This Week in Baseball

Phillies up 5-0, Yankees down 0-6. Looks like a good night so far. Of course, this is the team the Yanks scored 13 in an inning against, so I should quiet myself.

Yeah, but unlike that game, The Boss didn't just issue one of his trademark statements. I guess that needs to be part of the post-game ritual.

Marlins KILLING Hampton in the 3rd. First two batters were put down by fly balls to the warning track and one of those was Al Leiter, and now they've put up 5 runs all with 2 outs. Hampton isn't gonna make 5 innings.

HA he made it 5 innings. Not that it means anything since we're down 6-2, but HA.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

MOST BORINGEST GAME EVER

0-0 8th inning, no one has even reached 2nd base yet.

I guess it kinda figures, then, that the first run was scored on a ball that didn't even make it back to the mound.

Little victories, I guess.

And that was a nice little HR for Miguel.

The Reds tease us that they will complete the 4-0 comeback but it's bleak with 2 men on and 2 outs.

*taps fingers waiting for Aramis Ramirez to show signs of life*

.231 BA. Not exactly what you'd expect from the guy who's supposed to be the Cubs' big run-producer now. I also can't but help wonder what's up with all the walks allowed by Cubs pitching.

1-0. Those are the games that the good teams manage to win. That is certainly the best game I ever remember out of Towers. With Halladay going tomorrow we stand a good chance of the sweep and erasing that last terrible series against the Os.

Cubs back to under .500 and I'm quickly losing faith that this team is going to be anything but. The Cards already hold a five-game lead in the division and with the way the Cubs' health and performances have been so far, it might not even be close this year. If Ramirez comes around then what else is the excuse? No way his poor season so far has been the reason the Cubs have faltered. The rotation is a mess and as inconsistent as I can remember; the offense outside of Lee is rubbish and let's face it, Lee's BA will probably drop at least another 100 points before it's all said and done. Color me disappointed.

The White Sox pulled out another one run game, 5-4 over the Royals, despite Mike Sweeney hitting 2 home runs (including one that was a very low pitch, a ridiculously sweet home run by a very good player). Iguchi was on fire, hitting his first MLB HR and basically accounting for most of the Sox offense until Carl Everett hit a 2 run double to give the Sox their first lead at 5-4, where the game stayed.

Buehrle improved to 4-1 despite giving up 4 runs over 8 innings, all on home runs. Takatsu picked up his 7th, I believe, save of the season on a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Clearly this is all Steve Stone's fault.

A's down 5-0 in the 6th, a completely insurmountable lead for this offense. They are just getting worse and worse.

It would have been nice if the O's could have pulled out one of these close games. In order to be really good, they are definitely going to have to win the games where they get a real strong start but struggle on offense.

Tom Glavine is 2-17 (2-18 after tonight) against the Braves, Phillies, and Marlins since becoming a Met

What a piece of shit signing that was by the Mets. I knew it wasn't gonna work out. You could clearly see after that great 1st half of 2002 that Glavine is losing it quickly. This guy is such a liability on the mound it's not even funny. It's almost a guaranteed loss when he takes the hill.

Also, time for Piazza to hit the bench or be dropped to 8th in the lineup. He hasn't hit a lick and we're a month into the season.

Wade Miller with another pretty good rehab start tonight, going 5 2/3, 4 runs, 5 hits, 7 Ks and hitting 96 on the gun. I'm not expecting a miracle recovery, but this is welcome news for the Sox rotation.

Not for nothing, but 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings isn't quality. The 96 on the radar is impressive though. I think in the long run he'll help out boston alot.

Well that's what I meant. His velocity seems to be coming along, though he did walk 4 (making that 6 total in his two starts) so his control might not be there yet. He's pencilled in for Sunday against the Mariners, but I wouldn't be that surprised to see one more Pawtucket start.

Nick Johnson and Juan Rivera for Javier Vazquez.

Juan Rivera didn't have a spot, their outfield was full with Matsui, Bernie, and Sheffield. Nick Johnson wasn't getting that much playing time behind Giambi who is locked in FOREVER and whoever was DHing at that time.

Plus, Vazquez was traded for Randy Johnson.

I think the trade worked out fine.

The point is that it is another example of the Yankees dealing prospects in return for "ready now" players, trying to make a run at a World Championship. And now they are paying the price, because they could use Juan Rivera, they could use Nick Johnson, and hell, they could even use Randy Choate. Meanwhile, Vazquez's inability to pitch effectively cost the Yankees the ALCS, and now Randy Johnson is on the DL, and the Yankees are paying HIM for the next three years.

Fun note from the 2003 Baseball Prospectus, concerning Nick Johnson....

"But a good sophomore seaspm os a must if he wants to avoid growing up to be a Washington Expo."

Johnson went on to hit .284/.422/.472 for the Yankees that year, but was traded to Montreal anyway.
