation. Cool to see the underdogs win.

I actually liked 2003's Team Bischoff (Jericho, Steiner, Christian, Henry, Orton) vs Team Austin (Dudleyz, Michaels, Booker, RVD) match.

I always enjoyed Bad News Brown walking out on his team too.

It's too bad they couldn't bring him back once per year specifically for this purpose. Plus, the announcers can forget that it happens every year by just saying, "That Bad News is a loner!"

umm mine would either be the

123 Kid, Jannetty, Razor and Savage against IRS, Bomb, Martel, and

Diesel... I never thought in a million years Jannetty and the Kid would be the survivors. I thought actually they'd be the first two out........... the pop the Kid and Jannetty got was INSANE..

Or the big 10 Team Tag Match from one of the earlier ones. I forget who was all in the match but the Conquistadors were the final team, and for awhile I actually thought they could win.. I love that match.

I remember that match from SurSer 94.

In fact Diesel was the first out from memory. Weird...

I've always enjoyed the Flair match from '91 that was already mentioned, especially how Flair wins by being knocked out on the floor while everyone else is brawling in the ring.

I also really enjoyed the "WCW/ECW" vs. WWE match from '01. I thought that match was really well booked and it was during the Heyman/Ross days of calling the shows so the commentary also got over the importance of the match rather than wondering aloud whether or not puppies would be banned in a new WECW era.

My favorite usually changes every so often after watching them, but for now I'll say from 1995: Marty Jannetty, Hakushi, Barry Horowitz, & Bob Holly vs. 1-2-3 Kid, Skip, Rad Radford, & Tom Pritchard. Just an awesome match from opening bell to the finish with not much resting in between. I love seeing Radford giving thumbs up to Skip & Sunny after doing push-ups, only for Horowitz to cradle him. Then, Jannetty has his sick powerbomb on Skip from the top rope. The one flaw I can think of right now is the finish with Sid interfering.

Other favorites...

Team Flair vs. Team Piper from 1991

Wild Card Match 1995

Team WWF vs. Alliance from 2001

Team Austin vs. Team Bischoff from 2003

I enjoy New Rockers/Owen/Bulldog vs. Godwinns/Furnas and Lafon from 1996 as well as the elimination matches from 1995 and the 91, 93, and 94 openers. Survivor Series always seem to click with me... even in 2003, Team Angle vs Team Lesnar. Not a classic but I enjoyed the booking. Benoit goes over strongly to boot.

Simple correction: It was 1993. Diesel was only in the midcard at the time, so jobbing to Randy Savage was probably an honor. Of course now looking back on it, that's kinda weird.

Agreed on the 1996 opener as well. Once the Godwinns are gone, it's awesome.

1997 Series Team Canda(The Hart Foundation's Bulldog and The Anvil, Furnas and Lafon) vs. Vader, Goldust, Mark Mero and athe debut of Steve Blackman as a pseudo-Team America...it told a good story as the U.S. team was made of heels and tweeners and turned on one another but Vader dominated...woulda been better with the Patriot as the lone face...the crowd was hot for the match too...good stuff and it hadn't been mentioned yet...

The hilarious irony of that match was that none of the Team Canada members were actually from Canada, as Jim Ross pointed out during the match.

1988: Team Demolition vs. Team Powers of Pain.

I love tag matches, and this was during the golden age of tag teams in the WWF; it seemed like just about everybody involved in the match worked well together, and the commentary was on point. Ventura/Monsoon is my personal favorite commentary team of all time, and this match is one of the reasons why; not as much witty banter as Heenan/Monsoon, but I always felt that they gave the matches they called a more "realistic" feel.

Favorite spot: Barbarian knocks a Conquistador (I think) into the corner, where he makes the tag to Tully Blanchard. Tully steps in, takes a look at Barbarian, then tiptoes across the ring to tag in Volkoff, and tiptoes back across the ring to return to the apron, all without making any contact!

Actually, I believe that Phil Lafon was from Canada.

When it comes down to it, this is also my favorite SS match. Nearly 45 minutes of non-stop action w/ a pretty funny double-turn to boot. The crowd seemed to think Fuji turned face.

My only minor gripe on the match is how PoP never attempted to break the count when they were out of the ring attending to Fuji. There the Conquistadors were jumping around in the ring like idiots counting along w/ the ref . . . who would start the count back at TWO whenever he'd get to six or seven for no reason whatsoever.

But the fact that The Conquistadors actually got some token jobber offense on The Barbarian after he reentered just about made up for it.

How about Radicalz vs Chyna/road Dogg/K-Kwik/Billy Gunn from 2000? I liked it only cuz The Radicalz whipped ass in that match and actually won.

But as for favs, yea I agree on the Team Flair vs Team Piper one from 91. Warriors vs Perfect Team from 90 for nostalgia reasons (first ppv match I ever saw, got me into wrestling) same show, Million Dollar Team vs Dream Team (Takers debut great stuff)

and I was just watching the Hulk Still Rules dvd and the 88 main event, Megapowers vs Megabucks, wasn't too bad. Good angle with Hogan getting handcuffed, and it continued the strain on Hogan/Savages friendship (hogan wasnt there for the tag, celebrated a bit too much with Liz after the match) Quick pace for a match featuring Hogan,Bossman,Akeem,Hercules

My Top 4, in no particular order:

Team Bischoff vs Team Austin, SS2003

Team WWF vs Team WCW/ECW, SS2001

Wild card match, SS1995

Jannetty, Hakushi, Horowitz, & Holly vs. Kid, Skip, Radford, & Pritchard, SS1995

EDIT: And I miss the days of the original Team names: the Visionaries, the Vipers, the Megabucks, etc. Now it's just Team [wrestler last name] vs Team [wrestler last name]. How unoriginal.

Hardys/E&C vs. Hollys/Too Cool was the only bright spot of SS 99. Not a 'great' match, but it's pretty fun and also, it's the last time I can remember Lawler being entertaining on commentary.

Also, the endings of the Team Austin/Team Bischoff and Team Alliance/Team WWF, if only for the crowd heat at the end of both matches. 2003 especially, it was refreshing to hear the crowd reacting so much to a face in peril fightback. Whenever people say 'no right minded male would support HBK', I think of this match.

The Hulkamaniacs 1989 (Hogan, Robets, & Demolition) Vs. The Million $ Team (Dibiase, Zeus, The Warlord and The Barbarian)

Team Luger Vs. Team Yokozuna

It's a classic case of cheering for the underdog. (pleads guilty to it as well)

Indeed. People don't always recognize just how damned good Shawn Michaels is at sucking a crowd into a match. He may be an iffy draw, but he can make a crowd eat out of his hands.
