Interbrand Match on 7/11 Raw

Recommended Posts

I can't think of one **** Venis match.

And don't lecture me about time or opponents given, because arguments have to based off facts, and every time someone tells me Venis is great, they end up arguing that he "could" be great if given good time and opponents. But no one knows that for sure.

He was given time in OVW and produced a **** with Batista in October of 2002.

^And I would actually support the JBL/HHH feud. At least then they wouldnt have any other time for anyone else, leaving the rest of the SD roster free and Jericho away from HHH. Now all we need is RVD to Raw.

If Triple H goes to SmackDown, I'm going to shed tears of joy. Get him off my damn Monday night wrestling already.

Honestly, though, with the way they played up Triple H NEVER losing a HIAC match (didn't he lose in the Armaggedon 2000 six-man one?), it makes me think somehow Batista is going to steal a win in unconvincing fashion (can't let Triple H lose that precious heat). Then, on the final night of the draft, Batista gets shipped to Smackdown, not Triple H.

In a promotional message sent out to WWE Mailing List subscribers, WWE confirmed an interbrand main-event for the 7/11 WWE RAW telecast. The event, which takes place at New Jersey's Continental Airlines Arena, will see Batista and John Cena take on Triple H and John Bradshaw Layfield.

The unprecedented match should help move tickets for that particular edition of RAW, which is already emanating from a very hot wrestling market.

So I guess this means Triple H is going to retain in two weeks.

Damn.

Somehow I knew that HHH wasn't champion, but it's just hard to think of a world without him as champion, so I think that's what tripped him up too.

He's sure as hell better than JBL. When he's healthy, HHH is still one of the top 10 wrestlers in the WWE.

HHH is a good brawler. He can put on the occasional scientific match up against the right opponent (Benoit comes to mind immediately), but most of the time, his juiced up body is good for nothing more than punches, kicks, a sledgehammer shot and the Pedigree.

And I was a HUGE HHH fan a few years ago...and a closet mark today a bit, but I can't deny the truth.

Ya know, I'm finding it hard to think of a REAL **** Triple H match. LMS with Jericho? RR with Cactus Jack? That's about it, really, and they are arguable.

When you think about it; HHH after quad could still be the same HHH. It's just that when he had his 2000 push; it was right after the 5 minute matches of the Russo era so he probably looked pretty good to be doing the technical thing. Now a days we are pretty spoiled on workrate (workrate as far as WWE style allows that is).

But I just came up with this theory; I didn't watch any matches to try and actually see if I'm right.

It really doesn't.

Funny, I can't really think of any four star HHH matches, either. That's weird.

Also, think of all the time and road agent help HHH has been given and how many bad matches he's still had compared to how little Venis is given and how many bad matches he's given.

When thinking about **** HHH matches, do not neglect the Austin/HHH vs. Benoit/Jericho Tag Title Match. I'm really surprised that hasn't made it to any of these multi-disc DVD collections yet.

They used to say HIAC was the Undertaker's match until he put over Brock Lesnar. Perhaps there is some chance HHH will finally go Taker's way and put over the next new big thing for a huge rub.

You guys are all missing the point.

You say Venis is better than HHH but there's no proof because they haven't been given similar circumstances for matches. There may not be a **** HHH match, even though I think there are more than a few, but that doesn't make someone else who hasn't a **** match better.

Venis had a singles match better than any Triple H singles match last year. He also had a better tag match than H had. Just sayin'.

Venis does better with what he's been given than HHH has with what he has. Monday night Venis and Chris Masters went out and worked a four minute match on RAW with probably less than a day to plan anything out and had a good match which got the crowd interested in both men. HHh gets twenty minute PPV matches with whomever he wants with weeks of planning available and has boring matches. Thus, Venis is better.

You're talking about one match. I know, we don't see much of Val, but your argument contains only one piece of evidence. We can't assume what Val would do with 20 minutes against Chris Benoit or Chris Jericho; we only know what we see, and what we saw was a peppy four minute match. It should take more than one match to persuade you towards putting one wrestler over another, shouldn't it?

