UFC 59: Reality Check

Recommended Posts

The bar I was at was screaming bullshit when they announced Tito as the winner. The only ones cheering for Tito were the women.

I can't believe Arvloski let himself get beat by Sylvia. I don't like Sylvia at all.

Is Mir even the same fighter after his accident?

I was at party watching the fight, everyone was screaming bullshit. When they read off the one score that had Tito winning the 2nd round evertone about lost it. Tito did not win that fight.

I'm still pissed about the outcome of both main events! Dammit! Sylvia is not better than Arlvoski.

I'm glad Evan Tanner kicked some righteous ass though. Everyone in the bar was behind him.

Sylvia beating Arlovski doesn't really do anything for Sylvia, it just makes Arlovski look bad. Yes, everyone, this is another example of the dreaded Baroni Effect. The HW division is a joke. I feel sorry for Vera, he should go down to LHW.

Tito probably wouldn't have won if he hadn't gotten that last takedown but he didn't do anything with him. As a matter of fact Forrest actually started landing some decent shots from the guard! What were these judges watching?

Were they so blinded by Tito's star power that they couldn't see Forrest?

I watched it again last nite. Tito had a bunch of real hard hits during the stand up in round three. Forrest was hitting him some too, but Tito just shrugged them all off. I think Tito won the fight as he should have. 10-8 Tito rd 1, 10-9 Forrest rd 2, 10-9 Tito rd 3. 10-8 because Tito completely doiminated for 4:30, with Forrest hitting maybe two or three shots otherwise.

Did anyone else see Chuck shaking his head after that fight? He sure looked like he thought it was BS and he was also giving Tito the "Oh please you're full of shit" look too.

Tito better watch his ass because I think Chuck will knock it off again.

Really fun show. It's a weird sense of awe seeing a crowd that big. It was also strange hearing "This bout is sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission".

- Monson and PDP do barely enough for their fight not to suck. I'm not even sure if they'll put Monson in against Sylvia now or if they'd rather just go straight to AA/Sylvia. Either one of those guys (Monson or PDP) would lose rather badly against the former champ and the current one.

- Fuck yeah Evan fucking Tanner. Sweet finish with the head-drop and Tanner still keeping it locked on. Tanner vs Marquadt- do it!

- Tito vs Forrest was STRAIGHT FYAH. Forrest getting his ass stomped in during the first was elicting a ton of "Oh shits" from the people gathered at Casa de Curry. Forrest getting up from Tito's guard and being all "Fuck it, let's go to work" was beautiful. Forrests animal yell before the third was awesome. I think he'll benefit more from this loss then a win because it was a fairly close fight regardless and now he'll take on an underground cult-hero type of status.

- Bonnar on commentary. They need to bring in GSP for Hughes/Gracie.

- Bonnar on commentary saying he wants Forrest again. I'm not mad at that.

- Stupid Nick Diaz. Learn to finish pepople who aren't named Oishi or Lawler and then maybe you can come back. Sherk @ 155 frightens me.

- Poor Pitbull. Poor, poor Pitbull. Rubber match should be hot. I feel really bad for whomever Arlovski faces next.

- Goat vs Joachim Hansen would truly be the most powderiffic fight of this age. Everybody at my place let out a collective "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh" when we all saw the blood flow after the 'bow.

He's only 5'9" the reach from Sylvia would be absurd.

Exactly. Sylvia's reach IS his takedown defense. Sylvia being thick as hell helps too, that way he's not in Semmy Schilt territory; probably the best strikes out of anyone who's ever come out of the HW division, but his takedown defense was shit.

I didn't explain that very well, but I'm sure you get the picture.

Nein. Don't confuse Schilt's later successes in K-1 with his MMA striking abilities. Someone as relentless and reasonably big like Yvel could've given him hell at any point of his MMA career, though would would easily be KO'ed by the lanky fuck in his current K-1 campaign.

Well if you're judging that by their mma fight, Schilt wasn't allowed to punch to the head while Gilbert was.

Yes, they were allowed to punch to the head in that fight. You might be thinking of Pancrase, in which Schilt had many fights. I don't think you can base Schilt's standup on just his fight against Yvel. After all, that's the only fight that Schilt has ever lost the standup in. Yvel is one of those fighters that can be a bad matchup for guys like Schilt because of his aggression and wildness; see: Rampage vs. Cyril Abidi.

No, I said Schilt couldn't punch to the head. He wasn't wearing gloves. Gilbert was. I'll go edit my post.

Oh, ok, sorry, I was still a "mark" MMA-wise when I saw that match. Still, when you add that to the equation, it just adds credence to Schilt's standup performance in MMA.
