This Week in Baseball

Quite frankly the Indians lucked out because The White Sox aren't going to be playing as hard against the Indians now they clinched the division and are assured a spot into the playoffs.

Indians basically have no excuse to not take the WC.

Well, since almost every other playoff spot is settled (save for the NL WC), I guess it wouldn't do much to create a seperate Red Sox/Yankees thread because it would probably kill any discussion in this thread. Still, let's behave ourselves this weekend (you know who you are).

Looks like a sweep by either team is the only way to avoid a one-game playoff of any fashion, unless the Indians can't beat the AAA White Sox this weekend.

Today was a good day for me, and a good day for Baseball. Sorry this post was so Barron-esque (Ie: Offering Nothing) but, My team stopped sucking for a minute and now it's time to celebrate

No, they don't...but after losing 2/3 to one of the worst teams in the league in the last week of the season, I don't think getting swept by the Sox is a reach.

I figure the White Sox will play better now that the pressure is off. They've got nothing to lose, and they've probably got some frustration built up they'd like to take out on Cleveland. Indians better nut up, because with the impending war between NY and Boston they're in the WC driver's seat.

Haha- I just had to go out and flyer hundreds of cars with the city of Boston's parking restrictions for this weekend-

"Don't park anywhere, ever!" Going to be an exciting weekend-

I'd love to see Chicago unleash their frustration all over Cleveland and play spoiler- somehow, I don't see it happening.

Where the hell were you when we needed another White Sox fan to defend them?!

Yeah, no kidding. Have you even posted in a baseball thread this season?

I just realised I was insulted in that post. That's not very nice.

This is going to be an interesting series: The Braves, who will be playing rookies and giving Dan Kolb lots of innings v. The Fish, who quit last week.

I don't think MLB had that in mind when they made that series.

Well, I know one Marlin who will be trying on Sunday - that being Dontrelle. A convincing victory will give him the Cy Young - but a loss could give it to Carpenter.

If the Sox take two out of three from the Yanks, but the Indians lose the series to the White Sox, does the same rule apply to the Indians/White Sox thing, where there is no playoff and because the Yanks win the season series, the Yankees win the dvision?

If the Red Sox win 2 of 3, they play NY in a one-game playoff for the Division. If that happens and the Indians lose the series [winning only 1 of 3 or less], the Red Sox will have the better record and therefore win the wild card. Chicago already clinched their division.

Edit: I think. I've heard different versions of the same story.

Huh?

The White Sox clinched the division because even if the Indians sweep, no other team can have 96 wins with the Sox and Yanks playing each other. So, because the White Sox have the season series, they win the division.

So I'm asking, if the Indians lose 2 out of three, and the Sox win 2 of 3, there is no playoff because the Yankees have the season series, and the Sox have a better record than the Indians.

right?

Tie-breaker scenario only works if the losing team gets the wildcard. If the Indians sweep, they will have the same record as the White Sox but will take the wildcard.

That's what I thought, but I've heard ESPN reporting that there will be a one-game playoff in NY if the division ends in a "tie" (despite NY having the division series).

That means that ESPN's pretty much assuming that if Boston and New York finish tied for the division, Cleveland will be at least tied for the wild card.

If the Yankees win one game this weekend, Boston wins 2 games and Cleveland wins 2 games there will be a 3 way tie. Yankees would play Boston on Monday for the AL east. The winner of the game moves onto the Playoffs the loser of the game plays Cleveland for the Wild Card on Tuesday.

I cant picture the White Sox playing hard this weekend. You know they are going to give everybody rest and set their pitching rotation for the playoffs. The White Sox have nothing to play of this weekend other than home field throughout the Playoffs.

Given our Murderer's Row lineup....Dontrelle should throw a no-hitter.

I wonder how much Cox is going to use Kolb this weekend since it's probably his swan song from Atlanta. I doubt he even makes the postseason rotation.

Well it comes down to resting your players and getting them ready for the playoffs. They already clinched.

The White Sox are sitting six regulars.

Did you have to get my hopes up Ozzie? Why did he have to lie about this? If your gonna rest your players, then just say you are. No, "I respect Torre and Francona" shit.

Carpenter's stats as of today:

21-5 Record

2.83 ERA

213 Strikeouts

51 Walks

1.06 WHIP (Walks & Hits Per Innings Pitched)

26-7 Team record in games he started, including a 16-0 stretch from June 14-September 13 (13-0 personal decisions for him with 3 No Decisions)

Willis' stats as of today:

22-10 Record

2.59 ERA

158 K

53 Walks

1.12 WHIP

22-11 Team record in games started

As a Cardinals fan...the numbers Carpenter put up are enough to nail down Cy for him this year...that and the Cardinals are in the playoffs.

In fact, it will be a travesty if Carpenter doesn't win the Cy and Pujols doesn't win the MVP.
