Matt Young Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 I figured I might as well finally make use of my broadband connection and download some music. I had been buying CDs at Best Buy (paying no more than $9.99 each) but now I'm broke again and I will have to make due with downloading CDs I want until I can afford legitimate copies of the good ones. At the same time, as a music lover and a songwriting musician, I wish to expose myself to new music (rather than schoolgirls) and expand my tastes. I'm also hoping that some new stuff will help me shake off this long running writer's block I've been experiencing. I know a lot of people here listen to bands I've never heard of, which is great, but feel free to recommend stuff by more "mainstream" artists as well if you feel that the music is good. Genre and time of release are unimportant. If you can provide the material for download or give a link, that'd be even better. Also, if anyone else wants to request recommendations from the board or make some, feel free to do so here.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Ok. Song titles: Ravi Shankar-"Monument of Strings" Journey-"Don't Stop Believing" Lividity-"Oozing Vaginal Discharge" Bloodrock-"DOA" Procul Harum-"Still There'll Be More" Cephalic Carnage-"Pseudo" Frank Zappa-"Advance Romance" Frank Zappa-"Camarillo Brillo"
Matt Young Posted April 11, 2005 Author Report Posted April 11, 2005 Thanks. I have a feeling that the Journey thing is a joke, but they're not half bad for what they are. I like Ravi Shankar and Frank Zappa from what I've heard. The others... no clue, which is what I wanted. New stuff. Also, for the metalheads and maybe some others- I love a good heavy song, but I can't stand constant growling and no melody. The songs have to have some sort of melody, and for metal, at least alternate between growling and actual singing. At least, that's how I feel based on everything I've heard up to this point.
Black Lushus Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Journey music is GREAT...their videos? not so much...
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Journey was not a joke. They're an excellent group, and their videos are just as awesome.
Matt Young Posted April 11, 2005 Author Report Posted April 11, 2005 My mom wanted to fuck Steve Perry back in the day.
The Czech Republic Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Journey started off pretty cool, actually. Aynsley Dunbar is a fantastic drummer. Do you listen to the Smiths, Matt? If you want to write teen angst music, ain't no better teacher than Morrissey.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 The epic balladry hits were far better than early Journey.
Matt Young Posted April 11, 2005 Author Report Posted April 11, 2005 I like what jazz I have heard (on digital music channels... don't know many artists) and you're a jazz musician, correct? Feel free to contribute. Also, I still have ChicagoLoop709 or whatever the numbers are on my AIM buddy list from a year ago.
The Czech Republic Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Buddy Rich and Miles Davis are my favorite jazz artists. I like a lot of Dave Brubeck as well. Maynard Ferguson is a fantastic player if you can look past the fact that he did some pretty cheesy stuff in the 70s. Don Ellis is pretty obscure, but he wrote this great song called "Strawberry Soup" that is like 17 minutes of just crazy orchestral jazz. I can send you that. Can't go wrong with Zappa's big three jazz albums: Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, and The Grand Wazoo.
Matt Young Posted April 11, 2005 Author Report Posted April 11, 2005 Fuck that. I saw Eddie Money in concert about 6 years ago. I got the ticket for free. I felt like I got ripped off. Well, that was until Starship and then Styx performed. They were good for some quality nostalgiac cheesiness. Oh yeah, thanks Czechers.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 The Dears - Where the World begins and ends Hank Williams Jr. - A Country Boy Can Survive Dr. Dre - Let Me Ride I don't know if this is what you want, but it's fairly eclectic I'd say, for better or worse.
Matt Young Posted April 11, 2005 Author Report Posted April 11, 2005 I've heard the latter two. Czech- Sorry, missed your Smiths mention earlier. I've heard some of that stuff, but not enough to form an opinion. And I don't really want to write teen angst music exactly, but that's what came out during my angsty teen years. Go figure.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Okay try this: Geto Boys - Damn it feels good to be a gangsta Jungle Brothers - I'm Gonna Do You
Red Baron Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Joy Division > The Smiths. Actually if you want a good bluesy/metal compilation I recommend you download Down's Nola. Its fantastic. Also Genesis, but do not go past the Album Seconds Out because their quality of albums suck. Foxtrot, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Selling England By The Pound is some of the best music released in the 70's.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Give me a base of stuff you listen to (besides Ashlee Simpson) and I'll make you some recommendations off of that.
Cartman Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Ra's new music Check out these two tracks posted on their little myspace site. These are both from their new album which will be released May 24th. Their 1st album was phenominal in my opinion, hope you like. I recommend all viewers of this thread to listen.
Nevermortal Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 "The Muffin Man" - Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart "Jap the Ripper" - B'z "I Believe" - Union of Blessid Souls "Cast Down the Heretic" - Nile "Cosmopolitan Bloodloss" - Glassjaw "Fantasmic" - Nightwish "Stockholm Syndrome" - Muse
Edwin MacPhisto Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Yo La Tengo's "Stockholm Syndrome" is a lot better than Muse's "Stockholm Syndrome."
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 was, not was - hello dad I'm in jail
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Actually, I don't know if hello is in the title of that one. Get the rap ones I told you about, Jungle brothers might not be readily available but Geto Boys most certainly are. Was, not was track is pretty funny. This one's not a bad ballad, Ivan Neville - Why Can't I Fall In Love Bauhaus - crowds; this one is sad but in a pissed off way. Just a guy and a piano, with the occasional guitar chord and drumbrush thing thrown aroudn in there, you should like it.
Nevermortal Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Yo La Tengo's "Stockholm Syndrome" is a lot better than Muse's "Stockholm Syndrome." I don't care.
Vyce Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Someone recommend me some techno and or electronica. I kind of like trance music, but I also like stuff that is more heavy and industrial like KMFDM.
Myxamatosis Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 The Go Team - "The Power is on" Oh man, that'll always start the day out right.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Someone recommend me some techno and or electronica. I kind of like trance music, but I also like stuff that is more heavy and industrial like KMFDM. Leather Strip
Nighthawk Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Leatherstrip is all one word. And sometimes they spell it Laetherstrip.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 NFL Films - The Pony Soldiers That's fucking it right there. Everybody d/l that one.
