It's the 10th anniversary of PSX

Recommended Posts

Well the PSX is now 10 years old in the US. I think gaming has got a whole lot better since it came out and most of my favorite games are from that era.

So let's celebrate.

PSX is a great system, no question, but the N64 was better. As far as other generations go, Dreamcast, NES, and SNES, along with various Game Boy incarnations, walloped it.

I wasn't even aware that the PS1 was released on this date until I read about it at CheapAssGamer. Most importantly, it is the 6th anniversary of the Dreamcast (9/9/99). I had the day off, and I played DC games most of the day til like 5 PM when I left home. Long live the Dreamcast!

DC was good for it's time but I don't think it has much longevity. Most of my favorite games are fighters and it's the nature of that genre for those games to be outdated because of all the ports and sequels. Soul Calibur, VF3, and the Capcom & SNK games are now either on other systems or have sequels. 3rd Strike was the last big reason for me to dust off the DC and that died when SFAC came out for PS2 & Xbox. Nostalgia and the novelty of playing the older versions is really the only reason to play it now. I played Double Impact the other day for like 30 minutes just to see the evolution of Yang and now it'll probably be another 6 months before I play it again.

PSX games haven't aged well. It's hard to believe FF VII's graphics were once amazing. Playing the older Tekken games is always fun too and not just for the graphics. Tekken 2 is so slow and sluggish, it's like playing MK Deception. I like how the juggles take like half your life.

Even with the bad graphics most of my favorite games are still great. I just beat FF VII and VIII again last week and I'd take the original RE and MGS over the remakes any day.

I spent most of the anniversary working...but I liked the 1up feature.

It was great to see the writeup on Jumping Flash! I remember playing the *demo* of that game constantly when I didn't have enough money to buy many of the launch titles.

That was the only launch title I owned besides Ridge Racer.

I never actually owned Toshinden except later on when it was cheap used. I bought it from The Book Store's rental department for like 10 bucks. Not the best purchase I ever made, but I didn't buy the system to play it.

Tomb Raider is nearly impossible to enjoy today. I had picked up the 2nd one to see how well the ex-GotY had held up. After about a half hour into the game, when you have most of the traps wired, you get to a rolling boulder sequence...which leads to a dropout floor area. I tried to pick up an artifact right near the dropout floor, and soon ended up falling to my death. Didn't even reach the first save point.

That's about the point where I said screw it and went back to my rented Warrior Within. I guess you were expected to have played it directly after Tomb Raider 1, which I did complete.

Anya's love for FFVII is shameless and runs deep, but I'm sure most of us have played it, and even enjoyed it for quite a bit, with it being gorgeous but familiar...then by the time you finished it, it seemed like a pretty, but hollow and less interesting retread of games we played before. At least I felt that way after beating it for the first time, and that was long before the FFVII backlash had really started to kick in.

How's the REmake? I can't possibly imagine the original game without the terrible writing and dialogue. It would be like watching a competent cast and crew trying to do a big budget remake of a b-movie.

I still have much love for Klonoa, Symphony of the Night, and tons more I'm still too tired to recall at this moment. The PS1 had perhaps the greatest number of sheer quality titles ever made to date. PS2 isn't bad either, but PS1's been around a lot longer.

However, both of them have tons of utter crap on them as well.

Dreamcast still has great stuff. As for fighters, the exclusives it still has aren't earth-shaking (Project Justice, Plasma Sword), but it's the only non-import system with Mark of the Wolves for now. Plus, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is much easier to find on DC than XB or PS2.

It's not a bad thing that DC games (or sequels to them) have spread to other systems--it's just something that takes away bragging rights. I'm glad to have a Saturn, which still has games you can't play on any other system...

Even though several of those games are still being held by Ebay collectors who want you pay out the rear for really old games of questionable quality.

The remake is amazing graphically. One of the best looking games this generation. It's one of those cases where graphics really matter and enhance the game since the mood and atmosphere is part of what makes RE good. It is so much creepier than the original.

But some of the added content I didn't care for. The new fast zombies don't really work with RE's sluggish tank controls and carrying around gas and lighters sucks since you're already low on equipment slots. The additions to the story are pretty bad too.

The "tank" controls can be used for the D-pad right?

RE2- 64 had analog stick support...but it was worthless because it still felt better using the pad.

I got PSX in November 1995, along with three games (Tekken, Toshinden, and WrestleMania: The Arcade Game). I liked the system, but I will never again buy a launch model console. The launch model PSX systems were piss poor. They overheated easily, causing games to skip or freeze.

Games I still enjoy:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Gran Turismo 2

Metal Gear Solid

Tekken 3

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Games I used to like, but haven't played in a long time/haven't held up very well:

Alien Trilogy

Bushido Blade

Crash Bandicoot

Mortal Kombat Trilogy

Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi

Tecmo's Deception

Tekken

Tenchu

WCW vs. The World

[PSX] best console ever

I disagree. I still think that the Super Nintendo is the best system ever made. Even better than the original NES which pretty much was my entire childhood.

SNES just had too many fabulous titles. Hell, games nowadays are still trying to pull off what Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy III did years ago.

what about the sega saturn lol Actually its the 9th anniversay of

the Sega Peanut-which is actually an abstract concept thought up by my friend and I in 9th grade Math class. We thought "what if instead of making the system have better graphics, we went in reverse and put in worse graphics then, say pong?" Ok it was porbbaly funny only to me and him.

