Ever get stuck bad in a video game when

Recommended Posts

Guest wildpegasus

It's happened to all of us before. We get stuck in a video game and no matter what we do we can't figure out a way to get out of our predicament.

But I don't want to talk about times where we got stuck for justifiable reasons but rather times we got stuck when something should've been SUPER obvious.

So what were your most frustrating moments in vidoe games where it looked like you were done for only for someone to help you out by nonchalantly saying, "Yeah, just go over to the left and that'll take you out .." Basically what I'm saying is what were your worst stucks ever when you shouldn't really have been stuck?

For me, I suppose the last difficult time I had was on the Zelda 64 game in the Fire Temple where I just had to make a simple, in plain sight jump to keep on going. I was stuck for days until I got help from my buddy.

When I was five or so, I couldn't beat the first level of Super Mario Brothers, but if somebody did it for me, I could beat the rest of the game.

Zelda 64 for me too. The first time I played through the Forest Temple I was completely stuck because I didn't get the bow and arrow dispite the fact that it was right there in the dungeon waiting for me.

Shining Force II. There's a particular city in which you have to use a Wooden Panel at a tree to open an underground passage. Thing is, I figured that I had to do something with the panel with the tree, but you had to use the panel at a very particular place or it wouldn't work. So I figured I was wrong and tried everything else possible to progress in the game, but nothing would work. I was stuck at that point for months and my characters got ridiculously, unnecessarily powerful.

Eventually, I ordered a strategy guide. Keep in mind that this was over ten years ago. I had to order it from Sega's website and it was nothing more than a stack of printer paper stapled together. When I read that I had to use the panel at the tree, I went back to the town and tried it from every possible position. Took me half an hour of trying, but I finally found the one damn spot where it works.

Despite all that, it's one of my favorite games ever.

I remember the worst case of this happening was playing Link to the Past on SNES, I was stuck for days. Since this was my favorite video game, I was stuck on trying to get the second triforce symbol, but what I was stuck on was that I couldn't cross this little river thing you had to go over to get to the second level on the east side of Hyrule. I was incredibly frustrated and ended up getting a strategy guide from Nintendo Power or something, and I STILL couldn't figure it out. It took me months before I finally saw a tiny little bridge that you could cross with ease, but as a result, I'd found almost all the secrets in the game up to that point because I kept backtracking to see if I missed something, so that was kinda cool.

In Zelda: LTTP, me and my two brothers couldn't figure out how to beat the Wizard the first time after getting the Master Sword. Yes, it's really easy just deflecting his blasts, but I suppose we missed that when we were likely trying to just dodge them. My uncle had to show us how it was done. We were all young, though.

Now, in Zelda 64, the Water Temple had me stuck for a few days on a few different things. Firstly, I was having way too much trouble with Dark Link, barely being able to actually land a hit on him. I remember the fight being next to impossible the first time, but when I replayed it a few months ago, it was surprisingly easy. Secondly, fixing all the water levels the proper way was confusing. I had the same problem playing it recently. Like many... I fear the Water Temple.

I couldn't beat Resident Evil 2 for 4 years because of those scary spiders. Yesterday, my friend's little brother got past the many spiders part, and I felt embarassed.

Link to the Past: When I first traveled to the Dark World--I had no idea what to do next. I just wandered around as a bunny, trying to figure out how the heck I'm supposed to proceed, since I didn't figure out how to go back right away.

The fourth level in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin.

I don't think I ever finished it. I couldn't beat it on my own, and I refuse to use a walkthrough, so...yeah.

Don't feel bad, they creeped the hell out of me too. I eventually got to where I could play that part myself, but used to have to get my little brother to do it.

Which level are you talking about? Tell me what part you're dying at, and I'll tell ya what you're doing wrong.

For me, it was Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. I was stuck at this one ridiculously hard jump late in the game that I simply could not make, no matter how many times I tried. I became convinced that I had a buggy copy of the game that was impossible to finish (but I was wrong, I eventually made it).

I don't know if I shoulda got stuck or not, but any mission involving flying in GTA: San Andreas, ESPECIALLY Flight School, aggrevated me to no end...actually I think the one mission that I damn near kicked in my TV over was the one where you have to fly underneath the radar and drop supplies off in some town, then fly back underneath the radar!

I still can't beat Super Mario Brothers for the NES. I get to like 8-2 then i die. I've got to the castle a few times, but by the time i get to bowser i'm small again, and he kills me.

This one single mission took me almost 1/2 as long as the rest of the game. Drove me fucking nuts.

