Super Mario Brothers: The Movie: The Game

Recommended Posts

this miscasting of Scott Wolf as Jimmy Lee (or was he Billy Lee?) and all of the ridiculous shit with Alyssa Milano kills that movie...Mark Decascos was good enough, Robert Patrick was fine...I was pretty upset with it, though, considering the original Double Dragon arcade game is one of my all-time favorites...it should have been a dark, brutal martial art flick, instead we get a bright cheery kid's action flick.

Meanwhile, Super Mario Brothers was the one that had enough dark scenes to make any kid cry. Stabbing the cute dino to death? Man, that's harsh. Rocket boots? Dennis Hooper?!?! I get the feeling Bob Hoskins either needed the money or signed on to the project before he met the director.

Fun fact: SMB had FOUR directors, that's right FOUR people were working on the film. Which means it was passed from director to director in a desperate attempt to save it. Annabel Jankel, the mind behind Max Headroom TV show and a cyber punk for her time (which explains the mess the movie was) and her husband Rocky Morton are responsible for the intial damage. Add in Dean Semler (director of the FIRESTORM) and Roland Joffe' (Scarlet Letter) and you have the dream team that made this hell. The best part is THIS review for SMB: "Hilarious and Exciting - a cross between Indiana Jones, Blade Runner & Star Wars." I think we all got a shit cut.

As for a game based on the movie, yeah I'd be too tempted to want to kill everyone and everything. Except Bob Hoskins who at least tried but he still should have known better!

yeah, they should have really invoked the "shroom eating" undertones from the games a little bit more...

kids, eat shrooms, they'll make you bigger, stronger and grant you extra lives!

eat the stars (acid implied) and you'll be invincible!

I swear, I'm the only one on the planet that didn't think Final Fantasy was that bad!

I liked Final Fantasy. It made no sense, which fits perfectly into the video game series which makes even less sense when you get to the ending 90% of the time.

As for the mushrooms, did we ever SEE the Marios eat a mushroom? Looks to me like they just touch them in the game and BOOM, big ass mario.

eh I always figured they were to shrooms as Popeye was to spinach...

I always figured that the whole story was some guy from Northern Cali ate some bad shrooms and started thinking Dinos kidnapped his girlfriend.

Personally I'm surprised a Metroid movie has never been made. Outer space sci fi, weird aliens, a female hero. Seems like the kind of thing Hollywood would trip over itself to make, especially now with what CGI allows. Imagine how Mother Brain would look on the big screen.

Fairly certain one is in development.

Has there ever been a _good_ video game movie?

I thought the first Resident Evil was pretty entertaining, though very stupid.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was terrible. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children has a totally nothing plot, but the action scenes alone pretty much make it the best video game movie ever.

I hear some of the Street Fighter anime is pretty good, but I've never seen it.

I think we can all agree that Uwe Boll makes the worst movies period. I haven't seen Alone in the Dark, but House of the Dead was infuriatingly bad.

Oh, let's not forget the second Tomb Raider movie. It went like this: Parasailing, snowboarding, water skiing, skateboarding, xtreme yoyoing, pogoballing, underwater hopscotch, the end. Seriously, it was like a series of fucking Mountain Dew commercials.

Trapped in development hell, believed to be quietly cancelled.

Did a movie directed by a Hong Kong action director based on a Japanese video game based loosely on a classic American sci fi movie ever have a chance in hell?

Good video game movies:

Fatal Fury

The Motion Picture was pretty cheesy, and somewhat of a stretch to call "good." Sulia was lame, annoying, and looked like jailbait. Some decent fight scenes, but I thought the SFII animated movie was better.

The second one was kind of neat because how ballsy it was to portray Terry as little more than a total drunk. Too bad he basically wandered around and drank the entire film, hiding from Krauser.

I never saw the 3rd movie.

Not in the live action movie. There's like a one frame cameo that people believe is him in the SFII animated movie.

However, he is in the Street Fighter Alpha animated movie and I believe he's in Generations too (the sequel).

People believe that Akuma exists in a cameo because he DOES, no doubt about it. The dub (and perhaps the original script as well, sadly I have never seen the subbed version) even makes an offhand remark about detecting another power in India when looking for Ryu. It (maybe) also led to the several Akuma cameos in the SF:V series.

It is rather odd that they tried to put Akuma in the SF:TM:TG game as they just ended up making him look stupid.

Here's a question: did the US translators fuck up Vega/Balrog/M. Bison intentionally? It seems like something someone should have caught.

Yeah they did. They didn't want to get sued by M.Bison (Mike Tyson) so they changed it around.

I never noticed it myself, and I haven't seen any pictures of it so I'm not too sure of it.

I'll say.

I thought that was common knowledge at this point.

However, they mixed up the win quotes in the GBA Turbo Revival because of the name changes.

I seem to recall reading an entry on IMDB stating something odd about the whole Bison situation, but then again IMDB will post anything that sounds moderatley correct.

Looking around, perhaps I either read someone's non-Tyson explanation (it said that was just a rumour) elsewhere or it has since been removed from IMDB.

I'll agree with you on that, Milla Jovovich is nothing spectacular.

She's fine. I'd murder that every night and be satisfied.
