One and Only "ECW: One Night Stand" Thread

I sat and thought about it, and doesn't it seem to someone else that this concept could work well enough with WCW? It would also probably draw a bigger buyrate (although have a lousier crowd reaction, of course) than this show.

 

I think they could work the same magic at such a show, if they planned it right. No crappy booking. Get a number of guys who never worked for the company, that will be easier once TNA is dead. Get more guys that didn't make the buyout and let the cruisers do what they want to do. Include a HOF-style appearance and tribute to some old NWA legends.

 

An invasion angle like it was done tonight wouldn't be necessary, they did enough sportz entertainment style stuff during the first time they tried it. Instead, the card should mostly be some of the best WCW matchups that we either haven't seen in a while because of the brand extension or seem rather fresh (in other words, Eddy VS Rey is a no, but Booker VS Benoit would be a yes.)

 

In addition to this, they should use the WWE guys minimally to put together matches between guys who otherwise would have never met. Sting VS either Cena or Benjamin immediately jumps to mind. Try to keep it the WWE presence to the newer guys, because there's no need to have Shawn Michaels run in and go over more guys so close to his retirement.

I'd LOVE that, but I dont know if it would go over too well with the boys, alot of them dont want to relive those days AT ALL. It wuld pop a buy rate, but WcW being what it was, such a conglomeration, and the locker room strife alot of the guys felt--might not work. Id love it though.

It wouldn't work with WCW. WWF/E spent years burying WCW before Vince bought it, and they did a masterful job of burying it even after Vince bought it. Not to mention that all the WCW fans who might have tuned in to see a WWF/E version of WCW already did that when WCW was first purchased, and they got burned and tuned out, and I don't see them coming back.

That was when ECW was "owned" by Stephanie and Paul was just about kissing her feet, right? We'll have to see what this show's buyrate is to be sure on just how burned out everyone was by that angle.

 

Still, I guess the question is whether Vince thinks that his own personal vendetta with WCW is more important than money.

Goldberg main-evented in WWE for a full year and fought almost every WWE-only guy of his caliber, including Rock and HHH. Furthermore, these matches didn't draw, and he and management started getting angry at each other because of it. He doesn't want to work with WWE again. I think they may have to focus on everything but Goldberg because of attitudes and because he was a non-draw without 60 squash matches of buildup.

I seriously thought about this bit there is a reason ECW is ECW. ECW was unique by using the hardcore style of wrestling and distinguished itself from WCW and WWF. What did WCW do to be different than WWF other than Wargames? The WWE already uses the name the "Great American Bash" Would a WCW or AWA (I know, too old) work? Nope because WCW and WWF/E were almost identical.

WWE is a little too much like WCW as it is, in terms of tired rehashes, production errors, and dead crowds. Course, they don't know it.

 

But man, I can't get over this ECW show. You know it's a special show when the wrestling curmudgeons of the board like me are coming out to actively praise it.

 

Benoit-Guerrero felt so phoned in though. I never would've dreamt, especially in an ECW atmosphere, that Eddie Guerrero had to have a match dragged out of him. Is he okay?

Eddie Guerrero really looked like he didn't want to be there. I could feel the energy from Chris Benoit, but Guerrero didn't seem into it at all.

 

Paul Heyman promised a Japanese style match on Byte This, but this was WWE style all the way.

Even though I liked ONS, I obviously think that WWE should quit doing Benoit/Eddie matches for a while because their matches always end up being WWE-style spots anyway. The fact that they're much older now (with more injuries over time) than they were when they used to have much better matches in WCW and Japan is another factor, unfortunately.
