Mik 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 Florida gets: Bronson Arroyo Kelly Shoppach Sean Burroughs Boston Gets: AJ Burnett Mike Lowell San Diego Gets: Abe Alvarez I don't know what the fuck to even think about this. At least Lowell's albatross of a salary is gone. It's not anywhere in print, but it's on the radio. Not yet confirmed but apparently just about done. EDIT: Now that I think about it... I believe it. Lowell sat out today and they showed him crying in the dugout at one point. At first I thought he was just being a pussy about his slump and kind of forgot about it. I guess I get it now. Just remembered that.
the max 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 I really don't like this trade. Arroyo is a good player, Shoppach is a good catcher, and Alvarez is a good pitcher.
Boon 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 I don't really understand why the Sox would get another 3B- but anything that rids me of Bronson Arroyo is a good deal. Now if they could do something about Mark Bellhorn...
Cartman 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 Arroyo is good, but Burnett is better. Shoppach is overrated and Tek/Belli is our set duo for 4 years. Alvarez is crap. Trust me we have MUCH better pitching prospects in Paplebon, Lester, and Sanchez alone. Trade isnt real though. No way in hell.
Boon 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 Yeah, losing Alvarez means nothing when you've got those prospects. I actually wouldn't be surprised to see at least Paplebon called up sometime this season, considering the travesty otherwise known as the bullpen.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 Alvarez is a very nice prospect. I had a chance to see him pitch live in Scranton earlier this season. His ERA is high but all of his ratios are good, including his hits allowed. At 22, he's a very underrated player right now.
Guest TheDon Report post Posted July 17, 2005 I heard a rumor that Florida would only trade AJ if the team took Mike Lowells big contract as well. Those were the conditions for getting AJ.

Styles 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 Gammons says this trade is false and Rosenthal says the Red Sox are not into it. It's between Chicago (white sox) and Baltimore. Both demand a window to sign an extension. AJ's wife is from Baltimore and rumors have him preferring the O's. Orioles would take Lowell, not sure about the White Sox. White Sox package is Contreras, Anderson and Marte. The O's package is Penn, Bigbie, Julio and Kline.

Styles 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 Providence Journal: As the July 31 trading deadline draws near, rumors are bound to spread. Two recent ones involving the Red Sox, however, were particularly unfounded. One had the Red Sox involved in a blockbuster deal with the San Diego Padres, with the Sox sending David Wells, Kevin Millar and Trot Nixon off for Sean Burroughs, Adam Eaton and Ryan Klesko. Just one problem: the two teams hadn't even talked. Meanwhile, published reports in New York and Baltimore had the Sox closing in on a trade for Florida Marlins pitcher A.J. Burnett , with one citing a major league source that said Burnett would join the Sox within the week. But while the Sox have a definite interest in Burnett, they're nowhere close to completing a trade for him. The Marlins are ready to move Burnett, who is eligible for free agency after the season. But they're looking for a starting pitcher, a reliever and a young lefthanded-hitting outfielder.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 Lowell could be packaged with Burnett in deal By Tom D'Angelo Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Monday, July 18, 2005 PHILADELPHIA — The Florida Marlins appear ready to trade pitcher A.J. Burnett, and possibly third baseman Mike Lowell, with the Orioles and Red Sox making serious bids, according to sources. Burnett could be traded before his next start, which is Tuesday. "It almost seems imminent something is going to happen,'' a source close to the situation said Sunday. Burnett and Lowell flew with the team to Arizona after the Marlins' 8-4 loss to the Phillies on Sunday. A multi-player deal with the Orioles would be the Marlins' preference if the Orioles agree to take Lowell. Boston has offered a package that includes right-hander Bronson Arroyo. But "that could change with a phone call,'' according to a source who said about four other teams are interested. The Marlins are attempting to package Lowell in any deal involving Burnett. Talk of a three-way trade with Boston and San Diego was reported Sunday with third baseman Sean Burroughs and Arroyo among the players headed to Florida. Burnett and Lowell would wind up in Boston. A report out of the Baltimore area said the Orioles could make the deal if they would accept Lowell as part of the package for starting pitcher Hayden Penn (recently returned to Class AA), relievers Steve Kline and Jorge Julio and outfielder Larry Bigbie. Burnett, who is 5-6 with a 3.64 ERA and will be a free agent at the end of the season, appears unfazed by the reports. "I don't think it is going to happen," he said Sunday. Lowell, hitting.227 and making $7.5 million, is not surprised his name has resurfaced in trade talks. "This is a business,'' Lowell said Sunday. "You look at my numbers and you look at my contract. "I'm a realist. I'm not putting up numbers to the contract that I'm making.'' Lowell has four home runs (three fewer than Damion Easley, who took Lowell's spot at third base Sunday) and 36 RBI. But the number that hangs around the Marlins' necks is $21.25 million, the amount Lowell is due through 2007. "I think you have a lot more leeway if you're a big market team and we're not that,'' Lowell said. "And Miguel Cabrera can play third. All the things that I see, it's not surprising to me. It doesn't bother me, it really doesn't.'' For Lowell, the rumors are nothing new. In 2003, his name was linked to proposed deals with the Cubs and Dodgers before the trading deadline, and he was the subject of several rumors while in the Yankees' system from 1995-99. The trade deadline is July 31 .. Where would Lowell play? Im all for anything that gets Julio and Kline outta Baltimore and doesn't involve Daniel Cabrerra, but I still dont get why the Os would want Lowell. He wouldn't be playing 3b and he wouldn't be able to DH unless Gibbons plays RF wihich would mean Sosa would have to sit...um..go for it. And getting Burnett would mean that they could get Sidney Fatso out of the Rotation as well, which would make every Os fan a lot happier.
