Guest MikeSC Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Styles was every inch as tiresome as Ross. And, like it or not, they won't hire a guy who might trash the company on their own program. That'd be dumb business. Am I thrilled about Goldberg? No. I'm ambivalent at best about it. But there aren't just waves of guys waiting for their big break right now. Not many sports announcers would do it as, well, pro wrestling is the kiss of death.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Could Quardos and Rogan get along? I am surprised by this, which should be obvious given my initial sentiments (which seems to be based on MMA misinformation, not exactly a new thing ). I hated Goldberg at first, but sometime around UFC 40 he got good and I became Pro-Rogan. The guy is very good at what he does. He is able to keep the flow, he is able to shill, he can defer to experts (which would be needed for him), he can bring excitement and emotion to a match (but I don't think his style would mesh well with the WWE) and his voice -while standard announcer fare- isn't annoying like so many of the alternatives. I don't thing Goldberg would work well with King, though. With Tazz?? That's another story.
Lei Tong 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Bah. If Goldberg has to refer to a cheat sheet to remember who Carlson Gracie is, the WWE is welcome to him.

UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 They could get Robert Englund dressed as Freddy Krueger, Jason Lee, and Lindsay Lohan to be the announcers...but as long as the storylines, wrestlers, in-ring product, music, PPVs, and emotional attachment all SUCK, who cares? Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 This would probrably never happen, but the dynamic of Jim Cornette as play by play and Paul Heyman as color commentator seems like it would click. If WWE is throwing around "insane" amounts of money, they might as well go with something that could be mildly entertaining. I could just imagine all the little snipes, insider snipes as well as flat out, that those two could come up with, yet since both men are so into pro wrestling they'd keep it somewhat professional. Cornette and Heyman. Make it happen, dammit.

UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Mike Goldberg? That guy fucking blows. Like someone said earler - how is a guy who has little to no concept of wrestling moves, storylines, wrestlers motivations, etc going to step right onto the WWE's #1 show and become the lead guy? They need to replace the entire team to be honest, Lawler has been stale for YEARS and the Coach just fucking sucks.

RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 There isn't a single person qualified for the Raw announce team. There are much less great announcers for wrestler as there are great wrestlers. It is a rarety to find the right combination for the job, and even if there are people who are able to find that combination, that doesn't necessarily mean they will gravitate towards professional wrestling, since there are better options available. Understand this and move from there and try to find the "least sucky".
claydude14 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 If this is a really big money contract like it's reported, how is morale for the other announcers going to be? Mainly, I'm talking about Cole and Tazz. I thought I read recently they were upset about Coach getting a new multi year high paying deal. Also, Goldberg/Tazz does sound better than Goldberg/King/Coach; maybe they'll send King and or Coach to Smackdown! in a trade. Or I could see JR/King as wwe.com only announcers with Goldberg/Tazz RAW and Cole/Coach Smackdown! to truely make it the B show.

