Guest Jack Potts Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 The WWE product has been dreadful lately, and I've deliberately blown off most of it over the past month, but I was pleasantly surprised by Ken Kennedy last night. At first I thought he was another warmed-over Bob Holly. Then, when he picked up the microphone, I thought he was going to rehash Road Dogg's schtick. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised by his take on the cocky new guy persona. Snatching the microphone away and redoing the intros was inspired. He pulled it off well, and the bit at the end where he repeats his name, like a boxing announcer, was golden. He was fairly solid in the ring, and although his finisher would be difficult with larger, clumsier opponents, it really lit up the crowd. In his brief time onscreen, I found him much more entertaining than Carlito, another fairly new guy who got over based on his mic work. I hope "Mr. Kennedy" goes places, but he doesn't look that tall, so McMahon may not push him. I've been so disappointed by the WWE product recently, but Kennedy was an amusing bright spot.
Team Angle Pusher Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 YES a Kennedy thread. I heard Vince likes the guy and he looks like Hardcore Holly so he'll probably get a push. The guy was gold and he didn't look "solid" in the ring, he looked impressive to me. The finisher got the crowd even cheering for him. He seemed a goofy but serious guy who can really act. He can play a Heel or Face. I wonder what else he has up his sleave for us. Ken Kennedy for World Champ.
Repo Man jr Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 The guy really reminds me of Steve Austin a lot.
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I've been watching him work the Green bay indys for 4-5 years. he used to work at the Nuclear Plant near here. His old catch phrase was The end justifies the means" he came out to "Stupified" and "Superman" movie theme. He was the ACW NWA Hwy Champ when the WWE called him up, and he left without doing the job so the local promoter and him now have serious heat. www.nwawisconsin.com
cabbageboy Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Yeah I have seen Ken Kennedy/Anderson on OVW and he was hilarious with this same schtick (the ring announcing especially). I nominate Kennedy for the new Chief of Staff. But would a Bush caricature like JBL want a guy named Kennedy working for him?
Guest Arnold_OldSchool Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I read on one of the Newz sites that Vince is so high on KK that he gave him his middle name as a last name.
Guest Biggles Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 It looks like the 2nd rope Somoan roll
Team Angle Pusher Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 It'll be even more impressive when he does that finisher against someone like Hardcore Holly or BATISTA lol. I heard he can do the Swanton Bomb as well so that can be his second finisher. He's clearly a Heel but this is a type of guy that gets turned Face by the crowd eventually: Steve Austin, Batista, John Cena.
Downhome Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 and the bit at the end where he repeats his name, like a boxing announcer, was golden. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ...or like an old time wrestling announcer. I always liked when they'd do that. The guy is gold, he's going to be huge, and I couldn't be any happier about that. Nor bring on Burchill and let's get this really started. I could see this guy joining JBL also, I think they would work very well together, and could eventually lead to a split between the two, or possibly even a Beniot/Kennedy feud over the US title.
RavishingRickRudo Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 You guys are all fucking nuts.
dpac Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I am just happy there is a wrestler from Wisconsin for this cheesehead to cheer for, and he does not look or sound that bad.
The Tino Standard Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 The best part with the ring announcing bit was that he even stopped his post-match celebration to announce himself again. And he even did the old-school 'repeat the last name' bit again too. GOLD
Twisted Intestine Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 It was funny when I saw him to the announce bit on Velocity last week. It wasn't funny on SD this week. It will be less funny with every consecutive week he does it.
Silence Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 It was funny when I saw him to the announce bit on Velocity last week. It wasn't funny on SD this week. It will be less funny with every consecutive week he does it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Which is why WWE doesn't need to just give him opponents like Funaki all the time, or it could get stale. Aside from that, I find myself chuckling over Kennedy's ring announcing.
