Sid in WCW, mid 2000

So from Jan-March 2000 Sid is the featured attraction in WCW, being the champ more often than not before being forced to vacate it prior to Spring Stampede... I thought that this was his final appearance prior to December 2000 but then I read this from the pwtorch Nitro Flashback May 16th 2000- in between Slamboree and GAB...

 

Bischoff, Kimberly, and Cat came to the ring. Page interrupted them and beat up Cat and Bischoff until Kimberly hit him with a chairshot. Sid ran out and played to the crowd, but then turned on Page by chokeslamming him.

 

 

So he obviously returned for at least one night, anyway what I wanted to know was:-

 

What were the circumstances of his return on this night, was it more than a one night thing and how did it play out?

 

And how did they go about bringing him back in late 2000, how did he get the Starrcade main event slot against Steiner after not being seen for months?

Sid used to be a huge face in WCW and the WWF, so therefore he could still draw, and WCW was desperate. That's my attempt at WCW logic.

Flair brought him in for Starrcade to try and get the belt off Steiner, IIRC.

Yeah, no frills really. The night after Mayhem 2000, Steiner forced Stevie Ray into retirement by defeating him so Flair came out and simply brought out Sid as the #1 Contender for Starrcade 2000.

I loved how NONE of the top guys would tap to Steiner, they'd all 'pass out'.

I just remember that he was supposed to be a face in the Millionaires Club, but then he nonsensically turned heel to join the New Blood, then disappeared.

Sid appeared on the Thunder before Spring Stampede 2000, being "screwed" out of a spot in the U.S. Title Tournament in a handicap match against Harlem Heat. Guess he figures, if ya can't beat 'em...

Features WCW World Champion Scott Steiner's interview, where Stevie Ray comes to the ring, and a "Title Vs. Career" match is made later between the two. Booker T is announced as being in the hospital and injured. Lex Luger claims Bill Goldberg should be disqualified for accidently spearing the referee the previous evening (a loss which would end Goldberg's career). Mike Sanders, Sean O'Haire, & Mark Jindrak interrupt Dallas Page & Kevin Nash's interview, and eventually stole the WCW World Tag Team Titles after their impending match. Features Scott Steiner's Starrcade 2000 Mystery Opponent, Sid Vicious, coming to the ring as the show closed, Vicious return after 6 months.

 

1. Lash LeRoux & Chavo Guerrero, Jr. defeated Shane Helms & Shannon Moore at 4:13 when Chavo scored the pin with a suplex after Jamie Knoble & Evan Karagias distracted Helms & Moore with a ladder.

 

2. Yang (with Leia Meow) pinned Lance Storm (with Major Gunns) at 3:18 after The Cat interfered and hit Storm with a chair.

 

3. Alex Wright & Ron Harris (with Disqo and Don Harris) defeated Evan Karagias & Jamie Knoble at 2:53 when Wright pinned Knoble after Don Harris interfered and delivered the "H-Bomb" to Knoble with his brother.

 

4. WCW World Tag Team Champions Kevin Nash & Dallas Page fought Sean O'Haire & Mark Jindrak to a no-contest when Mike Sanders pulled the referee out of the ring and The Natural Born Thrillers interfered.

 

5. Bill Goldberg pinned Reno at 1:38 after the spear and The Jackhammer. Lex Luger attacked Goldberg with a chair after the match. Goldberg's new "streak" stands at 26-0.

 

6. WCW U.S. Champion Hugh Morrus (with his old "question mark"-laced gimmick tights) pinned Bam Bam Bigelow at 4:41 following the "No Laughing Matter" moonsault.

 

7. Rey Mysterio, Jr. defeated Jeff Jarrett by disqualification at 4:30 after Jarrett hit Mysterio in the head with a guitar as Rey jumped off the top rope.

 

8. WCW World Champion Scott Steiner defeated Stevie Ray with the "Steiner Recliner" at 6:55 in a "Title Vs. Career" match. Stevie Ray was forced to retire due to the loss.

I always loved Sid. There was a weird aura about him that made me always enjoy his performances. He wasnt the most graceful wrestler or a technical genius by any means, but I never had a problem with the guy, and always got excited over his matches. He had a pretty good powerbomb, and his chokeslam had good impact as well. Its a shame he suffered such a horrific injury.