I never owend a PSX, as I stupidly asked for A Genesis for 1995 xmas, not knowing about the PSX. and in 97 I decided on a N64 over PSX, mainly due to the game WCW vs nWo: World Tour, which looked far cooler than WCW Nitro for PSX. Plus it had NFL QBC 98 which in the commercials looked like the greatest graphics ever IMO at the time and of course Goldeneye 007

Then in 02 for xmas I got my PS2.

wow 10 years already

Happy Birthday Playstation

Never got into the whole PSX madness - or PS2 or anything like that. Long live the Saturn and Dreamcast - gems to this day.

Lots of people say SNES is the best, but only a small amount of titles for it really stand out as classics today. Most of the games that defined PS1 back in the day have also aged disgracefully (try playing Tomb Raider today, even worse, Toshinden) as well. However, the sheer number of A+ titles that have managed to hold up well give the PS1 the advantage.

And PS1 usually had something that met or exceeded the SNES counterparts.

Super Metroid? While not quite as good in MY opinion, many would say SotN topped it.

Chrono Trigger? Cross isn't as good, IMO, but it's okay. The sheer number of good RPGs on PS1 vs. the small number that made it Stateside for SNES make it sort of a moot point. Ditto for FFIII.

PS1 never had a Zelda game, though, but there were a handful of clones for it, probably the best being Alundra.

PS1 absolutely smokes SNES in the fighting game department, without a doubt.

It's really not a fair comparison, because most genres today are spurred forward by folks who, while very talented, are standing atop the shoulders of creative giants who came before them. Plus, with PS1's debut gaming exploded into the mainstream. There was more opportunity for companies. More risks could be taken. Not everything needed to be carefully marked to appear as mainstream as possible. Companies like Atlus could import quirky RPGs with knowledge that there was a large audience for their releases.

On a related note, a Gamestop I was at out of town today had not one, but two new-ish copies of Rhapsody for the PS1. 40 bucks a pop.

I didn't buy it, but have you begun to collect crappy RPGs, by any chance, Anya?

Today I purchased a used Jumping Flash! to help celebrate the belated anniversary. By the time I had gotten a PS1, the game was quite old and I picked up the sequel, and played the heck out of the JF! demo that had been included with my first PS1.

That explains it. They had Persona 2 as well.

So are there STILL PS1 games being made (professionally)? Or just occasional re-releases (like the Squeenix tagged GH versions of Xenogears and FF Anthology/Chronicles)?

And of all the rare RPGs that could be getting rereleases, why RHAPSODY?

For those not familiar with it, it's a...well...musical RPG. Bad story, bad balance, bad gameplay, and terrible music. X-Play ripped on it when they were covering games with the worst musical performances in video games.

I don't think they made new copies, they were just old copies laying around in a warehouse.

I can't stand how most Playstation games look, but I have FF VII for my PS2 and I'm thinking of checking out a few other things, mainly Parasite Eve(opinions appreciated). I'm still a Nintendo fan first and foremost. I have something of a grudge toward Sony for the slaughter of the N64 because it was a quality piece of hardware that smokes the PS1 in my opinion, although it makes me wonder what it would've been like if both were using one format

I was starting to wonder if someone, somewhere, found a warehouse full of Rhapsody's and sold them all to Gamestop. The Gamestop that I worked at, until today, got a box in the weekly shipment full of MINT copies, all labeled at $39.99. It's also a featured title on the PSone section of the company's website (or at least it was last I checked). I had no idea it was reissued.

For some reason the Gamestop I used to work at was also selling the Greatest Hits edition of DDR: Konamix for $29.99, and had a large stock of Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo. Were these also reissued?

Anyways happy birthday to the PSone and Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was so far ahead of it's time, and had some really innovative titles. IMO, if you wanted RPG's go with the PSone, but if you like ports of classic fighters, go with the Dreamcast. Its hard to believe that October 26th of next month will be the 5th birthday of the PS2. My, how the time flies by.

Actually, word is that they reprinted them along with Disgaea. "Now you can own Rhapsody! See the work of Nippon Ichi back when they totally sucked!"

"Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi"

It didn't hold up well when it was released, IMO. :P

WCW vs. the World is pretty painful to play now. Great start, and I remember playing the heck out of it way back when it first came out, though.

Jumpling Flash holds up very well. Still incredibly fun, if graphically simple.

The problem with trying to play old PS1 games isn't necessary the graphics themselves, or even the occasional annoyance of pop-up--but framerates. It's a minor adjustment to hop from GGX2 to SSF2T. However, when you're used to 60 fps #D, going back to 30 can be a bit hard to take. Anything less? Headache city.

The game falls under my "haven't played in a long time but remember liking" category. I don't remember how good the gameplay was, but I liked the premise. A 3D fighting game with Star Wars characters. How badly could they have screwed it up?

WCW vs. The World wasn't too bad. It holds up a lot better than most of the other PSX wrestling games I used to own. I actually bought WWF In Your House and WCW Nitro when they were released. They're much more painful to play.

The Playstation's initials are "PSX" because, as was stated, that Playstation X name, which was conceived as the CD add-on to the SNES (similiar to SegaCD), but when Sega's failed, the Nintendo Playstation X was dropped and people were cut from Nintendo.

They then went to Sony and developed a stand-alone. The initials were used, but they dropped the X, probably for fear of lawsuits or something from trademarked material (I would assume).