I was just stuck for almost a week (partly becuse I gave up for a while) on KOTOR on the Rancor part. I ended up having to go to gamefaqs to get the answer. It would have been easy if I had just read the instructions (on how to give items, etc).

Another one I just thought of...

In Super Mario 3, there was that castle in the 8th world with a door every few steps. It might as well have been a maze. I was stuck on that level for a LONG time. Today, I have a pretty good idea of what to do.. I think it involves grabbing the P-block toward the end and going in the secret door furthest to the right?

Yep. The Fortress after you beat the tanks, and then those stupid levels where you won a leaf at the end.

Then there's a airship, then 8-1, 8-2 and the aforementioned fortress.

Harder than hell. Probably took me 5 years to beat. Not that I didn't do other stuff in that time....

I remember being STUCK in the Water Temple in Zelda 64 for days! I remember hating the level so much! I replayed the EDITED version of the Water Temple in the Master Quest bonus game. I still had trouble!

Right now, I am stuck, in GTA: San Andreas. I know I am nearly done with the game. I think I am 2 missions away. I am stuck on the mission, where you go attack the Ballas in their territory. MY GOD, it's FRIGGIN HARD! They come from all directions, and they kill me so quickly! Sweet even dies quickly! I don't wanna cheat, since I wanna beat this game with no cheats! ARGH!

Also, I remember when I was little, about 2 or 3 years old, I was THE MAN in Super Mario Bros! I owned that game! Now, in a "Red Sox" like curse, I have NOT BEEN able to beat SMB1 since I beat it when I was 3! I can get up to the last level, but I either NOT MAKE to Bowser, or somehow die on Bowser! ARGH!

The Water Temple in OOT, even after beating it three times before, was still a bitch during my Zelda marathon. I also remember getting stuck in Illusion of Gaea more times than I think was healthy. One of the few Snes games I've played that I never beat. In fact, I think I'm going to go remedy that right now.

The first pinwheel puzzle in Fatal Frame II left us feeling just short of retarded. Maggie solved the puzzle on the first try, and then she accidently skipped the message afterward, so we ran around the villiage for an hour trying to figure out what the hell that puzzle had unlocked. It turns out that we'd unlocked the door immediately next to the puzzle, except we hadn't known that there was a door there.

Which is why I really hate horror games like that. Stupid obscuring camera angles.

Tally on another mark for the water temple in OoT. Seriously I've never been so stuck in a game in my life.

You don't know stuck 'till you've played Alundra sans walkthrough. I doubt I'll ever do that again.

Some of the puzzles in the 7th guest were brutal, simply because the rules weren't explained.

I could never beat that stupid-ass driving mini game in Full Throttle. Once I played for an hour and a half. Good thing you can just skip it.

Not really getting stuck, but I didn't save Shadow my first two times through FFVI, until I consulted a walkthrough. That right there was MEAN.

And the worst of all: X-Men for the Genesis, an otherwise decent and quite difficult action game. I got to the end of the 5th (out of 6) level several times. At the end there's a computer in a room with no exits, and nothing left to do. You jump and hit the computer and it says something like: "you destroyed the computer! Reset the computer before it self-destructs!" and a 2 minute or so counter starts counting down. You jump around, there's no exits, there's nothing to hit.

You have to PRESS THE FUCKING RESET BUTTON ON THE GENESIS CONSOLE to get to the last stage. How EVIL is that? Seriously what kind of designer would think that up? Especially since every other reset button on a console I've seen (besides maybe the PS2, I dunno) is a hard reset. It's making me pissed thinking about it.

While no doubt evil, I lucked into the solution on X-men due to the power button not working very well on my cousin's Genesis, so we reseted after getting pissed after having the time run out twice. We both had a big laugh over it, after we swore to kill the developers of course.

Wow, I forgot about the X-Men reset. Easily the most evil idea for a game, ever. I've heard that it doesn't even work 100% of the time.

dude...come on...you did NOT beat SMB1 when you were 3...

My brother did.

I never could. Nor my dad, That jump in 8-2, with the skinny landing area...

I vivivdly remember my dad screaming "THAT DAMN SKINNY JUMP!" at him.

Can remember that. Don't know the names of the last two girls I've been with.

Go figure.

I did. I was being babysat by my cousin and I was playing it while she was in the kitchen doing something. I beat it and ran into the kitchen telling her but by the time she got to the tv the end had already happen so she told me she didn't believe me and to do it again....so I did and it shut her up for a bit. B-)