Guest stylz Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I heard he was one of Paul Heyman's pet projects in OVW, and he came up with the announcing gimmick. This weeks crowd seemed really dead in general...in Toronto he had an amazing reaction from the crowd. J
Slickster Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 The guy really reminds me of Steve Austin a lot. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> SCSA was the man who inspired Kennedy to become a wrestler, in fact.
Team Angle Pusher Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 He needs opponents like Benoit so he can make fun of him in his announcing bit. Also I found the whole "I weigh in today at..." bit pretty funny because I can see him make comments like "Today I weigh in...well I gained a little bit of weight..." stuff like that, should be fun.
RedJed Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I'm with the consensus that this guy has something to go with for a future. He's got great mic skills obviously, and a solid moveset for a WWE guy. Looking forward to seeing what they can do with him down the road. Not quite getting why he says "Kennedy" twice though - that will get annoying. Maybe thats the point though.
cabbageboy Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Saying the name twice is an old school announcer type deal. I'd imagine he'll reduce this gimmick with time and do regular promos. I'm not saying it needs to be like WCW under Russo where everyone was cutting prematch promos, but having him do it would be fun.
UZI Suicide Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I wasn't impressed at all. I mean the guy botched a fucking clothesline against Funaki. That's the easiest damned move in wrestling.
Guest FromBeyondTheGrave Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 Mr. Kennedy is awesome. I met him during my time in OVW, he's a really cool guy. He's just so goofy, he should get over pretty quick. His finisher in OVW, was the Swanton-Bomb, which he called the "Kenton-Bomb".
Team Angle Pusher Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 I wasn't impressed at all. I mean the guy botched a fucking clothesline against Funaki. That's the easiest damned move in wrestling. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> For fuck sake almost every wrestler screws up in there first match and we saw Rey Mysterio/Eddie at Summerslam and they botched some moves as well. It just happens and if you didn't say this I wouldn't even have noticed it. You only care that the clothesline didn't go really smooth but meanwhile the guy pulls out the most awesome finisher in the WWE today.
humongous2002 Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 I don't see anything special about Mr. Kennedy but he might make it as a top midcarder, nothing more, nothing less.
Vyce Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 You guys are all fucking nuts. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree and disagree. On the one hand, I think this guy might have some real potential, and the word I'm getting from those who've seen him in OVW is that he's pretty good, so I'm optimistic that he'll be an entertaining addition to the Smackdown roster. However, some people are just fucking nuts. "OMG, He's awesome! He's so charismatic!!!" Why? Cause he repeats his name a few times? Naw, doesn't cut it. It's cute, it'll help him get over, but that proves dick to me. I want to like the guy, but he's going to have to show me more before I start singing his praises.
cabbageboy Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 Hell, Kennedy was awesome on OVW tonight. In the screen time he had he made fun of Dean Hill's profane outburst last week, explained his name change, denied being aligned with Johnny Jeter, pimped Daniel Puder, then actually was plotting with Jeter, and then hit on Maria.

I had never heard of, or seen Kennedy before, and I was ready to write him off the minute he walked down the ramp. However, he proved he was different and interesting enough to make me want to tune in to Smackdown! next week. I think we all realize he can't CARRY a career on the ring intro gimmick, but we all see enough in him to hope and believe he can BUILD a career off it.
Jericholic82 Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 You people should watch veloctiy more often He did the same shtick for two consecutive shows (the first as ken anderson vs you guessed it...funaki. in fact the sd match this week was almost exactly like the velocity match right down to the finisher, except the 2nd week on velocity he did the move standing in the ring not on the ropes) in anyevent I liked the gimmick but it will get old in a few weeks. Hard to tell if the fans are actually booing him or if its canned heat so I have no clue on how hes getting over.
Fro Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Kennedy has a lot more going for him than the announce gimmick, so don't worry. he can cut a killer promo or be very funny. He'll do fine. Not a great wrestler but he's solid enough and has a flashy move or three he can bust out.
Guest XxMariaSantosxX Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Wait! Here you go. Get a life from that. Hey, come on. You're saying this thing is dreadful. You can make your own internet.
