Wrestling Events That...

Recommended Posts

Guest J0bber

I have watched wrestling since 1995. After becoming a smark when I got the Internet in 2000, the unpredictable aspect of wrestling seemed to vanish and the more knowledge I gained of the business the easier it was to predict a storyline or a match's outcome.

With wrestling "dirt" sites constantly spoiling PPV match plans, upcoming cards and storylines, almost nothing comes as a suprise anymore, but there are a few events that were shocking to me because the Internet didn't spoil them. Two recent ones that cross my mind are:

1. Piper's Return at WM 19

2. JBL's Title Victory at GAB '04

What is everyone's perspective on Internet reports that reveal details to PPV matches?

I personally feel that they shouldn't reveal too much because the "anything can happen" factor of the Attitude era has almost been completely erased, and it takes some of the fun out of watching wrestling programs for me.

Secondly, can anyone else think of any other wrestling events that the dirt sheets never got word of or released information on?

I think it's fine to speculate. Nine times out of ten, it's pretty obvious what they're building anyway.

Surprises:

Piper at WM 19

Bischoff as Raw GM in 02

HBK's heel turn this week

No one saw those coming.

The thing with the higher power was that basiclly there was no one it could've been really, was there? I remember thinking "the idiots will just have it be Vince as there's no one else" and low and behold, even though it made no sense in the context of the past three months of storylines they did it.

And Bischoff said on Nitro that night that there was no point watching Raw as the Greater Powers initials were "VKM", and he had no inside info either but was just presuming it was for the reason above.

I was totally hoping it'd be Jake Roberts

I was surprised by DDP too, but I was at my cottage at the time and I didn't have a computer up there yet.

Bischoff was spoiled beforehand, but most people didn't believe it could be true.

Cena being the first draftpick was a big surprise, but in retrospect the signs were there.

If I remember right, they were going to reveal the Higher Power on the Raw right after Over The Edge 99, but they did the Owen show that night instead. Then they taped the Higher Power episode the next night. So the show had 6 days for info to leak.

THe night they panned over to Heyman as Lawler's commentary replacement. I think it may have been mentioned online prior to the show but I didn't see it and it shocked the hell out of me.

I'm pretty sure that the Higher Power show was live. The week after Raw is Owen was used to set up the unveiling for the following week.

For surprises that weren't spoiled by the net...HBK's return in 02 came out of left field, and I don't remember there being even a hint of speculation about him prior to the show.

That sounds right, there weren't any angles on Raw is Owen, per se.

As I recollect, OTE happened on May 2-4 Weekend in 1999; It wasn't until June that the Higher Power was revealed.

Wrong. OTE was on May 23, 1999 and Raw is Owen was the next evening.

I about shit a brick when Bischoff showed up on RAW to become the GM. If I remember correctly, Booker T was doing something backstage, he turned around and got this look on his face like he had just seem a ghost. He then asked something on the lines of "What the hell are you doing here?". Then the camera panned over to show Eric fucking Bischoff. It toook me a second or two to remember who it was because I hadn't seen him or a couple years, but that was quite shocking.

Right. That was 2-4 Weekend. 2-4 refers to, presumably, the case of beer used to celebrate Victoria Day Long Weekend, not the actual 24th of May.

OK, just one last time on the higher power thing, the Raw beforehand, Austin saw him under the hood and was shocked, which was what made it really obvious that it was Vince, so it couldn't have been the same week as the Owen Hart tribute show.

As far as events that didn't get spoiled by the internet, I'd say Angle pinning Brock clean at Vengeance. Sure, I thought he might beat Big Show, but pinning Brock was an awesome surprise.

As far as angles, the nWo running over The Rock was quite a shocker at the time, as was the ECW invasion.

Yes it was, it was taped on May 25, 1999 and aired on memorial day may 30, 99. also on that show Jeff Jarrett beat The Godfather for the IC title and The Acolytes beat Kane and Xpac for the tag belts. Vince Mcmahon also faced undertaker in a no dq match and lost. At the end of the show the ministry tied up austin and the HP came down and showed his face to austin. I remember one net writer wrote that the look on austins face made him think it had to be vince.

Though I still dont get why vince siad "its me austin, it was me all along austin" when he had already revealed himself to asutin the week prior. and how come steve didnt tell JR at least who the HP was? (in kayfabe terms I mean)

The Higher power reveal was a live Raw on June 6, 1999

Shawns heel turn on monday isnt a complete :surprise" to the net as even here on the forums we had been discussing the possiblity of Shawn turning on Hogan at Backlash. maybe that it happend on 4th of July is a surprise being the low holiday ratings and all.

Bischoffs return was not spoiled on the net to me at least. However as soon as Vince said he was choosing a new gm for Raw and Shane confronted him in the office saying how can you hire him, he tried to put you out of business or something like, I though to myself, maybe its bischoff.

BTW Booker was being interviwed in the back and was going for the can u dig that suckaaa line and got stopped midsentence and his eyes were aghast. after bischoff shook Books hand, Book said "tell me I didnt just see that"

Heyman was a shock to me, and that pretty much confirmed the death of ECW.

I was fortunate enough to be away from the internet enough to not have Flair showing up as co-owner, the entire ECW/WCW alliance forming episode, DDP unmasking himself as the stalker, and a few Rock return spots spoiled.

Me too on all counts.

I think the biggest one that occured in the last couple of years has to be the Eric Bischoff showing up on Raw.

Nobody thought that we would ever see that occur, espically seeing him and Vince hug after the announcement.

The best was when all the wrestlers were showen backstage around the monitor watching and talking Flair had this look on face like "I thought I was rid of this motherf*cker"
