Triple Threat Matches that never were

Recommended Posts

I'm not the biggest fan of triple threats, but every now and then there are some awesome ones (WM XX, WM 2000, to name a few).

Of course triple threats didn't really become prominent until ten years ago. I can't help but think that had certain combinations gotten the chance to partake in triple threats in the late 80s/early 90s, they could have been awesome. I think it would be really interesting to see how classic wrestlers like Flair, Savage, Steamboat, Bret, Hennig, etc. would have incorporated their styles and solid psychology into a three way match. I think their matches would have been a lot different than most of today's that rely on a couple of high spots to take one guy out of the match while the other two go at it.

So what are some triple threat matches from the past that you would have liked to have seen?

Here are some on my list to get things started:

- Steamboat vs. Savage vs. Flair

The thought of this is what inspired the thread. I couldn't stop thinking about this match, with Savage as the tweener, and all the cool spots they could have done. For the finish, I'd have Savage pin Flair after dropping the flying elbow onto him while he has Steamboat in the Figure 4.

- Hogan vs. Savage vs. Flair

- Hogan vs. Warrior vs. Savage

Three big time names.

- Rockers vs. Hart Foundation vs. Brainbusters

Looks incredible on paper.

- Rockers vs. Hart Foundation vs. Demolition

- Rockers vs. Hart Foundation vs. Legion of Doom

Could have been good.

- Bret vs. Owen vs. Bulldog

- Bret vs. Perfect vs. Shawn

- Razor vs. Diesel vs. Shawn

Late 91...

Savage/Piper/Flair.

Play up that both Piper and Savage want a piece of Flair, but in the match can't agree on who gets the fall.

I like that idea a lot.

I should have broken the idea down into two sections:

1) Matches that could have actually happened based on storylines, like the one you suggested

2) Pure fantasy matches that never would have occured because they didn't write storylines with the intention of building towards a triple threat match.

A lot of the ones I originally suggested fall into category #2. For instance, there was no point when Bret, Owen, and Bulldog all didn't get along because Bulldog first sided with Bret during the Bret/Owen feud, before turning heel and teaming with Owen.

The Savage/Steamboat/Flair match never could have happened either. By the time Savage was reinstated to face Jake, Steamboat was gone.

So, if I had to come up with some matches that would fall into category #1:

- Piper vs. Bret vs. Mountie, early '92

This one is pretty self explanatory for those familiar with the IC Title situation during this time period.

- Hogan vs. Sid vs. Flair, post-Rumble '92

Could have been the match where Sid went full-blown heel

- 1-2-3 Kid vs. Razor Ramon vs. Ted DiBiase, spring '93

Razor was still a heel for awhile after Kid upset him, but DiBiase mocked him for the loss. This could have helped contribute to a Razor face turn.

Around the fall of 97, I thought an HBK-Taker-Bret 3-way would've made sense. All three had been feuding.

Agreed. I think they actually did that on a bunch of house shows/TV taping dark matches. Or maybe it was Bret-Shawn-Sid. Or maybe it was both. I can't remember.

Savage vs. Steamboat vs. Honky Tonk Man would have been interesting in mid 87 after Honky took the IC Title off Steamboat and Savage turned face.

WM2000 was a fatal four way elimination.

A better example of triple threat goodness would be Danielson/Low Ki/Daniels.

I think he might be referring to Angle/Benoit/Jericho at WM2000.

Indeed I was. I love that match.

How about this one from early 95: Bret vs. Diesel vs. Backlund. Probably would have sucked but the storyline was there.

There were also rumors of a Rock vs Austin vs Mankind main-event at WM XV.

If Montreal never happened, a Bret/Austin/Michaels triple threat would have been awesome.

In 1988, DiBiase could have unveiled a master plan to book Savage in a championship match against himself and Andre the Giant. Could have set up an Andre turn but that would be unlikely since he had just turned heel a little over a year prior. Only Lex Luger could get away w/ that many turns in that era.

These are triple threat matches that NEVER WERE.

Lesnar/Angle/Benoit headlining Survivor Series 2003 would have been wonderful. That was the plan for a short period of time.

I vaguely remember that plan. Did it ever end up happening on Smackdown? For some reason I'm able to picture Brock trapped in both the anklelock and crossface at the same time and having no choice but to tap out... but I honestly don't know if that's just my imagination or it really happened. Wow.