Plus, the way you phrased it, you're saying Venis does more in his three to five minute Raw matches than HHH does with his twenty minute PPV matches on a regular basis. Is this really what you meant, or are you just referring to the last Raw?

That's what I meant. Venis does do more in his few minutes on TV than HHH does with his 20 mintues on PPV. I only used the Masters match because it was recent, short, good, and involved a poor wrestler. If you want to see what Venis can do with time, check out his PPV matches with guys like Rikishi and D'Lo. He takes what he gets and does more with it.

Also, when watching any midcard match on WWE TV you have to remember that they're not allowed to go all out like main eventers are. According to WWE, the opening match isn't supposed to be a good as the main event. The bottom card guys aren't allowed to show up the top card guys.

Why do people ignore the Street Fight with HBK when they're talking about great matches? It was the best match of 2002, god damn it!

Also, the Raw match with HBK in December 2003 was undeniably at least a **** match.

And for as much as this board creams itself over Benoit's win at WM XX, it should probably get some consideration as a **** match as well.

None of those matches were four stars.

For the record, I consider the '02 street fight with Michaels to be HHH's best performance and his '00 match with Benoit to be his best match.

Not really. The street fight was hardly great. I can see the appeal, but it's not a great match, and there are far better matches in 02 (Benoit/Rey, Benoit/Angle, Rock/Jericho, the No Mercy tag, Lesnar/Taker). In fact, there's at least FOUR better matches on the same show!

The Raw match with Shawn was pretty good, but, again, hardly great.

I love the three-way, but I don't think it's ****.

I think LMS with Jericho is Trips' best match. That is MAYBE ****. Maybe.

I understand Venis isn't allowed to go all out. We can't assume how things would be if he was. More Kobashi rip-offs perhaps?

We may just have to agree to disagree here. I can't put Venis's top 5 matches over HHH's top 5 matches, so I have to think HHH is better. In fact, I can't even remember 5 great Venis matches.

What do you guys think of these? (sorry about the dates, I'm unsure of them) IMO they're some of the best I've seen out of him:

Venis vs D-Lo Brown (SummerSlam 99?)

Venis vs Mankind (was it No Mercy99 maybe?)

Venis vs Rikishi - IC Title Cage match (SummerSlam 2000?)

Venis vs Jericho - KOTR qualifier (2002?)

Still, I have to put HHH way over Venis match quality-wise. Hopefully HHH's upcoming 3-disc DVD set will incluse some good, previously-unreleased stuff from his 2000-2001 golden Era, like HHH/Austin vs Benoit/Jericho and HIAC vs Cactus Jack.

The best Venis match I've ever seen was against Steve Austin, on SD, I think it was fall of 99 right before Austin went on the shelf, but it's so long ago that I could be way off on the date. It was 15-20 minutes, old school give and take technical match with a little brawling thrown in, Venis got in a ton of offense, Austin let him look like a superstar, and the crowd was really hot down the stretch. I remember being bummed out when they didn't build any momentum off of it for Venis.

I've pretty much erased all 99 - 2002 tv from my mind, so matches like Venis/Austin escape me. I do recall, however, Venis having a good match with Rock around the time of the Austin match. I'm going to have to get a comp with all this stuff on.

Poch, the Venis/D-Lo match was Slam98, Venis/Kish was FullyLoaded00, you're right on Val/Mick, and I think you're thinking of Eddie/Val for the KOTR qualifier. Anyway, Val/D-Lo is a lot of fun, though sloppy, and it coud have done with a few more mins. I can't remember Val/Mankind at all. The KOTR was a lot of goodness, but way too short. The cage match was very well booked, but I loved the Kish/Val feud.

Val's matches with Orton last year are really good, smoking anything Trips has done with him, and as good as anything Orton's done, including the Benoit matches. The Val/Storm/Dudleys tag match last year was also really good, and it's on the WMXX DVD if anyone wants to check it out. He also dragged some good stuff out of Garrison Cade last year that needs to be seen.
