Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted August 3, 2005 Darren McCarty will be a great fit in Calgary. I have to say that making Darryl Sutter coach and GM of the Flames was the smartest decision made in the past five years in the NHL. I was anti-Sutter when he coached the Sharks because he's boring and uncreative. The players he was given (Selanne, Jeff Friesen, Patrick Marleau) were bad fits for his system. Letting Sutter pick and choose who he wants in Calgary is the best way for him to make sure he gets the right guys for the Sutter system. Guys like McCarty and Chris Simon are going to flourish in that atmosphere. Watch out for the Flames! Other notes: - Corey Stillman left Tampa for Carolina. Talk about penthouse to outhouse. Tell me how playing for the Hurriwhalers is better than hanging with Lecavlier and St. Louis? Lame! - Gelinas left Calgary for Florida. Too bad for the Flames as he was huge last post-season. And with Keenan bringing in more fossils, can we expect Craig Mctavish, Stephane Matteau, Shane Corson and Mark Messier back for the Iron-Mike All-Star Tour 2005? - Alexei Zhitnik went to the Isles. I guess that cancels out Aucoin in a round about way. - Demitra went to the Kings. Could be scary if he plays with Ziggy Palffy. Some radio station here in Vancouver is reporting that Nazzy has resigned with the Canucks. Supposedly Kariya has signed with the Sharks. And Modano is going back to the Stars. Even Scatchard's a good signing, he scored 27 goals or so just a few years ago. If he can give the B's 15-20 goals this year I'll be pleased. McEachern's pretty much just a depth signing, I can't see him getting major minutes unless he gets some PK time. Murray's the big one, though, and I really can't believe that they brought him back. Both the Vancouver Province and radio station CKNW say Naslund has agreed to a three year deal worth $18-million. Naslund reportedly turned down two other similar offers from "high revenue" teams because he felt the Canucks' offer was more competitive. "We evaluated every element to this and in the end it all pointed to the market being what it is and Markus' desire to return to Vancouver," Gillis told the Province. "There's no doubt that competitiveness played a huge part in his decision and maybe the way it is now, you really do have to sacrifice a little to be on a winner. I mean, there's a reason why Martin Brodeur took less to stay playing in New Jersey. Obviously, money was not the overriding factor in Markus' final decision." Naslund had 35 goals and 49 assists in 78 games in the 2003-04 season for Vancouver. There was talk of Naslund and fellow Swede Peter Forsberg signing together to play for Colorado. I haven't seen anything about Joe, but if they can ink Raycroft, Gonchar, Samsonov and Bergeron, I don't care about Joe. I agree on 3 of the 4 ... I'd take Thornton over Samsonov, personally. Raycroft is our goalie of today AND tomorrow, so he's a must-have. Bergeron is amazing for his age and will only get better. Gonchar is the kind of offensive defenseman that'll come up huge in the new, offensive NHL. But Joe, I think, has more upside than Samsonov. Joe's a first liner, Sergei's a second. Plus, with the team seemingly getting faster and focusing more on the offensive end, which is where Sergei is most dangerous, I'd like to see him signed over Joe.