Styles 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 It has already been confirmed in several local articles that Lowell would play 1st base allowing Palmeiro to mostly DH (Sosa moves back to RF, Gibbons to left). They also said he would play some time in LF. Also, since he's signed through next year, if you believe his slump this year is just an abberation along the lines of Pat Burrell or Paul Konerko from a couple years ago (and I do, he's still pretty young at 31 and has shown no signs of delcine the past 2 seasons), he would become our 1st baseman next year, bounce back and add more offense. MikeJordan23 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 What the hell do the White Sox need more pitching for? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I believe the GM said a couple weeks ago he wasn't happy with El Duque, and if he doesn't shape up, he'll be replaced. Or something close to that.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 It's funny, I've been wondering what Arroyo would do if the Sox traded him ... his album cover shot has him sittin in Fenway, he covers Dirty Water, and has teammates appear on the album with him. All of the above would be kind of stupid for a guy that plays somewhere other than here.
Mik 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 Well, now the Baltimore Sun is reporting that the reported trade between the Marlins and Orioles will be completed today. Man, trade rumors are ok, but everybody needs to stop reporting them as fact. Oh, and expect Jack Mckeon to be fired. The south Florida papers are already mentioning possible candidates: according to the Sentinel the leading candidate is Joe Girardi. I'd be thrilled if that happened, honestly. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 He could do a latin-based followup featuring Carlos Delgado, Miguel Cabrera, Alex Gonzalez, and Luis Castillo. I fear the album will envelop controversy when he and Todd Jones sing a song bashing homosexuals.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 Fans in Baltimore are all too familiar with the "the trade will be completed today" which must be the Sun's code word for "something will come up and it won't happen". If it does go through, I hope to God that they get rid of Ponson...because getting rid of any of the other pitchers in the rotation to make room for Burnett wouldn't make sense at all. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 While it has gone unreported, the Orioles get a huge boost today as Eric Bedard, their best starter this season, comes off the disabled list and starts tonight.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 While it has gone unreported, the Orioles get a huge boost today as Eric Bedard, their best starter this season, comes off the disabled list and starts tonight. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think you mean't HASNT gone unreported..because I said that last tuesday after I saw him pitch 5 innings in a rehab start (3 hits/0 ER/9ks). Some of the reasoning behind the trade having to be made tonight lies with the fact that they haven't made a roster move sending someone down. If the trade doesn't get made, it will probably be Chris Ray, although that stinks because he's been the best guy out of the bullpen lately..although someone mentioned Ponson might go on the DL (longshot/wishful thinking)..
Styles 0 Report post Posted July 18, 2005 Martin, if the trade is Julio, Kline and Bigbie off the roster (Penn is in the minors and wouldn't effect our 25), and Burnett and Lowell to the roster plus Bedard recalled we wouldn't have to send down anybody. Ray isn't going anywhere he is our righty setup man and probably closer of the future if (when) Ryan walks after this year. Anyway, I would like to do the happy dance but will restrain myself since if every time something like "The Orioles are the favorites and a deal should be completed soon" type deal was true we'd have Derek Lee, Vlad Guerrero, Ivan Rodriguez, Carlos Delgado and Tim Hudson on our team. He also noted that it appears that most of the players aren't really listening to McKeon anymore because he can be abrasive and hurt the player's feelings.
