Art Sandusky Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 I always think about this whenever we have a patriotic holiday of some kind. Most people are happy to have a day off or whatever, but I always wonder what people really feel about these days that have been set aside to celebrate anniversaries of events or memorialize someone. I'll post my own thoughts later after I watch the fireworks in Washington on PBS.
Murmuring Beast Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 I was in the States last year, in Boston, and I...didn't get it... We sat in the park all day so we could see fireworks and hear David Lee Roth sing.
Lord of The Curry Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 I could care less for obvious reasons.
the max Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 As someone who doesn't have the day off, I'm not really thrilled about it. But, I do enjoy the holiday pay plus time and a half when I work today and tomorrow.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 I did work today, as well. We were actually quite busy. I don't mind July 4th, other than all the flag shirts, they just bother me. Fly your flag from your window or whatever, and leave it at that. I hate too much of this patriotic symbolism, because it just gets stupid with American flag everything. You can even put a towel down on the beach with the flag design on it and no one bats an eye, despite the fact that the flag should never get torn or touch the ground. Those, I believe, are legimate reasons to burn a flag
Youth N Asia Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Pro: Time and a half at work Con: No mail I understand why people like the day, but it's just another day for me
Lord of The Curry Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 Are you that dependant on mail that one day out of the year without it falls into the "con" category?
Art Sandusky Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 If you put together all of the federal holidays, we don't get mail like, 20 days out of the year. I was gonna type a bunch of swelling patriotic stuff, but I decided to keep it to myself.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 The 4th traditional involves barbecues, and I rather like those, so I approve.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 When we yanks gave you Brits the middle finger and broke away from your hippie queen...
Nighthawk Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 What we're celebrating actually occured on July 3rd, by the way. The day's mood and standard archetypes are much the same as those of summer in general, back when you got off of school and summer meant something. I rarely care about what's actually being celebrated, and enjoy holidays based on mood, therfore the 4th is my favorite after Halloween.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 What we're celebrating actually occured on July 3rd, by the way.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> But it would have been the fourth over in England...

Kahran Ramsus Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I don't know why you don't celebrate your independence on May 22nd instead. Most people celebrate the end of a war, not the start of it. You weren't free until you finally drove the British out.

You weren't free until you finally drove the British out. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, but look who you're talking about here... Also, the start of the Revolutionary War was in April, not on July 4th. The Declaration of Independence was the symbolic birth of the nation on July 3rd/4th.
CanadianGuitarist Posted July 6, 2005 Report Posted July 6, 2005 I used to know a cunt who wouldn't date me but blatantly used me. Her bday was July 4th. That is all.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted July 6, 2005 Report Posted July 6, 2005 I worked like a damn dog on the fourth, and got totally gourded yesterday