Fro 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Joey Styles is allegedly reporting on 1wrestling in his audio update that: 1. Golberg will replace Ross on Raw 2. Lawler will be let go 3. Joey Styles will replace Mike Goldberg as lead UFC announcer.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Isnt it fun how RAW moves back to USA, has one week of grand nostalgia and warm fuzzy feelings, and then they try and blow the whole thing up by dumping JR and Lawler? This is gonna backfire and it will lead to JR/Lawler vs Goldberg/Coach (im guessing Coach) at Wrestlemania 22 for the RAW announce team job. Yeehaw.
Styles 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Joey Styles is allegedly reporting on 1wrestling in his audio update that: 1. Golberg will replace Ross on Raw 2. Lawler will be let go 3. Joey Styles will replace Mike Goldberg as lead UFC announcer. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> LOL, did he report it in the 3rd person like that? I wonder who his source is for the 3rd item? But, seriously, Styles calling MMA? Isn't he under WWE contract? Things are just getting weird now.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Count me in the camp that doesn't understand how they can take a guy without any knowledge of wrestling at all, and instantly on his first day on the job make him their main guy in the booth. In the history of WWE, this is one of the stupidest fucking ides ever. Here is some more information on the Styles deal: 10/07/2005 - Joey Styles recently thickened the plot regarding the situation with Jim Ross being removed from the RAW announce team on his website, 1Wrestling.com The following contains possible spoilers for this Monday’s RAW, so do not continue reading if you don’t want to be spoiled. It was previously reported that Vince McMahon will be ‘firing’ someone on RAW, which is believed to be none other than Jim Ross. Who is rumored to be J.R.’s replacement? Ultimate Fighting Championship announcer Mike Goldberg. Mike has yet to sign the contract, but he will likely do so over the weekend and could be on WWE TV as early as this Monday’s RAW. It’s also rumored that Jerry Lawler will be removed as well, making the new announce team Jonothan Coachman and Mike Goldberg. Lawler and Ross are likely going to be announcing for WWE’s online TV shows on their website. You can expect WWE to be pushing their WWE.com shows very hard, as they will be selling advertising during those shows themselves. Joey Styles also revealed in his 1Wrestling.com audio update that if Mike Goldberg accepts WWE’s offer, which he very likely will, that will leave a lead play by play announcing spot in UFC open for their Pay Per Views. Styles also revealed that his WWE contract does not prohibit him from calling mixed martial arts events, it only prohibits him from doing other pro wrestling events. This means that former voice of ECW Joey Styles might be the new voice of UFC. He has expressed serious interest in the position, and might just end up being the guy calling the action at the UFC 56 PPV. So, by WWE removing Jim Ross from the RAW announce team and replacing him with UFC announcer Mike Goldberg, they are inadvertently allowing Joey Styles, who is under WWE contract, to announce for the very product that Spike TV is using against WWE RAW on USA Network. Keep in mind that the so called Monday Night War is not as much of a UFC/WWE thing, as it is a Spike TV/WWE thing. Whether WWE will attempt some sort of legal action or if they will continue to state that mixed martial arts poses no threat to them is unknown. However, it is likely that there will be quite a few angry phone calls made from the WWE offices if everything goes down like it looks to be as of press time. Guest Army Eye Report post Posted October 7, 2005 I just wonder what the cause will be? Did Ross say something on the previous show towards vince? Or is this one of those "Vince McMahon goes nuts" deals? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Austin stunned Vince and his family. Since J.R. is Austin's buddy, he'll probably use that to get back at him. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Trouble with going that route.. Goldberg would be a heel with the fans
Guest Ransome Report post Posted October 7, 2005 I've never heard Mike Goldberg commentate, but as far as I'm concerned, a change from the JR/Lawler team is so long overdue that I'd give anyone new a chance rather than listen to the painfully bad commentary of Jerry Lawler ever again. I'm just surprised they seem to be implementing this change so suddenly. Does this now make Michael Cole their most senior commentator ? While I don't want to hear JR every week anymore, I hope they continue to utilise his commentary for the 'big match' atmosphere (Austin/Hogan say), instead of delegating those duties to Michael Cole. Guest Edgehead Report post Posted October 7, 2005 It had to happen eventually. OK techinically Gorilla Monsoon wasn't a great commentator but he was the voice of WWE for a long time. They finally felt it was time for a change and Gorilla got promoted to on-air WWE president. Hell it be great if JR was replaced by Mike Goldberg cos' Vince fired Bischoff and new Raw GM was JR! The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2005 Why not have J.R. "retire"? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, why not just do like, at the end of Raw, instead of ending with a cliffhanger like they usually do (I think), just have the last match end, have the lights at the stage turn off, and just show Ross saying that he's decided to call it quits after 20some years of announcing, it's been a pleasure, thanks for inviting me into your home each week, I wish Raw the best, so long, we'll see each other again on this long dusty trail of life. It doesn't have to be "YOU'RE FIIRED BLAARRRGH!!!" every damn time.
