Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 Yeesh. It might as well be Bowling for Soup or some such shit. Awful chorus, awful hook, awful in general. I remember when Maladroit came out, thinking there was no way these guys would ever make a good album again. If this song's any indication, I was right. So, anyone else here heard it? I got it via a link to this Boston radio station, but it's down now (so I can't provide it for you guys).
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted March 20, 2005 I hated those dorks from day one.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 Found a link on this hideous forum. Seems appropriate. And yeah, this is actually worse than anything on Maladroit, if memory serves me right. How about that fruity guitar "solo"?
Steviekick 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 They should have stuck with Rick Rubin to produce this album. This is pure crap. I still have no clue why they've decided to write such mediocre music since Pinkerton. At least Matt Sharpe had the sense to leave the band when he did.
Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 I don't think that Sharp saw a decline coming and split; I think his splitting was rather the reason for the decline. I think he was supposed to be a big part of the songwriting process. Even his Rentals stuff sounded like old-school Weezer. Should he ever return to the band, I think we'd see a major rejuvination in song quality. In summation, I don't think people should pin Weezer's currently average music solely on Rivers. It's unfair. The whole band influences the songwriting process. They had two different bassists for "Weezer (2001)" and "Maladroit", and the styles/vibes on those albums are night and day. On their DVD, they even said that the new-new bassist had a metal background and was a big influence on the "heavier" "Maladroit" sound. As far as the song: it's not totally God-awful. After all, Weezer was never more than power chords and sing-songiness. They seem to have radio single savvy, so I would need to hear the rest of the album before passing judgment. Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 Say what you will about the last two albums, but I think the few worthwhile songs from each one were released as singles, particularly those from the green album. That the first single from this new one is this bad isn't a good sign. Speaking of which, I used to defend the second s/t Weezer disc, but time hasn't been very kind to it. As for Maladroit, I haven't listened to it since it came out, nor do I have any urge to change that.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 I'll still defend the "Green Album," to a limited extent. All the singles are fair-to-good, and "Simple Pages" and "Don't Let Go" are nice too. Lacks the inspiration of their earlier work for sure, but they still had a knack for good hooks then.
Zetterberg is God 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 Weezer will always be one of my favorite bands, but it's clear that they've been on a decline for a while. I hope the single isn't as bad as Inc says it is (I'm waiting until the album comes out to listen to it) because that doesn't paint a good picture for the rest of the album. Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 I'll still defend the "Green Album," to a limited extent. All the singles are fair-to-good, Not true. Hash Pipe is the worst song they ever recorded. As a disclaimer, though, I have yet to hear the new single.
Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2005 EDIT: Whoops
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2005 "Hash Pipe" rocked. And Edwin was right about "Don't Let Go" and "Simple Pages."
Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2005 I also think the Green Album is underrated. "Don't Let Go" is my favorite from the whole affair, and also one of my favorite album openers. On "Maladroit", the only stand out, unfortunately, is "Death and Destruction" for being so off the beaten path (for them) and so emotive. I also like "Slob" for it's retro-alternative feel and "Burnt Jamb", despite the nagging sensation that I've definitely heard that riff before.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted March 21, 2005 The Green Album was what got me into Weezer. I haven't heard anything that came after that though, that was only during my very brief indie listening days.
Guest Just Looking Report post Posted March 23, 2005 I like it. The song reminds me of The Joker from the Steve Miller Band- the chord progression, the key, the weird guitar thingy, and especially the second verse where Rivers sings, "I wanna live a life like that"- it sounds like the lovey-dovey all the time part of The Joker. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted March 23, 2005 Wow this song does suck, though. It'll probably be like Hash Pipe where I'd have it hammered into my head and learn to like it... except I don't really listen to any radio stations that would play it anymore. Myxamatosis 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2005 The rejection and heavy criticism Pinkerton recieved from the start led Rivers into a self-imposed exile and when he returned, he wasn't the same perverted introvert we all came to love. But, that kind of material doesn't suit a guy his age. So, for those looking for another Blue Album or Pinkerton, don't hold your breath. Sad, really. Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 ^ I really think Rivers's subject matter is at its best when he's wistfully innocent, like the Blue Album. I'm not saying I don't like songs about lesbians or barely legal Japanese girls, they're great too, but I don't find them as identifiable as when he's just being a cheesy hopeless romantic. Unfortunately, this song is just fluffy, which isn't going to please anyone in the fanbase.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 I don't like being on a first name basis with any band other than the Beatles. eh maybe Radiohead just because "Phil" and "Ed" sound better than "Selway" and "O'Brien." But like, Pink Floyd, I never call him Roger, or Dave.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 I love how everyone at the forum w/ the link is in raptuous praise of the song while everyone here shits on it I was 14 or 15 when the Blue Album came out and it rocked back then, so I still have a soft spot for it, it's held up over the years. 10 years later they're still making music for teenagers, only it isn't nearly as good. This song is brutal, and Weezer done fell off.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 never liked Weezer
Sonic Reducer 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2005 Fucking worst song I've heard in a long time. And I'm a huge Weezer fan.
Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 I couldn't stand it, and I actually thought Maladroit was okay outside of a couple of songs. So yeah. Wow. Awful.
SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Fucking worst song I've heard in a long time. You can honestly say that in a world where Ashlee Simpson has a recording contract? My own take on the song is that its a bit too repetitious, but enjoyable.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 Does RobotJerk ever not oppose the majority on anything?
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 I'm guessing anyone who likes this song enjoys other things I hate with a similar passion.
PLAGIARISM! 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2005 I have no interest in ever hearing it. But those first two albums were largely awesome, and I too enjoyed the aforementioned green album tracks. Except Hash Pipe. 'Tired of Sex' is probably still one of my favourites.
Sonic Reducer 0 Report post Posted March 28, 2005 Worst shit they've ever released.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2005 I just caught the tail-end of the video for this. Weezer's playing at a party, guys! At least the last album had muppets.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2005 Does RobotJerk ever not oppose the majority on anything? Actually the majority of people will probably like this one. I can easily see this one being on MTV for the next few months. But yeah, the song is pretty fucking terrible. I don't really care for Weezer or have expectations of them, so I'm not disappointed. Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2005 Does RobotJerk ever not oppose the majority on anything? Actually the majority of people will probably like this one. I can easily see this one being on MTV for the next few months. Rolling Stone's already saying that it's the catchiest single Weezer's released in years (ignore the fact that this is coincidentally the first single Weezer's released in three years so this statement can't really be wrong). Madness.
