Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2005 Odd question, but Bret has had alot of different color and design differences in his outfits... Which is your favorite? cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2005 I'm not sure of the time period here. When was Konnan in the WWF? Bret was using the Sharpshooter in 1991 or so, but I don't recall what Konnan was doing during that time period. Konnan's Max Moon stint was more like late 1992 wasn't it? UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2005 Konan did two appearences as Max Moon. Bret blatantly ripped off Sting by using the Sharpshooter. Sting = US Champ, Popular face At the same time, Bret's push to the #2 title began, popular face...why he chose to use the Scorpion Deathlock, I don't know. So between WCW spring/summer 1991 you had the two #1 contenders making babyface comebacks leading into the Sharpshooter/Scorpion Deathlock. I HATED that. Guest Pete34 Report post Posted November 19, 2005 I thought having no commentary on the Dibiase match worked really well. I have the match with commentary @ home, and I thought on the Bret DVD it came across better. I read in an Observer that the reason he chose the Action Zone match with Owen was because Bret had an injured sternum going into the match. So Owen worked around the injury , didn't injure Bret anymore than he was,and had a really good match with Bret with the handicap of the injury. This was to show how good of a worker Owen was. It was a very good DVD.

MARTYEWR 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2005 Got the set, watching the second disc now, and something you guys should know: It's funny the things that happen when you have a rushed production deadline. At the end of the Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect SummerSlam 91 match, they forgot to edit the graphic that says "New WWF Intercontinental Champion" like they normally would with these releases. Oops! Anyways, my recommendation, for those who want the DVD, is to get the set as soon as possible. This set will be off the shelves once the wrong people notice that botch. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This whole set was ridiculously rushed. For more of the same, check out the intro's to the 9/29/94 match with Owen. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I noticed that last night when I got around to watching the third disc. Damn! The real weird part there is that they had the foresight to censor out when Vince, on commentary, said "WWF champion", but didn't blur out the graphic. Odd shit. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I bought this yesterday...Ive watched the feature, most bonus promos, and 5 or 6 matches. This was the first time Ive seen One Night Only vs. Taker...really good stuff. For alot of the matches it was the first time Id seen them in years, in some cases since the actual events...vs. Bulldog, Diesel, Owen. After watching the 2 Owen matches I dug up the 'Steel Cage' dvd for that match as well. I dug how Bret would kinda roll his eyes slightly or pause every time he said 'wwe' instead of WWF. The effects of the stroke were noticeable with his quiet speech and some slurring every now and again...but he came off as a very thoughtful, intelligent interview. I would have liked a few more stories of individual matches, but oh well. It was also nice to see that all the bad remarks that were supposedly taped were cut out...leaving us with all well earned praise for Bret, and Bret's own compliments for even HBK and Flair. Guest lo0p Report post Posted November 20, 2005 just watched the summeslam 91 match against Mr Perfect for the first time in about 10 years. Did anyone else notice the finish? Kinda reminded me of the MOntreal screwjob, right when Bret put on the sharpshooter .. Hebner IMMEDIATELY called for the bell, it didnt even look like Perfect had given up yet. . . he was still shaking his head in pain.
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I always (well, always since I was made aware of it) assumed the rush submission was due to Perfect's crippling back injury.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I'm not sure why some say the KOTR 93 match with Perfect was better than the 91 SS match. I watched both back to back practically last night on the DVD and I think the SS 91 match is certainly better. The 93 match uses most of the same spots and has a bit too much sleeper rest stuff in the middle. Also, the 1991 match has a much better finish (the KOTR match has a lame small package reversal). I know Konnan did a few shots as Max Moon but Max Moon wasn't around until late 1992 or so. Bret had been doing the Sharpshooter for over a year by that point, so when was Konnan there in the Spring of 1991 or so?
UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Actually, I don't think its Perfect's injury that caused the quick tapout. I believe this would be the first time Bret had the hold applied on Hennig. It was a reversal sequence. For Hennig, I think it was just difficult to tell whether, VISUALLY, the hold looked fully applied. The crowd popped for the reversal, so Hennig just accidently assumed it was fully applied. After all, there was no TitanTron back then for Curt to stare at, as he was face down/sideways. Curt didn't do it on purpose...I think he just assumed the hold was on and looked properly secured. Coffin Surfer 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 While I agree with your take on the Hogan/HBK match from Summerslam about HBK's over bumping ans trying to show up Hogan, I disagree about the HiaC match. Outside of the bumps he took of the turnbuckles, there was nothing over-the-top in the match in terms of his selling of moves or spots. The match was exactly how it should have been. First off, I mostly agree with your viewpoint on Bad Blood. HBK and even Taker's treatment of each other's offense was just fine. But my problem with the match was HBK's timing during the first portion, which is most likely the biggest reason for the crowd being so dead at the start. The opening strikes me as a 10 second chase and a ten minute catch, which spoils and bores the viewer that wants to see HBK get his ass handed to him. Payback comes a little to easy for Taker. What seperates a Flair or a Race from an HBK is they had the ability to space out their early stooge bumps in a manner that didn't spoil the fans. While they were getting their ass kicked they would still find ways to slightly break up the momentum and get under the crowd's skin, leaving you always wanting more. Here, HBK's comeback is almost welcomed as a change of pace. It has an inappropriate babyface feel that isn't helped by the fact he kicks it off with all his high flying face spots. It's not until HBK uses the chair and busts out great heel spots like the step Piledriver that the match really comes to life. The ass kicking that occurs after the Superkick also works much better since HBK keeps things moving by constantly running for his life and trying various methods of escape. Sorry for taking things off topic for a post.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Very interesting comments about HIAC though. Even though deep down I realize it's probably the better match compared to the Mankind HIAC with UT for some reason the Mankind match does more for me in a visceral way. Obviously there are the big spots, but in the original there was always something vaguely boring about the extended UT beatdown on Shawn. I said it earlier in other Bret/Shawn threads that Shawn doesn't seem like he can believably win a lot of these matches. The guy gets his ass kicked so bad that when he wins at the end it simply isn't credible. I watched the Bret/Nash match on the DVD and was impressed with it more than I was on the first viewing. While Bret certainly gets his ass handed to him he does stem the tide at several points and gets in quite a bit of credible offense, working Diesel's knee, trapping him in the corner with the cable, etc. At no time did the match seem like a mismatch. The Diesel/Michaels Good Friends match is usually considered better, but to be honest there's no "there" there in the match. Most of it is Nash just beating the shit out of Shawn, beating him with the ref's belt, taking Vachon's leg off, powerbombing him through the table. From an uninitiated viewer's perspective Shawn looks like he has zero chance of winning, as in he has no business winning. Then he simply hits a weak looking superkick and it's over. I remember talking to a guy in HS who saw that PPV and he was like "The Diesel/Michaels match was such crap. Diesel beat the shit out of him for 15 minutes and then Shawn just superkicked him and pinned him." It's the equivalent of being down 2 TDs with 2:00 left and scoring, getting an onside kick, and scoring again..then going for 2 and winning. The Bret match was more like being down a TD, then getting a tie, getting down a TD again, another tie, and finally kicking a game winning FG. Which is more credible or likely to happen? Guest tony manero Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Pretty disappointing collection. Bret missed the boat on a lot of the matches. There were two much better matches against the British Bulldogs, but he chose one that ended in an abrupt draw...ok Why did he leave out his match against Dynamite Kid from 1985? Instead of the Rockers match, he should've chosen his ladder match from HBK from 1992/93. There were much better matches against the Killer Bees and the Rougeaus; however, he chose a match against the Killer Bees that also ended in a time limit draw...ok. The Hart Foundation's crowning moment against Demolition from SS '90 is left out. The best tag team match (arguably) that Bret has ever been involved in was left out -- I'm referring to Bret/Owen vs. Steiners from WrestleFest '94. In fact, if I'm not mistaken 6 of the 18 matches don't have a clean finish. Also, 6 of the matches are already on other DVD releases. He should've went with the Final Four match as opposed to the Taker match from One Night Only. There should've been a roundtable discussion between Vince, Bret, HBK and HHH discussing Montreal on the DVD. The Flair and Benoit DVDs are better than this one. It just could've been SOOO much more. Btw, there has been a lot of talk about time issues being a prime factor for why Bret couldn't include the Canadian Stampede match, his match with 123 Kid, or the famous Savage match. However, Flair's DVD -- also a 3 disc set -- is exactly 40 minutes longer (according to Silver Vision), so what gives?

Bret could've still had another two hours dedicated to his career before and after that. Since Bret will be mainly remembered for Montreal, it needed to be properly addressed, even if Bret wanted to (rightfully) cover the rest of his career. I think that if Bret stopped acting like a wounded dog, HHH and HBK would have no problem having a roundtable discussion with him. HBK has expressed on several occasions that he wouldn't mind being on OTR or other similar shows with Bret; it's Bret, however, that is reluctant. With that said, the idea is not as farfetched as you might think.
